Algebras of distributions suitable for phase-space quantum mechanics. I

The twisted product of functions on $R^{2N}$ is extended to a $*$-algebra of tempered distributions which contains the rapidly decreasing smooth functions, the distributions of compact support, and all polynomials, and moreover is invariant under the Fourier transformation. The regularity properties of the twisted product are investigated. A matrix presentation of the twisted product is given, with respect to an appropriate orthonormal basis, which is used to construct a family of Banach algebras under this product.

Algebras of distributions suitable for phase-space quantum mechanics. II. Topologies on the Moyal algebra

The topology of the Moyal $*$-algebra may be defined in three ways: the algebra may be regarded as an operator algebra over the space of smooth declining functions either on the configuration space or on the phase space itself; or one may construct the $*$-algebra via a filtration of Hilbert spaces (or other Banach spaces) of distributions. We prove the equivalence of the three topologies thereby obtained. As a consequence, by filtrating the space of tempered distributions by Banach subspaces, we give new sufficient conditions for a phase-space function to correspond to a trace-class operator via the Weyl correspondence rule.

Why doubly excited determinants govern configuration interaction calculations of electron correlations

Computational evidence shows that, when using natural orbitals to study (dynamical and non-dynamical) electron correlation, determinants with an odd number of excitations play a negligible role. Instead, doubly excited determinants rule the rostrum in this kind of configuration interaction calculations. We explain mathematically why it must be so.

Quasi-pinning and entanglement in the lithium isoelectronic series

The Pauli exclusion principle gives an upper bound of 1 on the natural occupation numbers. Recently there has been an intriguing amount of theoretical evidence that there is a plethora of additional generalized Pauli restrictions or (in)equalities, of kinematic nature, satisfied by these numbers. Here for the first time a numerical analysis of the nature of such constraints is effected in real atoms. The inequalities are nearly saturated, or quasi-pinned. For rank-six and rank-seven approximations for lithium, the deviation from saturation is smaller than the lowest occupancy number. For a rank-eight approximation we find well-defined families of saturation conditions.

The lowest excited configuration of harmonium

The harmonium model has long been regarded as an exactly solvable laboratory bench for quantum chemistry [Heisenberg, 1926]. For studying correlation energy, only the ground state of the system has received consideration heretofore. This is a spin singlet state. In this work we exhaustively study the lowest excited (spin triplet) harmonium state, with the main purpose of revisiting the relation between entanglement measures and correlation energy for this quite different species. The task is made easier by working with Wigner quasiprobabilities on phase space.

Connes' Tangent Groupoid and Strict Quantization

We address one of the open problems in quantization theory recently listed by Rieffel. By developping in detail Connes' tangent groupoid principle and using previous work by Landsman, we show how to construct a strict, flabby quantization, which is moreover an asymptotic morphism and satisfies the reality and traciality constraints, on any oriented Riemannian manifold. That construction generalizes the standard Moyal rule. The paper can be considered as an introduction to quantization theory from Connes' point of view.
