On the stability of homogeneous Einstein manifolds II

For any $G$-invariant metric on a compact homogeneous space $M=G/K$, we give a formula for the Lichnerowicz Laplacian restricted to the space of all $G$-invariant symmetric $2$-tensors in terms of the structural constants of $G/K$. As an application, we compute the $G$-invariant spectrum of the Lichnerowicz Laplacian for all the Einstein metrics on most generalized Wallach spaces and any flag manifold with $b_2(M)=1$. This allows to deduce the $G$-stability and critical point types of each of such Einstein metrics as a critical point of the scalar curvature functional.

The stability of standard homogeneous Einstein manifolds

Back in 1985, Wang and Ziller obtained a complete classification of all homogeneous spaces of compact simple Lie groups on which the standard or Killing metric is Einstein. The list consists, beyond isotropy irreducible spaces, of 12 infinite families (two of them are actually conceptual constructions) and 22 isolated examples. We study in this paper the nature of each of these Einstein metrics as a critical point of the scalar curvature functional.

Extremally Ricci pinched G2-structures on Lie groups

Only two examples of extremally Ricci pinched G2-structures can be found in the literature and they are both homogeneous. We study in this paper the existence and structure of such very special closed G2-structures on Lie groups. Strong structural conditions on the Lie algebra are proved to hold. As an application, we obtain three new examples of extremally Ricci pinched G2-structures and that they are all necessarily steady Laplacian solitons. The deformation and rigidity of such structures are also studied.

Geometric flows and their solitons on homogeneous spaces

We develop a general approach to study geometric flows on homogeneous spaces. Our main tool will be a dynamical system defined on the variety of Lie algebras called the bracket flow, which coincides with the original geometric flow after a natural change of variables. The advantage of using this method relies on the fact that the possible pointed (or Cheeger-Gromov) limits of solutions, as well as self-similar solutions or soliton structures, can be much better visualized. The approach has already been worked out in the Ricci flow case and for general curvature flows of almost-hermitian structures on Lie groups. This paper is intended as an attempt to motivate the use of the method on homogeneous spaces for any flow of geometric structures under minimal natural assumptions. As a novel application, we find a closed G2-structure on a nilpotent Lie group which is an expanding soliton for the Laplacian flow and is not an eigenvector.

On the symplectic curvature flow for locally homogeneous manifolds

Recently, J. Streets and G. Tian introduced a natural way to evolve an almost-Kähler manifold called the symplectic curvature flow, in which the metric, the symplectic structure and the almost-complex structure are all evolving. We study in this paper different aspects of the flow on locally homogeneous manifolds, including long-time existence, solitons, regularity and convergence. We develop in detail two classes of Lie groups, which are relatively simple from a structural point of view but yet geometrically rich and exotic: solvable Lie groups with a codimension one abelian normal subgroup and a construction attached to each left symmetric algebra. As an application, we exhibit a soliton structure on most of symplectic surfaces which are Lie groups. A family of ancient solutions which develop a finite time singularity was found; neither their Chern scalar nor their scalar curvature are monotone along the flow and they converge in the pointed sense to a (non-Kähler) shrinking soliton solution on the same Lie group.

Curvature flows for almost-hermitian Lie groups

We study curvature flows in the locally homogeneous case (e.g. compact quotients of Lie groups, solvmanifolds, nilmanifolds) in a unified way, by considering a generic flow under just a few natural conditions on the broad class of almost-hermitian structures. As a main tool, we use an ODE system defined on the variety of 2n-dimensional Lie algebras, called the bracket flow, whose solutions differ from those to the original curvature flow by only pull-back by time-dependent diffeomorphisms. The approach, which has already been used to study the Ricci flow on homogeneous manifolds, is useful to better visualize the possible pointed limits of solutions, under diverse rescalings, as well as to address regularity issues. Immortal, ancient and self-similar solutions arise naturally from the qualitative analysis of the bracket flow. The Chern-Ricci flow and the symplectic curvature flow are considered in more detail.

On nonsingular two-step nilpotent Lie algebras

A 2-step nilpotent Lie algebra n is called nonsingular if ad(X): n --> [n,n] is onto for any X not in [n,n]. We explore nonsingular algebras in several directions, including the classification problem (isomorphism invariants), the existence of canonical inner products (nilsolitons) and their automorphism groups (maximality properties). Our main tools are the moment map for certain real reductive representations, and the Pfaffian form of a 2-step algebra, which is a positive homogeneous polynomial in the nonsingular case.

On the Chern-Ricci flow and its solitons for Lie groups

This paper is concerned with Chern-Ricci flow evolution of left-invariant hermitian structures on Lie groups. We study the behavior of a solution, as t is approaching the first time singularity, by rescaling in order to prevent collapsing and obtain convergence in the pointed (or Cheeger-Gromov) sense to a Chern-Ricci soliton. We give some results on the Chern-Ricci form and the Lie group structure of the pointed limit in terms of the starting hermitian metric and, as an application, we obtain a complete picture for the class of solvable Lie groups having a codimension one normal abelian subgroup. We have also found a Chern-Ricci soliton hermitian metric on most of the complex surfaces which are solvmanifolds, including an unexpected shrinking soliton example.

Structure of homogeneous Ricci solitons and the Alekseevskii conjecture

We bring new insights into the long-standing Alekseevskii conjecture, namely that any connected homogeneous Einstein manifold of negative scalar curvature is diffeomorphic to a Euclidean space, by proving structural results which are actually valid for any homogeneous expanding Ricci soliton, and generalize many well-known results on Einstein solvmanifolds, solvsolitons and nilsolitons. We obtain that any homogeneous expanding Ricci soliton M=G/K is diffeomorphic to a product U/K x N, where U is a maximal reductive Lie subgroup of G and N is the maximal nilpotent normal subgroup of G, such that the metric restricted to N is a nilsoliton. Moreover, strong compatibility conditions between the metric and the action of U on N by conjugation must hold, including a nice formula for the Ricci operator of the metric restricted to U/K. Our main tools come from geometric invariant theory. As an application, we give many Lie theoretical characterizations of algebraic solitons, as well as a proof of the fact that the following a priori much stronger result is actually equivalent to Alekseevskii's conjecture: Any expanding algebraic soliton is diffeomorphic to a Euclidean space.

Convergence of homogeneous manifolds

We study in this paper three natural notions of convergence of homogeneous manifolds, namely infinitesimal, local and pointed, and their relationship with a fourth one, which only takes into account the underlying algebraic structure of the homogeneous manifold and is indeed much more tractable. Along the way, we introduce a subset of the variety of Lie algebras which parameterizes the space of all n-dimensional simply connected homogeneous spaces with q-dimensional isotropy, providing a framework which is very advantageous to approach variational problems for curvature functionals as well as geometric evolution equations on homogeneous manifolds.

On homogeneous Ricci solitons

We study the evolution of homogeneous Ricci solitons under the bracket flow, a dynamical system on the space of all homogeneous spaces of dimension n with a q-dimensional isotropy, which is equivalent to the Ricci flow for homogeneous manifolds. We prove that algebraic solitons (i.e. the Ricci operator is a multiple of the identity plus a derivation) are precisely the fixed points of the system, and that a homogeneous Ricci soliton is isometric to an algebraic soliton if and only if the corresponding bracket flow solution is not chaotic, in the sense that its omega-limit set consists of a single point. We also geometrically characterize algebraic solitons among homogeneous Ricci solitons as those for which the Ricci flow solution is simultaneously diagonalizable.

Ricci flow of homogeneous manifolds

We present in this paper a general approach to study the Ricci flow on homogeneous manifolds. Our main tool is a dynamical system defined on a subset H(q,n) of the variety of (q+n)-dimensional Lie algebras, parameterizing the space of all simply connected homogeneous spaces of dimension n with a q-dimensional isotropy, which is proved to be equivalent in a precise sense to the Ricci flow. The approach is useful to better visualize the possible (nonflat) pointed limits of Ricci flow solutions, under diverse rescalings, as well as to determine the type of the possible singularities. Ancient solutions arise naturally from the qualitative analysis of the evolution equation. We develop two examples in detail: a 2-parameter subspace of H(1,3) reaching many 3-dimensional geometries, and a 2-parameter family in H(0,n) of left-invariant metrics on n-dimensional compact and non-compact semisimple Lie groups.

On the diagonalization of the Ricci flow on Lie groups

The main purpose of this note is to prove that any basis of a nilpotent Lie algebra for which all diagonal left-invariant metrics have diagonal Ricci tensor necessarily produce quite a simple set of structural constants; namely, the bracket of any pair of elements of the basis must be a multiple of some of them and only the bracket of disjoint pairs can be nonzero multiples of the same element. Some applications to the Ricci flow of left-invariant metrics on Lie groups concerning diagonalization are also given.

Quasi-Kähler Chern-flat manifolds and complex 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras

The study of quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian manifolds is strictly related to the study of anti-bi-invariant almost complex Lie algebras. In the present paper we show that quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian structures on compact manifolds are in correspondence to complex parallelisable Hermitian structures satisfying the second Gray identity. From an algebraic point of view this correspondence reads as a natural correspondence between anti-bi-invariant almost complex structures on Lie algebras to bi-invariant complex structures. Some natural algebraic problems are approached and some exotic examples are carefully described.

The Ricci flow for simply connected nilmanifolds

We prove that the Ricci flow g(t) starting at any metric on the euclidean space that is invariant by a transitive nilpotent Lie group N, can be obtained by solving an ODE for a curve of nilpotent Lie brackets. By using that this ODE is the negative gradient flow of a homogeneous polynomial, we obtain that g(t) is type-III, and, up to pull-back by time-dependent diffeomorphisms, that g(t) converges to the flat metric, and the rescaling |R(g(t))|g(t) converges smoothly to a Ricci soliton, uniformly on compact sets. The Ricci soliton limit is also invariant by some transitive nilpotent Lie group, though possibly non-isomorphic to N.

Einstein solvmanifolds are standard

We study Einstein manifolds admitting a transitive solvable Lie group of isometries (solvmanifolds). It is conjectured that these exhaust the class of noncompact homogeneous Einstein manifolds. J. Heber has showed that under certain simple algebraic condition called standard (i.e. the orthogonal complement of the derived algebra is abelian), Einstein solvmanifolds have many remarkable structural and uniqueness properties. In this paper, we prove that any Einstein solvmanifold is standard, by applying a stratification procedure from geometric invariant theory due to F. Kirwan.

Einstein solvmanifolds: existence and non-existence questions

The general aim of this paper is to study which are the solvable Lie groups admitting an Einstein left invariant metric. The space N of all nilpotent Lie brackets on R^n parametrizes a set of (n+1)-dimensional rank-one solvmanifolds, containing the set of all those which are Einstein in that dimension. The moment map for the natural GL(n)-action on N evaluated in a point of N encodes geometric information on the corresponding solvmanifold, allowing us to use strong and well-known results from geometric invariant theory. For instance, the functional on N whose critical points are precisely the Einstein solvmanifolds is the square norm of this moment map. We also use a GL(n)-invariant stratification for the space N following essentially a construction given by F. Kirwan and show that there is a strong interplay between the strata and the Einstein condition on the solvmanifolds. As applications, we obtain several examples of graded (even 2-step) nilpotent Lie algebras which are not the nilradicals of any standard Einstein solvmanifold, as well as a classification in the 7-dimensional 6-step case and an existence result for certain 2-step algebras associated to graphs.

Ricci soliton solvmanifolds

All known examples of nontrivial homogeneous Ricci solitons are left-invariant metrics on simply connected solvable Lie groups whose Ricci operator is a multiple of the identity modulo derivations (called solsolitons, and nilsolitons in the nilpotent case). The tools from geometric invariant theory used to study Einstein solvmanifolds, turned out to be useful in the study of solsolitons as well. We prove that, up to isometry, any solsoliton can be obtained via a very simple construction from a nilsoliton together with any abelian Lie algebra of symmetric derivations of its metric Lie algebra. The following uniqueness result is also obtained: a given solvable Lie group can admit at most one solsoliton up to isometry and scaling. As an application, solsolitons of dimension at most 4 are classified.
