Ladder determinantal varieties and their symbolic blowups

In this article we show that the symbolic Rees algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is strongly $F$-regular. Furthermore, we prove that the symbolic associated graded algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is $F$-pure. The latter implies that mixed ladder determinantal rings are $F$-pure. We also show that ideals of the poset of minors of a generic matrix give rise to $F$-pure algebras with straightening law.

Quasipolynomial behavior via constructibility in multigraded algebra

Piecewise quasipolynomial growth of Presburger counting functions combines with tame persistent homology module theory to conclude piecewise quasipolynomial behavior of constructible families of finely graded modules over constructible commutative semigroup rings. Functorial preservation of constructibility for families under local cohomology, $\operatorname{Tor}$, and $\operatorname{Ext}$ yield piecewise quasipolynomial, quasilinear, or quasiconstant growth statements for length of local cohomology, $a$-invariants, regularity, depth; length of $\operatorname{Tor}$ and Betti numbers; length of $\operatorname{Ext}$ and Bass numbers; associated primes via $v$-invariants; and extended degrees, including the usual degree, Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity, arithmetic degree, and homological degree.

Frobenius methods in combinatorics

We survey results produced from the interaction between methods in prime characteristic and combinatorial commutative algebra. We showcase results for edge ideals, toric varieties, Stanley-Reisner rings, and initial ideals that were proven via Frobenius. We also discuss results for monomial ideals obtained using Frobenius-like maps. Finally, we present results for $F$-pure rings that were inspired by work done for Stanley-Reisner rings.

Extremal growth of Betti numbers and trivial vanishing of (co)homology

A Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$ satisfies trivial vanishing if $\operatorname{Tor}_i^R(M,N)=0$ for all large $i$ implies $M$ or $N$ has finite projective dimension. If $R$ satisfies trivial vanishing then we also have that $\operatorname{Ext}^i_R(M,N)=0$ for all large $i$ implies $M$ has finite projective dimension or $N$ has finite injective dimension. In this paper, we establish obstructions for the failure of trivial vanishing in terms of the asymptotic growth of the Betti and Bass numbers of the modules involved. These, together with a result of Gasharov and Peeva, provide sufficient conditions for $R$ to satisfy trivial vanishing; we provide sharpened conditions when $R$ is generalized Golod. Our methods allow us to settle the Auslander-Reiten conjecture in several new cases. In the last part of the paper, we provide criteria for the Gorenstein property based on consecutive vanishing of Ext. The latter results improve similar statements due to Ulrich, Hanes-Huneke, and Jorgensen-Leuschke.

When are multidegrees positive?

Let $k$ be an arbitrary field, $P = P_k^{m_1} \times_k \cdots \times_k P_k^{m_p}$ be a multiprojective space over $k$, and $X \subseteq P$ be a closed subscheme of $P$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the positivity of the multidegrees of $X$. As a consequence of our methods, we show that when $X$ is irreducible, the support of multidegrees forms a discrete algebraic polymatroid. In algebraic terms, we characterize the positivity of the mixed multiplicities of a standard multigraded algebra over an Artinian local ring, and we apply this to the positivity of mixed multiplicities of ideals. Furthermore, we use our results to recover several results in the literature in the context of combinatorial algebraic geometry.

Edge ideals and DG algebra resolutions

Let $R= S/I$ where $S=k[T_1, \ldots, T_n]$ and $I$ is a homogeneous ideal in $S$. The acyclic closure $R \langle Y \rangle $ of $k$ over $R$ is a DG algebra resolution obtained by means of Tate's process of adjoining variables to kill cycles. In a similar way one can obtain the minimal model $S[X]$, a DG algebra resolution of $R$ over $S$. By a theorem of Avramov there is a tight connection between these two resolutions. In this paper we study these two resolutions when $I$ is the edge ideal of a path or a cycle. We determine the behavior of the deviations $\varepsilon_i(R)$, which are the number of variables in $R\langle Y \rangle$ in homological degree $i$. We apply our results to the study of the $k$-algebra structure of the Koszul homology of $R$.

Artin-Nagata properties, minimal multiplicities, and depth of fiber cones

Minimal values of multiplicities of ideals have a strong relation with the depth of blowup algebras. In this paper, we introduce the notion of Goto-minimal $j$-multiplicity for ideals of maximal analytic spread. In a Cohen-Macaulay ring, inspired by the work of S. Goto, A. Jayanthan, T. Puthenpurakal, and J. Verma, we study the interplay among this new notion, the notion of minimal $j$-multiplicity introduced by C. Polini and Y. Xie, and the Cohen-Macaulayness of the fiber cone of ideals satisfying certain residual assumptions. We are also able to provide a bound on the reduction number of ideals of Goto-minimal $j$-multiplicity having either Cohen-Macaulay associated graded algebra, or linear decay in the depth of their powers.

Multiplicities of Classical Varieties

The $j$-multiplicity plays an important role in the intersection theory of Stückrad-Vogel cycles, while recent developments confirm the connections between the $ε$-multiplicity and equisingularity theory. In this paper we establish, under some constraints, a relationship between the $j$-multiplicity of an ideal and the degree of its fiber cone. As a consequence, we are able to compute the $j$-multiplicity of all the ideals defining rational normal scrolls. By using the standard monomial theory, we can also compute the $j$- and $ε$-multiplicity of ideals defining determinantal varieties: The found quantities are integrals which, quite surprisingly, are central in random matrix theory.
