Casimir Energy for concentric $δ$-$δ'$ spheres

We study the vacuum interaction of a scalar field and two concentric spheres defined by a singular potential on their surfaces. The potential is a linear combination of the Dirac-$δ$ and its derivative. The presence of the delta prime term in the potential causes that it behaves differently when it is seen from the inside or from the outside of the sphere. We study different cases for positive and negative values of the delta prime coupling, keeping positive the coupling of the delta. As a consequence, we find regions in the space of couplings, where the energy is positive, negative or zero. Moreover, the sign of the $δ'$ couplings cause different behavior on the value of the Casimir energy for different values of the radii. This potential gives rise to general boundary conditions with limiting cases defining Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions what allows us to simulate purely electric o purely magnetic spheres.

Some recent results on contact or point supported potentials

We introduced some contact potentials that can be written as a linear combination of the Dirac delta and its first derivative, the $δ$-$δ'$ interaction. After a simple general presentation in one dimension, we briefly discuss a one dimensional periodic potential with a $δ$-$δ'$ interaction at each node. The dependence of energy bands with the parameters (coefficients of the deltas) can be computed numerically. We also study the $δ$-$δ'$ interaction supported on spheres of arbitrary dimension. The spherical symmetry of this model allows us to obtain rigorous conclusions concerning the number of bound states in terms of the parameters and the dimension. Finally, a $δ$-$δ'$ interaction is used to approximate a potential of wide use in nuclear physics, and estimate the total number of bound states as well as the behaviour of some resonance poles with the lowest energy.

Quantum vacuum energies and Casimir forces between partially transparent $δ$-function plates

In this paper the quantum vacuum energies induced by massive fluctuations of one real scalar field on a configuration of two partially transparent plates are analysed. The physical properties of the infinitely thin plates are characterized by two Dirac-$δ$ potentials. We find that an attractive/repulsive Casimir force arises between the plates when the weights of the $δ$'s have equal/different sign. If some of the plates absorbs fluctuations below some threshold of energy (the corresponding weight is negative) there is the need to set a minimum mass to the scalar field fluctuations to preserve unitarity in the corresponding quantum field theory. Two repulsive $δ$-interactions are compatible with massless fluctuations. The effect of Dirichlet boundary conditions at the endpoints of the interval $(-a,a)$ on a massless scalar quantum field theory defined on this interval is tantamount letting the weights of the repulsive $δ$-interactions to $+\infty$.
