Blandford--Znajek monopole expansion revisited: novel non-analytic contributions to the power emission

The Blandford and Znajek (BZ) split-monopole serves as an important theoretical example of the mechanism that can drive the electromagnetic extraction of energy from Kerr black holes. It is constructed as a perturbative low spin solution of Force Free Electrodynamics (FFE). Recently, Armas $et~al.$ put this construction on a firmer footing by clearing up issues with apparent divergent asymptotics. This was accomplished by resolving the behavior around the outer light surface, a critical surface of the FFE equations. Building on this, we revisit the BZ perturbative expansion, and extend the perturbative approach to higher orders in the spin parameter of the Kerr black hole. We employ matched-asymptotic-expansions and semi-analytic techniques to extend the split-monopole solution to the sixth-order in perturbation theory. The expansion necessarily includes novel logarithmic contributions in the spin parameter. We show that these higher order terms result in non-analytic contributions to the power and angular momentum output. In particular, we compute for the first time the perturbative contributions to the energy extraction at seventh- and eighth-order in the spin parameter. The resulting formula for the energy extraction improves the agreement with numerical simulations at finite spin. Moreover, we present a novel numerical procedure for resolving the FFE equations across the outer light surface, resulting in significantly faster convergence and greater accuracy, and extend this to higher orders as well. Finally, we include a general discussion of light surfaces as critical surfaces of the FFE equations.

Constraints on Kerr-Newman black holes from merger-ringdown gravitational-wave observations

We construct a template to model the post-merger phase of a binary black hole coalescence in the presence of a remnant $U(1)$ charge. We include the quasi-normal modes typically dominant during a binary black hole coalescence, $(\ell,m,n) = \{(2,2,0), (2,2,1)\}$ and also present analytical fits for the quasinormal mode frequencies of a Kerr-Newman black hole in terms of its spin and charge, here also including the $(3,3,0)$ mode. Aside from astrophysical electric charge, our template can accommodate extensions of the Standard Model, such as a dark photon. Applying the model to LIGO-Virgo detections, we find that we are unable to distinguish between the charged and uncharged hypotheses from a purely post-merger analysis of the current events. However, restricting the mass and spin to values compatible with the analysis of the full signal, we obtain a 90th percentile bound $\bar{q} < 0.33$ on the black hole charge-to-mass ratio, for the most favorable case of GW150914. Under similar assumptions, by simulating a typical loud signal observed by the LIGO-Virgo network at its design sensitivity, we assess that this model can provide a robust measurement of the charge-to-mass ratio only for values $\bar{q} \gtrsim 0.5$; here we also assume that the mode amplitudes are similar to the uncharged case in creating our simulated signal. Lower values, down to $\bar{q} \sim 0.3$, could instead be detected when evaluating the consistency of the pre-merger and post-merger emission.

Eigenvalue repulsions and quasinormal mode spectra of Kerr-Newman: an extended study

The frequency spectra of the gravito-electromagnetic perturbations of the Kerr-Newman (KN) black hole with the slowest decay rate have been computed recently. It has been found that KN has two families $-$ the photon sphere and the near-horizon families $-$ of quasinormal modes (QNMs), which display the interesting phenomenon of eigenvalue repulsion. The perturbation equations, in spite of being a coupled system of two PDEs, are amenable to an analytic solution using the method of separation of variables in a near-horizon expansion around the extremal KN black hole. This leads to an analytical formula for the QNM frequencies that provides an excellent approximation to the numerical data near-extremality. In the present manuscript we provide an extended study of these properties that were not detailed in the original studies. This includes: 1) a full derivation of a gauge invariant system of two coupled PDEs that describes the perturbation equations \cite{Dias:2015wqa}, 2) a derivation of the eikonal frequency approximation \cite{Zimmerman:2015trm,Dias:2021yju} and its comparison with the numerical QNM data, 3) a derivation of the near-horizon frequency approximation \cite{Dias:2021yju} and its comparison with the numerical QNMs, and 4) more details on the phenomenon of eigenvalue repulsion (also known as \emph{level repulsion}, \emph{avoided crossing} or \emph{Wigner-Teller effect}) and a first principles understanding of it that was missing in the previous studies. Moreover, we provide the frequency spectra of other KN QNM families of interest to demonstrate that they are more damped than the ones we discuss in full detail.

Stringy corrections to the entropy of electrically charged supersymmetric black holes with $\mathrm{AdS}_5\times S^5$ asymptotics

We study the leading $α^\prime$ corrections to the entropy of certain black holes with AdS$_5\times S^5$ asymptotics. We find that, in the supersymmetric limit, the entropy does not receive $α^\prime$ corrections. This result strengthens recent calculations that match the index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills with the corresponding partition function in the supersymmetric limit. In the small temperature regime, we find that the entropy corrections are concordant with the weak gravity conjecture.

Strong Cosmic Censorship and Eigenvalue Repulsions for rotating de Sitter black holes in higher-dimensions

It has been established that Christodoulou's formulation of Strong Cosmic Censorship (SCC) is violated by Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes, but holds in four-dimensional Kerr-de Sitter black holes. We show that SCC is also respected by equal angular momenta (cohomogeneity-1) Myers-Perry-de Sitter (MP-dS) in odd $d \ge 5$ spacetime dimensions. This suggests that the preservation of SCC in rotating backgrounds might be a universal property of Einstein gravity and not limited to the d = 4 Kerr-dS background. As required to discuss SCC in de Sitter spacetimes, we also study important aspects of the scalar field quasinormal mode (QNM) spectra of MP-dS. In particular, we find eigenvalue repulsions similar to those recently observed in the QNM spectra of asymptotically flat Kerr-Newman black holes. For axisymmetric modes (i.e. with azimuthal quantum number m = 0) there are three distinct families of QNM (de Sitter, photon sphere and near-horizon). However, typically, for non-axisymmetric ($m \ne 0$) QNMs, we find that the entire spectra can be described by just two families of QNM (since several overtone sections of the photon sphere and near-horizon families merge). For completeness, we also study the full scalar field QNM spectra of higher-dimensional Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes.

The Canonical Ensemble Reloaded: The Complex-Stability of Euclidean quantum gravity for Black Holes in a Box

We revisit the stability of black hole saddles for the Euclidean path integral describing the canonical partition function $Z(β)$ for gravity inside a spherical reflecting cavity. The boundary condition at the cavity wall couples the transverse-traceless (TT) and pure-trace modes that are traditionally used to describe fluctuations about Euclidean Schwarzschild black holes in infinite-volume asymptotically flat and asymototically AdS spacetimes. This coupling obstructs the familiar Gibbons-Hawking-Perry treatment of the conformal factor problem, as Wick rotation of the pure-trace modes would require that the TT modes be rotated as well. The coupling also leads to complex eigenvalues for the Łoperator. We nevertheless find that the Łoperator can be diagonalized in the space of coupled modes. This observation allows the eigenmodes to define a natural generalization of the pure-trace Wick-rotation recipe used in infinite volume, with the result that a mode with eigenvalue $λ$ is stable when ${\rm Re}\,λ> 0$. In any cavity, and with any cosmological constant $Λ\le 0$, we show this recipe to reproduce the expectation from black hole thermodynamics that large Euclidean black holes define stable saddles while the saddles defined by small Euclidean black holes are unstable.

Diving into a holographic superconductor

Charged black holes in anti-de Sitter space become unstable to forming charged scalar hair at low temperatures $T < T_\text{c}$. This phenomenon is a holographic realization of superconductivity. We look inside the horizon of these holographic superconductors and find intricate dynamical behavior. The spacetime ends at a spacelike Kasner singularity, and there is no Cauchy horizon. Before reaching the singularity, there are several intermediate regimes which we study both analytically and numerically. These include strong Josephson oscillations in the condensate and possible 'Kasner inversions' in which after many e-folds of expansion, the Einstein-Rosen bridge contracts towards the singularity. Due to the Josephson oscillations, the number of Kasner inversions depends very sensitively on $T$, and diverges at a discrete set of temperatures $\{T_n\}$ that accumulate at $T_c$. Near these $T_n$, the final Kasner exponent exhibits fractal-like behavior.

Eigenvalue repulsions in the quasinormal spectra of the Kerr-Newman black hole

We study the gravito-electromagnetic perturbations of the Kerr-Newman (KN) black hole metric and identify the two $-$ photon sphere and near-horizon $-$ families of quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the KN black hole, computing the frequency spectra (for all the KN parameter space) of the modes with the slowest decay rate. We uncover a novel phenomenon for QNMs that is unique to the KN system, namely eigenvalue repulsion between QNM families. Such a feature is common in solid state physics where \eg it is responsible for energy bands/gaps in the spectra of electrons moving in certain Schrödinger potentials. Exploiting the enhanced symmetries of the near-horizon limit of the near-extremal KN geometry we also develop a matching asymptotic expansion that allows us to solve the perturbation problem using separation of variables and provides an excellent approximation to the KN QNM spectra near extremality. The KN QNM spectra here derived are required not only to account for the gravitational emission in astrophysical environments, such as the ones probed by LIGO, Virgo and LISA, but also allow to extract observational implications on several new physics scenarios, such as mini-charged dark-matter or certain modified theories of gravity, degenerate with the KN solution at the scales of binary mergers.

Inside an Asymptotically Flat Hairy Black Hole

We study the interior of a recently constructed family of asymptotically flat, charged black holes that develop (charged) scalar hair as one increases their charge at fixed mass. Inside the horizon, these black holes resemble the interior of a holographic superconductor. There are analogs of the Josephson oscillations of the scalar field, and the final Kasner singularity depends very sensitively on the black hole parameters near the onset of the instability. In an Appendix, we give a general argument that Cauchy horizons cannot exist in a large class of stationary black holes with scalar hair.

Rotating black holes in Randall-Sundrum II braneworlds

We find rotating black hole solutions in the Randall-Sundrum II (RSII) model, by numerically solving a three-dimensional PDE problem using pseudospectral collocation methods. We compute the area and equatorial inner-most stable orbits of these solutions. For large black holes compared with the AdS length scale, $\ell$, the black hole exhibits four-dimensional behaviour, approaching the Kerr metric on the brane, whilst for small black holes, the solution tends instead towards a five-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole with a single non-zero rotation parameter aligned with the brane. This departure from exact four-dimensional gravity may lead to different phenomenological predictions for rotating black holes in the RSII model to those in standard four-dimensional general relativity. This letter provides a stepping stone for studying such modifications.

Crossing a large-$N$ phase transition at finite volume

The existence of phase-separated states is an essential feature of infinite-volume systems with a thermal, first-order phase transition. At energies between those at which the phase transition takes place, equilibrium homogeneous states are either metastable or suffer from a spinodal instability. In this range the stable states are inhomogeneous, phase-separated states. We use holography to investigate how this picture is modified at finite volume in a strongly coupled, four-dimensional gauge theory. We work in the planar limit, $N \to \infty$, which ensures that we remain in the thermodynamic limit. We uncover a rich set of inhomogeneous states dual to lumpy black branes on the gravity side, as well as first- and second-order phase transitions between them. We establish their local (in)stability properties and show that fully non-linear time evolution in the bulk takes unstable states to stable ones.

Developing local RG: quantum RG and BFSS

In this paper we study various forms of RG, applying them to the BFSS model of $N$ coincident D0-branes. Firstly, as a warm-up, we perform standard Wilsonian RG, investigating the conditions under which supersymmetry is preserved along the flow. Next, we develop a local RG scheme such that the cutoff is spacetime dependent, which could have further applications to studying QFT in curved spacetime. Finally, we test the conjecture put forward in arXiv:1305.3908 that the method of quantum RG could be the mechanism responsible for the gauge/gravity duality by applying it to the BFSS model, which has a known gravitational dual. Although not entirely conclusive some questions are raised about the applicability of quantum RG as a description of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Entanglement islands in higher dimensions

It has been suggested in recent work that the Page curve of Hawking radiation can be recovered using computations in semi-classical gravity provided one allows for "islands" in the gravity region of quantum systems coupled to gravity. The explicit computations so far have been restricted to black holes in two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. In this note, we numerically construct a five-dimensional asymptotically AdS geometry whose boundary realizes a four-dimensional Hartle-Hawking state on an eternal AdS black hole in equilibrium with a bath. We also numerically find two types of extremal surfaces: ones that correspond to having or not having an island. The version of the information paradox involving the eternal black hole exists in this setup, and it is avoided by the presence of islands. Thus, recent computations exhibiting islands in two-dimensional gravity generalize to higher dimensions as well.

Plausible scenario for a generic violation of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in asymptotically flat four dimensions

We present a plausible counterexample to the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in the four-dimensional Einstein-Scalar theory with asymptotically flat boundary conditions. Our setup stems from the analysis of the massive Klein-Gordon equation on a fixed Kerr black hole background. In particular, we construct the quasinormal spectrum numerically, and analytically in the WKB approximation, then go on to compute its backreaction on the Kerr geometry. In the regime of parameters where the analytic and numerical techniques overlap we find perfect agreement. We give strong evidence for the existence of a nonlinear instability at late times.

Superradiant instability of black resonators and geons

Black resonators and geons in global AdS are rapidly rotating, low-energy solutions with a helical Killing field. We study the linear mode stability of equal angular momenta, five-dimensional black resonators and geons under scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational perturbations. We find that black resonators are unstable to the superradiant instability, in agreement with previously known results. Perhaps surprisingly, many geons appear linearly stable, despite having an ergoregion. This apparent stability implies that geons are important long-lived, low-energy states in the dual gauge theory. However, we do find that geons are unstable within a certain range of parameter space. We comment on the nature of this instability and to its possible endpoints. We also report on new non-spinning oscillating geons, which we construct within a cohomogeneity two ansatz. Given the existing arguments that suggest our linear stability results may be extended nonlinearly, our findings indicate that most geons are generic and long-lived solutions.

The origin of the Reissner-Nordström de Sitter instability

We give strong numerical evidence for the existence of an instability afflicting six-dimensional Reissner-Nordström de Sitter (RNdS) black holes. This instability is akin of the Konoplya-Zhidenko instability present in RNdS black holes in seven spacetime dimensions and above. Moreover, we perform a detailed analysis of the near-horizon limit of extremal RNdS black holes, and find that unstable gravitational modes effectively behave as a massive scalar field whose mass violates the AdS$_2$ Breitenlöhner-Freedman bound (if and only if $d\geq 6$), thus providing a physical argument for the existence of the instability. Finally, we show that the frequency spectrum of perturbations of RNdS has a remarkable intricate structure with several bifurcations/mergers that appears unique to RNdS black holes

To go or not to go with the flow: Hawking radiation at strong coupling

We construct the gravitational dual of a one-parameter class of states of strongly coupled $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at infinite $N$ and asymptotic temperature $T_{\infty}$, on a fixed Schwarzschild black hole background with temperature $T_{\mathrm{BH}}$. The resulting bulk geometry is of the flowing type and allow us to measure Hawking radiation at strong coupling. The outgoing Hawking flux is a function of the dimensionless ratio $τ\equiv T_{\infty}/T_{\mathrm{BH}}$ and appears to be non-monotonic in $τ$. At present, we have no field theory understanding for this behaviour.

Creating a Traversable Wormhole

We argue that one can nucleate a traversable wormhole via a nonperturbative process in quantum gravity. To support this, we construct spacetimes in which there are instantons giving a finite probability for a test cosmic string to break and produce two particles on its ends. One should be able to replace the particles with small black holes with only small changes to the spacetime away from the horizons. The black holes are then created with their horizons identified, so this is an example of nucleating a wormhole. Unlike previous examples where the created black holes accelerate apart, in our case they remain essentially at rest. This is important since wormholes become harder and harder to make traversable as their mouths become widely separated, and since traversability can be destroyed by Unruh radiation. In our case, back-reaction from quantum fields can make the wormhole traversable.

Massive vector fields in Kerr--Newman and Kerr--Sen black hole spacetimes

The superradiant instability modes of ultralight massive vector bosons are studied for weakly charged rotating black holes in Einstein--Maxwell gravity (the Kerr--Newman solution) and low-energy heterotic string theory (the Kerr--Sen black hole). We show that in both these cases, the corresponding massive vector (Proca) equations can be fully separated, exploiting the hidden symmetry present in these spacetimes. The resultant ordinary differential equations are solved numerically to find the most unstable modes of the Proca field in the two backgrounds and compared to the vacuum (Kerr black hole) case.

Phases of Holographic Hawking Radiation on spatially compact spacetimes

We study phases of equilibrium Hawking radiation in $d$-dimensional holographic CFTs on spatially compact spacetimes with two black holes. In the particular phases chosen the dual $(d+1)$-dimensional bulk solutions describe a variety of black funnels and droplets. In the former the CFT readily conducts heat between the two black holes, but it in the latter such conduction is highly suppressed. While the generic case can be understood in certain extreme limits of parameters on general grounds, we focus on CFTs on specific geometries conformally equivalent to a pair of $d \ge 4$ AdS${}_d$-Schwarzschild black holes of radius $R$. Such cases allow perturbative analyses of non-uniform funnels associated with Gregory-Laflamme zero-modes. For $d=4$ we construct a phase diagram for pure funnels and droplets by constructing the desired bulk solutions numerically. The fat non-uniform funnel is a particular interesting phase that dominates at small $R$ (due to having lowest free energy) despite being sub-dominant in the perturbative regime. The uniform funnel dominates at large $R$, and droplets and thin funnels dominate at certain intermediate values. The thin funnel phase provides a mystery as it dominates over our other phases all that way to a critical $R_{\mathrm{turn}}$ beyond which it fails to exist. The free energy of the system thus appears to be discontinuous at $R_{\mathrm{turn}}$, but such discontinuities are forbidden by the 2nd law. A new more-dominant phase is thus required near $R_{\mathrm{turn}}$ but the nature of this phase remains unclear.

The BTZ black hole violates strong cosmic censorship

We investigate the stability of the inner horizon of a rotating BTZ black hole. We show that linear perturbations arising from smooth initial data are arbitrarily differentiable at the inner horizon if the black hole is sufficiently close to extremality. This is demonstrated for scalar fields, for massive Chern-Simons fields, for Proca fields, and for massive spin-2 fields. Thus the strong cosmic censorship conjecture is violated by a near-extremal BTZ black hole in a large class of theories. However, we show that a weaker "rough" version of the conjecture is respected. We calculate the renormalized energy-momentum tensor of a scalar field in the Hartle-Hawking state in the BTZ geometry. We show that the result is finite at the inner horizon of a near-extremal black hole. Hence the backreaction of vacuum polarization does not enforce strong cosmic censorship.

AdS nonlinear instability: moving beyond spherical symmetry

Anti-de Sitter (AdS) is conjectured to be nonlinear unstable to a weakly turbulent mechanism that develops a cascade towards high frequencies, leading to black hole formation [1,2]. We give evidence that the gravitational sector of perturbations behaves differently from the scalar one studied in [2]. In contrast with [2], we find that not all gravitational normal modes of AdS can be nonlinearly extended into periodic horizonless smooth solutions of the Einstein equation. In particular, we show that even seeds with a single normal mode can develop secular resonances, unlike the spherically symmetric scalar field collapse studied in [2]. Moreover, if the seed has two normal modes, more than one resonance can be generated at third order, unlike the spherical collapse of [2]. We also show that weak turbulent perturbative theory predicts the existence of direct and inverse cascades, with the former dominating the latter for equal energy two-mode seeds.

Entropy production, viscosity bounds and bumpy black holes

The ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, $η/s$, is computed in various holographic geometries that break translation invariance (but are isotropic). The shear viscosity does not have a hydrodynamic interpretation in such backgrounds, but does quantify the rate of entropy production due to a strain. Fluctuations of the metric components $δg_{xy}$ are massive about these backgrounds, leading to $η/s < 1/(4π)$ at all finite temperatures (even in Einstein gravity). As the temperature is taken to zero, different behaviors are possible. If translation symmetry breaking is irrelevant in the far IR, then $η/s$ tends to a constant at $T=0$. This constant can be parametrically small. If the translation symmetry is broken in the far IR (which nonetheless develops emergent scale invariance), then $η/s \sim T^{2 ν}$ as $T \to 0$, with $ν\leq 1$ in all cases we have considered. While these results violate simple bounds on $η/s$, we note that they are consistent with a possible bound on the rate of entropy production due to strain.

Evidence for an Electrifying Violation of Cosmic Censorship

We present a plausible counterexample to cosmic censorship in four dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions. Smooth initial data evolves to a region of arbitrarily large curvature that is visible to distant observers. Our example is based on a holographic model of an electrically charged, localised defect which was previously studied at zero temperature. We partially extend those results to nonzero temperatures.

Hairy Black Holes in AdS$_5\times S^5$

We use numerical methods to exhaustively study a novel family of hairy black hole solutions in AdS$_5$. These solutions can be uplifted to solutions of type IIB supergravity with AdS$_5\times S^5$ asymptotics and are thus expected to play an important role in our understanding of AdS/CFT. We find an intricate phase diagram, with the aforementioned family of hairy black hole solutions branching from the Reissner-Nordström black hole at the onset of the superradiance instability. We analyse black holes with spherical and planar horizon topology and explain how they connect in the phase diagram. Finally, we detail their global and local thermodynamic stability across several ensembles.

Instability of supersymmetric microstate geometries

We investigate the classical stability of supersymmetric, asymptotically flat, microstate geometries with five non-compact dimensions. Such geometries admit an "evanescent ergosurface": a timelike hypersurface of infinite redshift. On such a surface, there are null geodesics with zero energy relative to infinity. These geodesics are stably trapped in the potential well near the ergosurface. We present a heuristic argument indicating that this feature is likely to lead to a nonlinear instability of these solutions. We argue that the precursor of such an instability can be seen in the behaviour of linear perturbations: nonlinear stability would require that all linear perturbations decay sufficiently rapidly but the stable trapping implies that some linear perturbation decay very slowly. We study this in detail for the most symmetric microstate geometries. By constructing quasinormal modes of these geometries we show that generic linear perturbations decay slower than any inverse power of time.

Localised $\bf{AdS_5\times S^5}$ Black Holes

We numerically construct asymptotically global $\mathrm{AdS}_5\times \mathrm{S}^5$ black holes that are localised on the $\mathrm{S}^5$. These are solutions to type IIB supergravity with $\mathrm S^8$ horizon topology that dominate the theory in the microcanonical ensemble at small energies. At higher energies, there is a first-order phase transition to $\mathrm{AdS}_5$-Schwarzschild$\times \mathrm{S}^5$. By the AdS/CFT correspondence, this transition is dual to spontaneously breaking the $SO(6)$ R-symmetry of $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills down to $SO(5)$. We extrapolate the location of this phase transition and compute the expectation value of the resulting scalar operators in the low energy phase.

Black holes with a single Killing vector field: black resonators

We numerically construct asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in four dimensions that contain only a single Killing vector field. These solutions, which we coin black resonators, link the superradiant instability of Kerr-AdS to the nonlinear weakly turbulent instability of AdS by connecting the onset of the superradiance instability to smooth, horizonless geometries called geons. Furthermore, they demonstrate non-uniqueness of Kerr-AdS by sharing asymptotic charges. Where black resonators coexist with Kerr-AdS, we find that the black resonators have higher entropy. Nevertheless, we show that black resonators are unstable and comment on the implications for the endpoint of the superradiant instability.

Emergent scale invariance of disordered horizons

We construct planar black hole solutions in AdS_3 and AdS_4 in which the boundary CFT is perturbed by marginally relevant quenched disorder. We show that the entropy density of the horizon has the scaling temperature dependence s \sim T^{(d-1)/z} (with d=2,3). The dynamical critical exponent z is computed numerically and, at weak disorder, analytically. These results lend support to the claim that the perturbed CFT flows to a disordered quantum critical theory in the IR.

Hovering Black Holes from Charged Defects

We construct the holographic dual of an electrically charged, localised defect in a conformal field theory at strong coupling, by applying a spatially dependent chemical potential. We find that the IR behaviour of the spacetime depends on the spatial falloff of the potential. Moreover, for sufficiently localized defects with large amplitude, we find that a new gravitational phenomenon occurs: a spherical extremal charged black hole nucleates in the bulk: a hovering black hole. This is a second order quantum phase transition. We construct this new phase with several profiles for the chemical potential and study its properties. We find an apparently universal behaviour for the entropy of the defect as a function of its amplitude. We comment on the possible field theory implications of our results.

Linear mode stability of Kerr-Newman and its quasinormal modes

We provide strong evidence that, up to $99.999\%$ of extremality, Kerr-Newman black holes (KN BHs) are linear mode stable within Einstein-Maxwell theory. We derive and solve, numerically, a coupled system of two PDEs for two gauge invariant fields that describe the most general linear perturbations of a KN BH (except for trivial modes that shift the parameters of the solution). We determine the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of the KN BH as a function of its three parameters and find no unstable modes. In addition, we find that the QNMs that are connected continuously to the gravitational $\ell=m=2$ Schwarzschild QNM dominate the spectrum for all values of the parameter space ($m$ is the azimuthal number of the wave function and $\ell$ measures the number of nodes along the polar direction). Furthermore, all QNMs with $\ell=m$ approach Re$\,ω= m Ω_H^{ext}$ and Im$\,ω=0$ at extremality; this is a universal property for any field of arbitrary spin $|s|\leq 2$ propagating on a KN BH background ($ω$ is the wave frequency and $Ω_H^{ext}$ the BH angular velocity at extremality). We compare our results with available perturbative results in the small charge or small rotation regimes and find good agreement. We also present a simple proof that the Regge-Wheeler (odd) and Zerilli (even) sectors of Schwarzschild perturbations must be isospectral.

Lumpy AdS$\bf{_5\times}$ S$\bf{^5}$ Black Holes and Black Belts

Sufficiently small Schwarzschild black holes in global AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ are Gregory-Laflamme unstable. We construct new families of black hole solutions that bifurcate from the onset of this instability and break the full SO$(6)$ symmetry group of the S$^5$ down to SO$(5)$. These new "lumpy" solutions are labelled by the harmonics $\ell$. We find evidence that the $\ell = 1$ branch never dominates the microcanonical/canonical ensembles and connects through a topology-changing merger to a localised black hole solution with S$^8$ topology. We argue that these S$^8$ black holes should become the dominant phase in the microcanonical ensemble for small enough energies, and that the transition to Schwarzschild black holes is first order. Furthermore, we find two branches of solutions with $\ell = 2$. We expect one of these branches to connect to a solution containing two localised black holes, while the other branch connects to a black hole solution with horizon topology $\mathrm S^4\times\mathrm S^4$ which we call a "black belt".

Numerical Methods for Finding Stationary Gravitational Solutions

The wide applications of higher dimensional gravity and gauge/gravity duality have fuelled the search for new stationary solutions of the Einstein equation (possibly coupled to matter). In this topical review, we explain the mathematical foundations and give a practical guide for the numerical solution of gravitational boundary value problems. We present these methods by way of example: resolving asymptotically flat black rings, singly-spinning lumpy black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS), and the Gregory-Laflamme zero modes of small rotating black holes in AdS$_5\times S^5$. We also include several tools and tricks that have been useful throughout the literature.

On the stability of gravity with Dirichlet walls

Dirichlet walls -- timelike boundaries at finite distance from the bulk on which the induced metric is held fixed -- have been used to model AdS spacetimes with a finite cutoff. In the context of gauge/gravity duality, such models are often described as dual to some novel UV-cufoff version of a corresponding CFT that maintains local Lorentz invariance. We study linearized gravity in the presence of such a wall and find it to differ significantly from the seemingly-analogous case of Dirichlet boundary conditions for fields of spins zero and one. In particular, using the Kodama-Ishibashi formalism, the boundary condition that must be imposed on scalar-sector master field with harmonic time dependence depends explicitly on their frequency. That this feature first arises for spin-2 appears to be related to the second-order nature of the equations of motion. It gives rise to a number of novel instabilities, though both global and planar Anti-de Sitter remain (linearly) stable in the presence of large-radius Dirichlet cutoffs. The instabilities arise on the outside of spherical Dirichlet walls, and also inside sufficiently large such spherical walls in de Sitter space. We analyze both inside and outside of flat and spherical walls in Minkowski, de Sitter, and anti-de Sitter space, as well as in certain black hole spacetimes and find stability for cases not mentioned above. In particular, we find no linear instabilities in the presence of flat walls. We also find evidence supporting the conjecture that neutral black holes are repelled by Dirichlet walls.

Polarised Black Holes in AdS

We consider solutions in Einstein-Maxwell theory with a negative cosmological constant that asymptote to global $AdS_{4}$ with conformal boundary $S^{2}\times\mathbb{R}_{t}$. At the sphere at infinity we turn on a space-dependent electrostatic potential, which does not destroy the asymptotic $AdS$ behaviour. For simplicity we focus on the case of a dipolar electrostatic potential. We find two new geometries: (i) an $AdS$ soliton that includes the full backreaction of the electric field on the $AdS$ geometry; (ii) a polarised neutral black hole that is deformed by the electric field, accumulating opposite charges in each hemisphere. For both geometries we study boundary data such as the charge density and the stress tensor. For the black hole we also study the horizon charge density and area, and further verify a Smarr formula. Then we consider this system at finite temperature and compute the Gibbs free energy for both $AdS$ soliton and black hole phases. The corresponding phase diagram generalizes the Hawking-Page phase transition. The $AdS$ soliton dominates the low temperature phase and the black hole the high temperature phase, with a critical temperature that decreases as the external electric field increases. Finally, we consider the simple case of a free charged scalar field on $S^{2}\times\mathbb{R}_{t}$ with conformal coupling. For a field in the $SU(N)$ adjoint representation we compare the phase diagram with the above gravitational system.

The Black Ring is Unstable

We study non-axisymmetric linearised gravitational perturbations of the Emparan-Reall black ring using numerical methods. We find an unstable mode whose onset lies within the "fat" branch of the black ring and continues into the "thin" branch. Together with previous results using Penrose inequalities that fat black rings are unstable, this provides numerical evidence that the entire black ring family is unstable.

Thermal conductivity at a disordered quantum critical point

Strongly disordered and strongly interacting quantum critical points are difficult to access with conventional field theoretic methods. They are, however, both experimentally important and theoretically interesting. In particular, they are expected to realize universal incoherent transport. Such disordered quantum critical theories have recently been constructed holographically by deforming a CFT by marginally relevant disorder. In this paper we find additional disordered fixed points via relevant disordered deformations of a holographic CFT. Using recently developed methods in holographic transport, we characterize the thermal conductivity in both sets of theories in 1+1 dimensions. The thermal conductivity is found to tend to a constant at low temperatures in one class of fixed points, and to scale as $T^{0.3}$ in the other. Furthermore, in all cases the thermal conductivity exhibits discrete scale invariance, with logarithmic in temperature oscillations superimposed on the low temperature scaling behavior. At no point do we use the replica trick.

Black Droplets

Black droplets and black funnels are gravitational duals to states of a large N, strongly coupled CFT on a fixed black hole background. We numerically construct black droplets corresponding to a CFT on a Schwarzchild background with finite asymptotic temperature. We find two branches of such droplet solutions which meet at a turning point. Our results suggest that the equilibrium black droplet solution does not exist, which would imply that the Hartle-Hawking state in this system is dual to the black funnel constructed in \cite{Santos:2012he}. We also compute the holographic stress energy tensor and match its asymptotic behaviour to perturbation theory.

Cold planar horizons are floppy

Extremal planar black holes of four dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a negative cosmological constant have an AdS$_2 \times \R^2$ near horizon geometry. We show that this near horizon geometry admits a deformation to a two parameter family of extremal geometries with inhomogeneous, spatially periodic horizons. At a linear level, static inhomogeneous perturbations of AdS$_2 \times \R^2$ decay towards the horizon and thus appear irrelevant under the holographic RG flow. However we have found numerically that nonlinear effects lead to inhomogeneous near horizon geometries. A consequence of these observations is that an arbitrarily small periodic deformation of the boundary theory at nonzero charge density does not flow to AdS$_2 \times \R^2$ in the IR, but rather to an inhomogeneous horizon. These results shed light on existing numerical studies of low temperature periodically modulated black holes and also offer a new mechanism for holographic metal-insulator crossovers or transitions.

Disordered horizons: Holography of randomly disordered fixed points

We deform conformal field theories with classical gravity duals by marginally relevant random disorder. We show that the disorder generates a flow to IR fixed points with a finite amount of disorder. The randomly disordered fixed points are characterized by a dynamical critical exponent $z>1$ that we obtain both analytically (via resummed perturbation theory) and numerically (via a full simulation of the disorder). The IR dynamical critical exponent increases with the magnitude of disorder, probably tending to $z \to \infty$ in the limit of infinite disorder.

Quasinormal modes of asymptotically flat rotating black holes

We study the main properties of general linear perturbations of rotating black holes in asymptotically flat higher-dimensional spacetimes. In particular, we determine the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of singly spinning and equal angular momenta Myers-Perry black holes (MP BHs). Emphasis is also given to the timescale of the ultraspinning and bar-mode instabilities in these two families of MP BHs. For the bar-mode instabilities in the singly spinning MP BH, we find excellent agreement with our linear analysis and the non-linear time evolution of Shibata and Yoshino for d=6,7 spacetime dimensions. We find that d=5 singly spinning BHs are linearly stable. In the context of studying general relativity in the large dimension limit, we obtain the QNM spectrum of Schwarzschild BHs and rotating MP BHs for large dimensions. We identify two classes of modes. For large dimensions, we find that in the limit of zero rotation, unstable modes of the MP BHs connect to a class of Schwarzschild QNMs that saturate to finite values.

Rings, Ripples, and Rotation: Connecting Black Holes to Black Rings

Singly-spinning Myers-Perry black holes in d>5 spacetime dimensions are unstable for sufficiently large angular momentum. We numerically construct (in d=6 and d=7) two new stationary branches of lumpy (rippled) black hole solutions which bifurcate from the onset of this ultraspinning instability. We give evidence that one of these branches connects through a topology-changing merger to black ring solutions which we also construct numerically. The other branch approaches a solution with large curvature invariants. We are also able to compare the d=7 ring solutions with results from finite-size corrections to the blackfold approach, finding excellent agreement.

Vortices in holographic superfluids and superconductors as conformal defects

We present a detailed study of a single vortex in a holographic symmetry breaking phase. At low energies the system flows to an nontrivial conformal fixed point. Novel vortex physics arises from the interaction of these gapless degrees of freedom with the vortex: at low energies the vortex may be understood as a conformal defect in this low energy theory. Defect conformal symmetry allows the construction of a simple infrared geometry describing a new kind of extremal horizon: a Poincare horizon with a small bubble of magnetic Reissner-Nordstrom horizon inside it that carries a single unit of magnetic flux and a finite amount of entropy even at zero temperature. We also construct the full geometry describing the vortex at finite temperature in a UV complete theory. We study both superfluid and superconducting boundary conditions and calculate thermodynamic properties of the vortex. A study of vortex stability reveals that the dual superconductor can be Type I or Type II, depending on the charge of the condensed scalar. Finally, we study forces on a moving vortex at finite temperature from the point of view of defect conformal symmetry and show that these forces can be expressed in terms of Kubo formulas of defect CFT operators.

A Simple Holographic Model of Nonlinear Conductivity

We present a simple analytic gravitational solution which describes the holographic dual of a 2+1-dimensional conductor which goes beyond the usual linear response. In particular it includes Joule heating. We find that the nonlinear frequency-dependent conductivity is a constant. Surprisingly, the pressure remains isotropic. We also apply an electric field to a holographic insulator and show that there is a maximum electric field below which it can remain an insulator. Above this critical value, we argue that it becomes a conductor due to pair creation of charged particles. Finally, we study 1+1 and 3+1 dimensional conductors at the nonlinear level; here exact solutions are not available and a perturbative analysis shows that the current becomes time dependent, but in a way that is captured by a time-dependent effective temperature.

AdS flowing black funnels: Stationary AdS black holes with non-Killing horizons and heat transport in the dual CFT

We construct stationary non-equilibrium black funnels locally asymptotic to global AdS4 in vacuum Einstein-Hilbert gravity with negative cosmological constant. These are non-compactly-generated black holes in which a single connected bulk horizon extends to meet the conformal boundary. Thus the induced (conformal) boundary metric has smooth horizons as well. In our examples, the boundary spacetime contains a pair of black holes connected through the bulk by a tubular bulk horizon. Taking one boundary black hole to be hotter than the other ($ΔT \neq 0$) prohibits equilibrium. The result is a so-called flowing funnel, a stationary bulk black hole with a non-Killing horizon that may be said to transport heat toward the cooler boundary black hole. While generators of the bulk future horizon evolve toward zero expansion in the far future, they begin at finite affine parameter with infinite expansion on a singular past horizon characterized by power-law divergences with universal exponents. We explore both the horizon generators and the boundary stress tensor in detail. While most of our results are numerical, a semi-analytic fluid/gravity description can be obtained by passing to a one-parameter generalization of the above boundary conditions. The new parameter detunes the temperatures $T_{bulk BH}$ and $T_{bndy BH}$ of the bulk and boundary black holes, and we may then take α= $T_\mathrm{bndy BH}/T_\mathrm{bulk BH}$ and ΔT small to control the accuracy of the fluid-gravity approximation. In the small α, ΔT regime we find excellent agreement with our numerical solutions. For our cases the agreement also remains quite good even for $α\sim 0.8$. In terms of a dual CFT, our α= 1 solutions describe heat transport via a large N version of Hawking radiation through a deconfined plasma that couples efficiently to both boundary black holes.

Boundary Conditions for Kerr-AdS Perturbations

The Teukolsky master equation and its associated spin-weighted spheroidal harmonic decomposition simplify considerably the study of linear gravitational perturbations of the Kerr(-AdS) black hole. However, the formulation of the problem is not complete before we assign the physically relevant boundary conditions. We find a set of two Robin boundary conditions (BCs) that must be imposed on the Teukolsky master variables to get perturbations that are asymptotically global AdS, i.e. that asymptotes to the Einstein Static Universe. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, these BCs allow a non-zero expectation value for the CFT stress-energy tensor while keeping fixed the boundary metric. When the rotation vanishes, we also find the gauge invariant differential map between the Teukolsky and the Kodama-Ishisbashi (Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli) formalisms. One of our Robin BCs maps to the scalar sector and the other to the vector sector of the Kodama-Ishisbashi decomposition. The Robin BCs on the Teukolsky variables will allow for a quantitative study of instability timescales and quasinormal mode spectrum of the Kerr-AdS black hole. As a warm-up for this programme, we use the Teukolsky formalism to recover the quasinormal mode spectrum of global AdS-Schwarzschild, complementing previous analysis in the literature.

General Relativity and the Cuprates

We add a periodic potential to the simplest gravitational model of a superconductor and compute the optical conductivity. In addition to a superfluid component, we find a normal component that has Drude behavior at low frequency followed by a power law fall-off. Both the exponent and coefficient of the power law are temperature independent and agree with earlier results computed above $T_c$. These results are in striking agreement with measurements on some cuprates. We also find a gap $Δ= 4.0\ T_c$, a rapidly decreasing scattering rate, and "missing spectral weight" at low frequency, all of which also agree with experiments.

Holographic thermalization, quasinormal modes and superradiance in Kerr-AdS

Black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS) backgrounds play a pivotal role in the gauge/gravity duality where they determine, among other things, the approach to equilibrium of the dual field theory. We undertake a detailed analysis of perturbed Kerr-AdS black holes in four- and five-dimensional spacetimes, including the computation of its quasinormal modes, hydrodynamic modes and superradiantly unstable modes. Our results shed light on the possibility of new black hole phases with a single Killing field, possible new holographic phenomena and phases in the presence of a rotating chemical potential, and close a crucial gap in our understanding of linearized perturbations of black holes in anti-de Sitter scenarios.

Non-Axisymmetric Instability of Rotating Black Holes in Higher Dimensions

We calculate the scalar-gravitational quasi-normal modes of equal angular momenta Myers-Perry black holes in odd dimensions. We find a new bar-mode (non-axisymmetric) classical instability for $D \ge 7$. These black holes were previously found to be unstable to axisymmetric perturbations for spins very near extremality. The bar-mode instability we find sets in at much slower spins, and is therefore the dominant instability of these black holes. This instability has important consequences for the phase diagram of black holes in higher dimensions.

Rotating Black Droplet

We construct the gravitational dual, in the Unruh state, of the "jammed" phase of a CFT at strong coupling and infinite N on a fixed five-dimensional rotating Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta. When the angular momenta are all zero, the solution corresponds to the five-dimensional generalization of the solution first studied by Figueras, Lucietti, and Wiseman. In the extremal limit, when the angular momenta of the Myers-Perry black hole are maximum, the Unruh, Boulware and Hartle-Hawking states degenerate. We give a detailed analysis of the corresponding holographic stress energy tensor for all values of the angular momenta, finding it to be regular at the horizon in all cases. We compare our results with existent literature on thermal states of free field theories on black hole backgrounds.

Black Funnels

The Hartle-Hawking state of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM at strong coupling and large $N$ on a fixed black hole background has two proposed gravitational duals: a black funnel or a black droplet. We construct the black funnel solutions that are dual to the Hartle-Hawking state on a Schwarzschild black hole and on a class of three-dimensional asymptotically flat black hole backgrounds. We compute their holographic stress tensor and argue for the stability of these solutions.

Further Evidence for Lattice-Induced Scaling

We continue our study of holographic transport in the presence of a background lattice. We recently found evidence that the presence of a lattice induces a new intermediate scaling regime in asymptotically $AdS_4$ spacetimes. This manifests itself in the optical conductivity which exhibits a robust power-law dependence on frequency, $σ\sim ω^{-2/3}$, in a "mid-infrared" regime, a result which is in striking agreement with experiments on the cuprates. Here we provide further evidence for the existence of this intermediate scaling regime. We demonstrate similar scaling in the thermoelectric conductivity, find analogous scalings in asymptotically $AdS_5$ spacetimes, and show that we get the same results with an ionic lattice.

Hairy black holes and solitons in global AdS 5

We use a mix of analytic and numerical methods to exhaustively study a class of asymptotically global AdS solitons and hairy black hole solutions in negative cosmological constant Einstein Maxwell gravity coupled to a charged massless scalar field. Our results depend sensitively on the charge 'e' of the scalar field. The solitonic branch of solutions we study hit the Chandrashekhar limit at finite mass at small 'e', but extends to arbitrarily large mass at larger 'e'. At low values of 'e' no hairy black holes exist. At intermediate values of 'e' hairy black holes exist above a critical charge. At large 'e' hairy black holes exist at all values of the charge. The lowest mass hairy black holes is a smooth zero entropy soliton at small charge, but a (probably) singular nonzero entropy hairy black hole at larger charge. In a phase diagram of solutions, the hairy black holes merge with the familiar Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes along a curve that is determined by the onset of the superradiant instability in the latter family.

Holographic Description of Finite Size Effects in Strongly Coupled Superconductors

Despite its fundamental and practical interest, the understanding of mesoscopic effects in strongly coupled superconductors is still limited. Here we address this problem by studying holographic superconductivity in a disk and a strip of typical size $\ell$. For $\ell < \ell_c$, where $\ell_c$ depends on the chemical potential and temperature, we have found that the order parameter vanishes. The superconductor-metal transition at $\ell = \ell_c$ is controlled by mean-field critical exponents which suggests that quantum and thermal fluctuations induced by finite size effects are suppressed in holographic superconductors. Intriguingly, the effective interactions that bind the order parameter increases as $\ell$ decreases. Most of these results are consistent with experimental observations in Pb nanograins at low temperature and qualitatively different from the ones expected in a weakly coupled superconductor.

Kerr-AdS and its Near-horizon Geometry: Perturbations and the Kerr/CFT Correspondence

We investigate linear perturbations of spin-s fields in the Kerr-AdS black hole and in its near-horizon geometry (NHEK-AdS), using the Teukolsky master equation and the Hertz potential. In the NHEK-AdS geometry we solve the associated angular equation numerically and the radial equation exactly. Having these explicit solutions at hand, we search for linear mode instabilities. We do not find any (non-)axisymmetric instabilities with outgoing boundary conditions. This is in agreement with a recent conjecture relating the linearized stability properties of the full geometry with those of its near-horizon geometry. Moreover, we find that the asymptotic behaviour of the metric perturbations in NHEK-AdS violates the fall-off conditions imposed in the formulation of the Kerr/CFT correspondence (the only exception being the axisymmetric sector of perturbations).

On the Nonlinear Stability of Asymptotically Anti-de Sitter Solutions

Despite the recent evidence that anti-de Sitter spacetime is nonlinearly unstable, we argue that many asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions are nonlinearly stable. This includes geons, boson stars, and black holes. As part of our argument, we calculate the frequencies of long-lived gravitational quasinormal modes of AdS black holes in various dimensions. We also discuss a new class of asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions describing noncoalescing black hole binaries.

Black funnels and droplets in thermal equilibrium

It has recently been proposed that the strong coupling behaviour of quantum field theories on a non-dynamical black hole background can be described, in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, by a competition between two gravity duals: a black funnel and a black droplet. We present here thermal equilibrium solutions which represent such spacetimes, providing the first example where the thermal competition between the gravity duals can be studied. The solutions correspond to a special family of charged AdS C-metrics. We compute the corresponding Euclidean actions and find that the black funnel always dominates the canonical ensemble in our example, meaning that the field theory does not undergo a phase transition.

Black holes with only one Killing field

We present the first examples of black holes with only one Killing field. The solutions describe five dimensional AdS black holes with scalar hair. The black holes are neither stationary nor axisymmetric, but are invariant under a single Killing field which is tangent to the null generators of the horizon. Some of these solutions can be viewed as putting black holes into rotating boson stars. Others are related to the endpoint of a superradiant instability. For given mass and angular momentum (within a certain range) several black hole solutions exist.

Gravitational Turbulent Instability of Anti-de Sitter Space

Bizon and Rostworowski have recently suggested that anti-de Sitter spacetime might be nonlinearly unstable to transfering energy to smaller and smaller scales and eventually forming a small black hole. We consider pure gravity with a negative cosmological constant and find strong support for this idea. While one can start with a single linearized mode and add higher order corrections to construct a nonlinear geon, this is not possible starting with a linear combination of two or more modes. One is forced to add higher frequency modes with growing amplitude. The implications of this turbulent instability for the dual field theory are discussed.

Ultraspinning instability of anti-de Sitter black holes

Myers-Perry black holes with a single spin in d>5 have been shown to be unstable if rotating sufficiently rapidly. We extend the numerical analysis which allowed for that result to the asymptotically AdS case. We determine numerically the stationary perturbations that mark the onset of the instabilities for the modes that preserve the rotational symmetries of the background. The parameter space of solutions is thoroughly analysed, and the onset of the instabilities is obtained as a function of the cosmological constant. Each of these perturbations has been conjectured to represent a bifurcation point to a new phase of stationary AdS black holes, and this is consistent with our results.

Ultraspinning instability: the missing link

We study linearized perturbations of Myers-Perry black holes in d=7, with two of the three angular momenta set to be equal, and show that instabilities always appear before extremality. Analogous results are expected for all higher odd d. We determine numerically the stationary perturbations that mark the onset of instability for the modes that preserve the isometries of the background. The onset is continuously connected between the previously studied sectors of solutions with a single angular momentum and solutions with all angular momenta equal. This shows that the near-extremality instabilities are of the same nature as the ultraspinning instability of d>5 singly-spinning solutions, for which the angular momentum is unbounded. Our results raise the question of whether there are any extremal Myers-Perry black holes which are stable in d>5.

A scalar field condensation instability of rotating anti-de Sitter black holes

Near-extreme Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black holes are unstable against the condensation of an uncharged scalar field with mass close to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. It is shown that a similar instability afflicts near-extreme large rotating AdS black holes, and near-extreme hyperbolic Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. The resulting nonlinear hairy black hole solutions are determined numerically. Some stability results for (possibly charged) scalar fields in black hole backgrounds are proved. For most of the extreme black holes we consider, these demonstrate stability if the ``effective mass" respects the near-horizon BF bound. Small spherical Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes are an interesting exception to this result.

An instability of higher-dimensional rotating black holes

We present the first example of a linearized gravitational instability of an asymptotically flat vacuum black hole. We study perturbations of a Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta in an odd number of dimensions. We find no evidence of any instability in five or seven dimensions, but in nine dimensions, for sufficiently rapid rotation, we find perturbations that grow exponentially in time. The onset of instability is associated with the appearance of time-independent perturbations which generically break all but one of the rotational symmetries. This is interpreted as evidence for the existence of a new 70-parameter family of black hole solutions with only a single rotational symmetry. We also present results for the Gregory-Laflamme instability of rotating black strings, demonstrating that rotation makes black strings more unstable.

On three-point correlation functions in the gauge/gravity duality

We study the effect of marginal and irrelevant deformations on the renormalization of operators near a CFT fixed point. New divergences in a given operator are determined by its OPE with the operator D that generates the deformation. This provides a scheme to compute the couplings a_DAB between the operator D and two arbitrary operators O_A and O_B. We exemplify for the case of N=4 SYM, considering the simplest case of the exact Lagrangian deformation. In this case the deformed anomalous dimension matrix is determined by the derivative of the anomalous dimension matrix with respect to the coupling. We use integrability techniques to compute the one-loop couplings a_LAB between the Lagrangian and two distinct large operators built with Magnons, in the SU(2) sector of the theory. Then we consider a_DAA at strong coupling, and show how to compute it using the gauge/gravity duality, when D is a chiral operator dual to any supergravity field and O_A is dual to a heavy string state. We exemplify for the Lagrangian and operators O_A dual to heavy string states, showing agreement with the prediction derived from the renormalization group arguments.

Semiclassical instabilities of Kerr-AdS black holes

We study the thermodynamic stability of the Kerr-AdS black hole from the perturbative corrections to the gravitational partition function. The line of critical stability is identified by the appearance of a negative mode of the Euclidean action that renders the partition function ill-defined. The eigenvalue problem, consisting of a system of three coupled partial differential equations for the metric perturbations, is solved numerically. The agreement with the standard condition of thermodynamic stability in the grand canonical ensemble is remarkable. The results illustrate the physical significance of gravitational partition functions for rotating spacetimes beyond the instanton approximation.

Ultraspinning instability of rotating black holes

Rapidly rotating Myers-Perry black holes in d>5 dimensions were conjectured to be unstable by Emparan and Myers. In a previous publication, we found numerically the onset of the axisymmetric ultraspinning instability in the singly-spinning Myers-Perry black hole in d=7,8,9. This threshold signals also a bifurcation to new branches of axisymmetric solutions with pinched horizons that are conjectured to connect to the black ring, black Saturn and other families in the phase diagram of stationary solutions. We firmly establish that this instability is also present in d=6 and in d=10,11. The boundary conditions of the perturbations are discussed in detail for the first time and we prove that they preserve the angular velocity and temperature of the original Myers-Perry black hole. This property is fundamental to establish a thermodynamic necessary condition for the existence of this instability in general rotating backgrounds. We also prove a previous claim that the ultraspinning modes cannot be pure gauge modes. Finally we find new ultraspinning Gregory-Laflamme instabilities of rotating black strings and branes that appear exactly at the critical rotation predicted by the aforementioned thermodynamic criterium. The latter is a refinement of the Gubser-Mitra conjecture.

Instability and new phases of higher-dimensional rotating black holes

It has been conjectured that higher-dimensional rotating black holes become unstable at a sufficiently large value of the rotation, and that new black holes with pinched horizons appear at the threshold of the instability. We search numerically, and find, the stationary axisymmetric perturbations of Myers-Perry black holes with a single spin that mark the onset of the instability and the appearance of the new black hole phases. We also find new ultraspinning Gregory-Laflamme instabilities of rotating black strings and branes.

Thermodynamic instability of rotating black holes

We show that the quasi-Euclidean sections of various rotating black holes in different dimensions possess at least one non-conformal negative mode when thermodynamic instabilities are expected. The boundary conditions of fixed induced metric correspond to the partition function of the grand-canonical ensemble. Indeed, in the asymptotically flat cases, we find that a negative mode persists even if the specific heat at constant angular momenta is positive, since the stability in this ensemble also requires the positivity of the isothermal momentum of inertia. We focus in particular on Kerr black holes, on Myers-Perry black holes in five and six dimensions, and on the Emparan-Reall black ring solution. We go on further to consider the richer case of the asymptotically AdS Kerr black hole in four dimensions, where thermodynamic stability is expected for a large enough cosmological constant. The results are consistent with previous findings in the non-rotation limit and support the use of quasi-Euclidean instantons to construct gravitational partition functions.
