Single-qubit universal classifier implemented on an ion-trap quantum device

Quantum computers can provide solutions to classically intractable problems under specific and adequate conditions. However, current devices have only limited computational resources, and an effort is made to develop useful quantum algorithms under these circumstances. This work experimentally demonstrates that a single-qubit device can host a universal classifier. The quantum processor used in this work is based on ion traps, providing highly accurate control on small systems. The algorithm chosen is the re-uploading scheme, which can address general learning tasks. Ion traps suit the needs of accurate control required by re-uploading. In the experiment here presented, a set of non-trivial classification tasks are successfully carried. The training procedure is performed in two steps combining simulation and experiment. Final results are benchmarked against exact simulations of the same method and also classical algorithms, showing a competitive performance of the ion-trap quantum classifier. This work constitutes the first experimental implementation of a classification algorithm based on the re-uploading scheme.

Experimental test of Mermin inequalities on a 5-qubit quantum computer

Violation of Mermin inequalities is tested on the 5-qubit IBM quantum computer. For 3, 4 and 5 parties, quantum states that violate the corresponding Mermin inequalities are constructed using quantum circuits on superconducting qubits. Measurements on different basis are included as additional final gates in the circuits. The experimental results obtained using the quantum computer show violation of all Mermin inequalitites, with a clear degradation of the results in the 5 qubit case. Though this quantum computer is not competitive to test Mermin inequalities as compared to other techniques when applied to few qubits, it does offer the opportunity to explore multipartite entanglement for four and five qubits beyond the reach of other alternative technologies.

There is entanglement in the primes

Large series of prime numbers can be superposed on a single quantum register and then analyzed in full parallelism. The construction of this Prime state is efficient, as it hinges on the use of a quantum version of any efficient primality test. We show that the Prime state turns out to be very entangled as shown by the scaling properties of purity, Renyi entropy and von Neumann entropy. An analytical approximation to these measures of entanglement can be obtained from the detailed analysis of the entanglement spectrum of the Prime state, which in turn produces new insights in the Hardy-Littlewood conjecture for the pairwise distribution of primes. The extension of these ideas to a Twin Prime state shows that this new state is even more entangled than the Prime state, obeying majorization relations. We further discuss the construction of quantum states that encompass relevant series of numbers and opens the possibility of applying quantum computation to Arithmetics in novel ways.

Tensor networks for frustrated systems: emergence of order from simplex entanglement

We consider a frustrated anti-ferromagnetic triangular lattice Hamiltonian and show that the properties of the manifold of its degenerated ground state are represented by a novel type of tensor networks. These tensor networks are not based on ancillary maximally entangled pairs, but rather on triangular W-like simplices. Anti-ferromagnetic triangular frustration is then related to ancillary W-states in contrast to ferromagnetic order which emerges from the contraction of GHZ-like triangular simplices. We further discuss the outwards entangling power of various simplices. This analysis suggests the emergence of distinct macroscopic types of order from the classification of entanglement residing on the simplices that define a tensor network.
