Diluting a triangular-lattice spin liquid: Synthesis and characterization of NaYb$_{1-x}$Lu$_{x}$S$_2$ single crystals

Yb-based magnets, with a perfect triangular lattice of pseudospin-$1/2$ Yb$^{3+}$ ions, have emerged as candidates for realizing a quantum spin-liquid state, with NaYbS$_2$ being a prominent example. Here we present the solid-solution series NaYb$_{1-x}$Lu$_{x}$S$_2$ with well-defined single crystals over the entire substitution range $0\le x\le 1$. Chemical and structural analysis indicate a statistically homogeneous replacement of Yb$^{3+}$ by Lu$^{3+}$ ions. We magnetically characterize the relatively small single crystals using electron spin resonance (ESR). Below $30$K the ESR intensity can be well described by a Curie-Weiss function for all \textit{x}, with a decreasing Weiss temperature with increasing Lu content. This reduction of the average magnetic interaction upon Lu substitution is also supported by magnetization measurements. Importantly, no signs of magnetic or spin-glass order are detected down to $2$K for any $x$. For $x>0.5$ the ESR linewidth strongly increases, indicating the breakup of the magnetic system into disconnected clusters as expected from percolation physics. The experimental magnetization data are found to be in good agreement for all $x$ with results of classical Monte-Carlo simulations for a triangular-lattice Heisenberg model, amended with a small second-neighbor interaction. Taken together, our results establish NaYb$_{1-x}$Lu$_{x}$S$_2$ as a family of diluted triangular-lattice spin liquids.

Magneto-Optics of the Weyl Semimetal TaAs in the THz and IR Regions

The magnetic-field dependence of optical reflectivity [$R(ω)$] and optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra of the ideal type-I Weyl semimetal TaAs has been investigated at the temperature of 10 K in the terahertz (THz) and infrared (IR) regions. The obtained $σ(ω)$ spectrum in the THz region of $\hbarω\leq15$ meV is strongly affected by the applied magnetic field ($B$): The Drude spectral weight is rapidly suppressed and an energy gap originating from the optical transition in the lowest Landau levels appears with a gap size that increases in proportion to $\sqrt{B}$, which suggests linear band dispersions. The obtained THz $σ(ω)$ spectra could be scaled not only in the energy scale by $\sqrt{B}$ but also in the intensity by $1/\sqrt{B}$ as predicted theoretically. In the IR region for $\hbarω\geq17$ meV, on the other hand, the observed $R(ω)$ peaks originating from the optical transitions in higher Landau levels are proportional to linear-$B$ suggesting parabolic bands. The different band dispersions originate from the crossover from the Dirac to the free-electron bands.

Spectroscopic study of the magnetic ground state of Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$

We have investigated single crystals and polycrystals from the series Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$, $-0.004 \leq y \leq 0.018$ by electron spin resonance, muon spin relaxation and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Our data establish that at lowest temperatures all samples exhibit bulk magnetic order. Slight Fe-excess induces low-moment ferromagnetism, consistent with bulk magnetometry ($\simeq 0.06 ~μ_B/{\rm Fe}$), Nb--rich and stoichiometric NbFe$_2$ display spin density wave order with small magnetic moment amplitudes of the order $\sim 0.001 - 0.01 ~μ_B/{\rm Fe}$. This provides microscopic evidence for a modulated magnetic state on the border of ferromagnetism in NbFe$_2$.

Microwave spectroscopy on heavy-fermion systems: probing the dynamics of charges and magnetic moments

Investigating solids with light gives direct access to charge dynamics, electronic and magnetic excitations. For heavy fermions, one has to adjust the frequency of the probing light to the small characteristic energy scales, leading to spectroscopy with microwaves. We review general concepts of the frequency-dependent conductivity of heavy fermions, including the slow Drude relaxation and the transition to a superconducting state, which we also demonstrate with experimental data taken on UPd2Al3. We discuss the optical response of a Fermi liquid and how it might be observed in heavy fermions. Microwave studies with focus on quantum criticality in heavy fermions concern the charge response, but also the magnetic moments can be addressed via electron spin resonance (ESR). We discuss the case of YbRh2Si2, the open questions concerning ESR of heavy fermions, and how these might be addressed in the future. This includes an overview of the presently available experimental techniques for microwave studies on heavy fermions, with a focus on broadband studies using the Corbino approach and on planar superconducting resonators.

Frustrated couplings between alternating spin-1/2 chains in AgVOAsO4

We report on the crystal structure and magnetic behavior of the spin-1/2 compound AgVOAsO4. Magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, and electron spin resonance measurements identify AgVOAsO4 as a gapped quantum magnet with a spin gap Delta ~ 13 K and a saturation field H_s ~ 48.5 T. Extensive band structure calculations establish the microscopic magnetic model of spin chains with alternating exchange couplings J ~ 40 K and J' ~ 26 K. However, the precise evaluation of the spin gap emphasizes the role of interchain couplings which are frustrated due to the peculiar crystal structure of the compound. The unusual spin model and the low energy scale of the exchange couplings make AgVOAsO4 a promising candidate for an experimental investigation of Bose-Einstein condensation and other exotic ground states in high magnetic fields.
