On the Complex Asymptotics of the HCIZ and BGW Integrals

In this paper, we prove a longstanding conjecture on the asymptotic behavior of a pair of oscillatory matrix integrals: the Harish-Chandra/Itzykson-Zuber (HCIZ) integral, and the Brezin-Gross-Witten (BGW) integral. The main result gives a complete asymptotic expansion of these integrals for small complex parameters. The coefficients of these asymptotic expansions are generating functions for monotone Hurwitz numbers sorted by genus.

On the convergence of monotone Hurwitz generating functions

Monotone Hurwitz numbers were introduced by the authors as a combinatorially natural desymmetrization of the Hurwitz numbers studied in enumerative algebraic geometry. Over the course of several papers, we developed the structural theory of monotone Hurwitz numbers and demonstrated that it is in many ways parallel to that of their classical counterparts. In this note, we identify an important difference between the monotone and classical worlds: fixed-genus generating functions for monotone double Hurwitz numbers are absolutely summable, whereas those for classical double Hurwitz numbers are not. This property is crucial for applications of monotone Hurwitz theory in analysis. We quantify the growth rate of monotone Hurwitz numbers in fixed genus by giving universal upper and lower bounds on the radii of convergence of their generating functions.

Toda Equations and Piecewise Polynomiality for Mixed Double Hurwitz Numbers

This article introduces mixed double Hurwitz numbers, which interpolate combinatorially between the classical double Hurwitz numbers studied by Okounkov and the monotone double Hurwitz numbers introduced recently by Goulden, Guay-Paquet and Novak. Generalizing a result of Okounkov, we prove that a certain generating series for the mixed double Hurwitz numbers solves the 2-Toda hierarchy of partial differential equations. We also prove that the mixed double Hurwitz numbers are piecewise polynomial, thereby generalizing a result of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil.

Asymptotics of unitary multimatrix models: The Schwinger-Dyson lattice and topological recursion

We prove the existence of a 1/N expansion in unitary multimatrix models which are Gibbs perturbations of the Haar measure, and express the expansion coefficients recursively in terms of the unique solution of a noncommutative initial value problem. The recursion obtained is closely related to the "topological recursion" which underlies the asymptotics of many random matrix ensembles and appears in diverse enumerative geometry problems, but has not previously appeared in the context of random unitary matrices. Our approach consists of two main ingredients: an asymptotic study of the Schwinger-Dyson lattice over noncommutative Laurent polynomials, and uniform control on the cumulants of Gibbs measures on product unitary groups. The required cumulant bounds are obtained by concentration of measure arguments.

Lozenge tilings and Hurwitz numbers

We give a new proof of the fact that, near a turning point of the frozen boundary, the vertical tiles in a uniformly random lozenge tiling of a large sawtooth domain are distributed like the eigenvalues of a GUE random matrix. Our argument uses none of the standard tools of integrable probability. In their place, it uses a combinatorial interpretation of the Harish-Chandra/Itzykson-Zuber integral as a generating function for desymmetrized Hurwitz numbers.

Jucys-Murphy Elements and Unitary Matrix Integrals

In this paper, we study the relationship between polynomial integrals on the unitary group and the conjugacy class expansion of symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements. Our main result is an explicit formula for the top coefficients in the class expansion of monomial symmetric functions in Jucys-Murphy elements, from which we recover the first order asymptotics of polynomial integrals over $\U(N)$ as $N \rightarrow \infty$. Our results on class expansion include an analogue of Macdonald's result for the top connection coefficients of the class algebra, a generalization of Stanley and Olshanski's result on the polynomiality of content statistics on Plancherel-random partitions, and an exact formula for the multiplicity of the class of full cycles in the expansion of a complete symmetric function in Jucys-Murphy elements. The latter leads to a new combinatorial interpretation of the Carlitz-Riordan central factorial numbers.

Polynomiality of monotone Hurwitz numbers in higher genera

Hurwitz numbers count branched covers of the Riemann sphere with specified ramification, or equivalently, transitive permutation factorizations in the symmetric group with specified cycle types. Monotone Hurwitz numbers count a restricted subset of these branched covers, related to the expansion of complete symmetric functions in the Jucys-Murphy elements, and have arisen in recent work on the the asymptotic expansion of the Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral. In previous work we gave an explicit formula for monotone Hurwitz numbers in genus zero. In this paper we consider monotone Hurwitz numbers in higher genera, and prove a number of results that are reminiscent of those for classical Hurwitz numbers. These include an explicit formula for monotone Hurwitz numbers in genus one, and an explicit form for the generating function in arbitrary positive genus. From the form of the generating function we are able to prove that monotone Hurwitz numbers exhibit a polynomiality that is reminiscent of that for the classical Hurwitz numbers, i.e., up to a specified combinatorial factor, the monotone Hurwitz number in genus g with ramification specified by a given partition is a polynomial indexed by g in the parts of the partition.

Three lectures on free probability

These are notes from a three-lecture mini-course on free probability given at MSRI in the Fall of 2010 and repeated a year later at Harvard. The lectures were aimed at mathematicians and mathematical physicists working in combinatorics, probability, and random matrix theory. The first lecture was a staged rediscovery of free independence from first principles, the second dealt with the additive calculus of free random variables, and the third focused on random matrix models.

Monotone Hurwitz numbers and the HCIZ integral II

Motivated by results for the HCIZ integral in Part I of this paper, we study the structure of monotone Hurwitz numbers, which are a desymmetrized version of classical Hurwitz numbers. We prove a number of results for monotone Hurwitz numbers and their generating series that are striking analogues of known results for the classical Hurwtiz numbers. These include explicit formulas for monotone Hurwitz numbers in genus 0 and 1, for all partitions, and an explicit rational form for the generating series in arbitrary genus. This rational form implies that, up to an explicit combinatorial scaling, monotone Hurwitz numbers are polynomial in the parts of the partition.

Primitive factorizations, Jucys-Murphy elements, and matrix models

A factorization of a permutation into transpositions is called "primitive" if its factors are weakly ordered. We discuss the problem of enumerating primitive factorizations of permutations, and its place in the hierarchy of previously studied factorization problems. Several formulas enumerating minimal primitive and possibly non-minimal primitive factorizations are presented, and interesting connections with Jucys-Murphy elements, symmetric group characters, and matrix models are described.
