Discrete approximation of the minimizing movement scheme for evolution equations of Wasserstein gradient flow type with nonlinear mobility

We propose a fully discrete variational scheme for nonlinear evolution equations with gradient flow structure on the space of finite Radon measures on an interval with respect to a generalized version of the Wasserstein distance with nonlinear mobility. Our scheme relies on a spatially discrete approximation of the semi-discrete (in time) minimizing movement scheme for gradient flows. Performing a finite-volume discretization of the continuity equation appearing in the definition of the distance, we obtain a finite-dimensional convex minimization problem usable as an iterative scheme. We prove that solutions to the spatially discrete minimization problem converge to solutions of the spatially continuous original minimizing movement scheme using the theory of $Γ$-convergence, and hence obtain convergence to a weak solution of the evolution equation in the continuous-time limit if the minimizing movement scheme converges. We illustrate our result with numerical simulations for several second- and fourth-order equations.

Existence of solutions for a class of fourth order cross-diffusion systems of gradient flow type

This article is concerned with the existence and the long time behavior of weak solutions to certain coupled systems of fourth-order degenerate parabolic equations of gradient flow type. The underlying metric is a Wasserstein-like transportation distance for vector-valued functions, with nonlinear mobilities in each component. Under the hypothesis of (flat) convexity of the driving free energy functional, weak solutions are constructed by means of the variational minimizing movement scheme for metric gradient flows. The essential regularity estimates are derived by variational methods.

High-frequency limit of non-autonomous gradient flows

We study the high-frequency limit of non-autonomous gradient flows in metric spaces of energy functionals comprising an explicitly time-dependent perturbation term which might oscillate in a rapid way, but fulfills a certain Lipschitz condition. On grounds of the existence results by Ferreira and Guevara (2015) on non-autonomous gradient flows (which we also extend to the framework of geodesically non-convex energies), we prove that the associated solution curves converge to a solution of the time-averaged evolution equation in the limit of infinite frequency. Under the additional assumption of dynamical geodesic $λ$-convexity of the energy, we obtain an explicit rate of convergence. In the non-convex case, we specifically investigate nonlinear drift-diffusion equations with time-dependent drift which are gradient flows with respect to the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance. We prove that a family of weak solutions obtained as a limit of the Minimizing Movement scheme exhibits the above-mentioned behaviour in the high-frequency limit.

The gradient flow of a generalized Fisher information functional with respect to modified Wasserstein distances

This article is concerned with the existence of nonnegative weak solutions to a particular fourth-order partial differential equation: it is a formal gradient flow with respect to a generalized Wasserstein transportation distance with nonlinear mobility. The corresponding free energy functional is referred to as generalized Fisher information functional since it is obtained by autodissipation of another energy functional which generates the heat flow as its gradient flow with respect to the aforementioned distance. Our main results are twofold: For mobility functions satisfying a certain regularity condition, we show the existence of weak solutions by construction with the well-known minimizing movement scheme for gradient flows. Furthermore, we extend these results to a more general class of mobility functions: a weak solution can be obtained by approximation with weak solutions of the problem with regularized mobility.

Well-posedness of evolution equations with time-dependent nonlinear mobility: a modified minimizing movement scheme

We prove the existence of nonnegative weak solutions to a class of second and fourth order nonautonomous nonlinear evolution equations with an explicitly time-dependent mobility function posed on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$, for arbitrary $d\ge 1$. Exploiting a very formal gradient flow structure, the cornerstone of our proof is a modified version of the classical minimizing movement scheme for gradient flows. The mobility function is required to satisfy - at each time point separately - the conditions by which one can define a modified Wasserstein distance on the space of probability densities with finite second moment. The explicit dependency on the time variable is assumed to be at least of Lipschitz regularity. We also sketch possible extensions of our result to the case of bounded spatial domains and more general mobility functions.

A note on the variational analysis of the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system in one spatial dimension

We prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions to a version of the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system in one spatial dimension. If the coupling of the system is suitably weak, we prove convergence of those solutions to the unique equilibrium with an exponential rate. Our proofs are based on an underlying gradient flow structure with respect to a mixed Wasserstein-$L^2$ distance.

Existence of weak solutions to a class of fourth order partial differential equations with Wasserstein gradient structure

We prove the global-in-time existence of nonnegative weak solutions to a class of fourth order partial differential equations on a convex bounded domain in arbitrary spatial dimensions. Our proof relies on the formal gradient flow structure of the equation with respect to the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance on the space of probability measures. We construct a weak solution by approximation via the time-discrete minimizing movement scheme; necessary compactness estimates are derived by entropy-dissipation methods. Our theory essentially comprises the thin film and Derrida-Lebowitz-Speer-Spohn equations.

Exponential convergence to equilibrium in a Poisson-Nernst-Planck-type system with nonlinear diffusion

We investigate a Poisson-Nernst-Planck type system in three spatial dimensions where the strength of the electric drift depends on a possibly small parameter and the particles are assumed to diffuse quadratically. On grounds of the global existence result proved by Kinderlehrer, Monsaingeon and Xu (2015) using the formal Wasserstein gradient flow structure of the system, we analyse the long-time behaviour of weak solutions. We prove under the assumption of uniform convexity of the external drift potentials that the system possesses a unique steady state. If the strength of the electric drift is sufficiently small, we show convergence of solutions to the respective steady state at an exponential rate using entropy-dissipation methods.

Geodesically convex energies and confinement of solutions for a multi-component system of nonlocal interaction equations

We consider a system of $n$ nonlocal interaction evolution equations on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a differentiable matrix-valued interaction potential $W$. Under suitable conditions on convexity, symmetry and growth of $W$, we prove $λ$-geodesic convexity for some $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ of the associated interaction energy with respect to a weighted compound distance of Wasserstein type. In particular, this implies existence and uniqueness of solutions to the evolution system. In one spatial dimension, we further analyse the qualitative properties of this solution in the non-uniformly convex case. We obtain, if the interaction potential is sufficiently convex far away from the origin, that the support of the solution is uniformly bounded. Under a suitable Lipschitz condition for the potential, we can exclude finite-time blow-up and give a partial characterization of the long-time behaviour.

Exponential convergence to equilibrium in a coupled gradient flow system modelling chemotaxis

We study a system of two coupled nonlinear parabolic equations. It constitutes a variant of the Keller-Segel model for chemotaxis, i.e. it models the behaviour of a population of bacteria that interact by means of a signalling substance. We assume an external confinement for the bacteria and a nonlinear dependency of the chemotactic drift on the signalling substance concentration. We perform an analysis of existence and long-time behaviour of solutions based on the underlying gradient flow structure of the system. The result is that, for a wide class of initial conditions, weak solutions exist globally in time and converge exponentially fast to the unique stationary state under suitable assumptions on the convexity of the confinement and the strength of the coupling.

Transport distances and geodesic convexity for systems of degenerate diffusion equations

We introduce Wasserstein-like dynamical transport distances between vector-valued densities on the real line. The mobility function from the scalar theory is replaced by a mobility matrix, that is subject to positivity and concavity conditions. Our primary motivation is to cast certain systems of nonlinear parabolic evolution equations into the variational framework of gradient flows. In the first part of the paper, we investigate the structural properties of the new class of distances like geodesic completeness. The second part is devoted to the identification of $λ$-geodesically convex functionals and their $λ$-contractive gradient flows. One of our results is a generalized McCann condition for geodesic convexity of the internal energy. In the third part, the existence of weak solutions to a certain class of degenerate diffusion systems with drift is shown. Even if the underlying energy function is not geodesically convex w.r.t. our new distance, the construction of a weak solution is still possible using de Giorgi's minimizing movement scheme.
