On the geometry and topology of representations: the manifolds of modular addition

The Clock and Pizza interpretations, associated with architectures differing in either uniform or learnable attention, were introduced to argue that different architectural designs can yield distinct circuits for modular addition. In this work, we show that this is not the case, and that both uniform attention and trainable attention architectures implement the same algorithm via topologically and geometrically equivalent representations. Our methodology goes beyond the interpretation of individual neurons and weights. Instead, we identify all of the neurons corresponding to each learned representation and then study the collective group of neurons as one entity. This method reveals that each learned representation is a manifold that we can study utilizing tools from topology. Based on this insight, we can statistically analyze the learned representations across hundreds of circuits to demonstrate the similarity between learned modular addition circuits that arise naturally from common deep learning paradigms.

An arithmetic variant of Raynaud's theorem

It is well known that for a regular semistable curve $\mathfrak X$ over a DVR with algebraically closed residue field, the spanning trees of the dual graph of the special fiber of $\mathfrak X$ are in bijection with components of the special fiber of the Néron model of the Jacobian of $\mathfrak X$. We prove a generalization of this fact that does not require the residue field to be algebraically closed, using a combinatorially enriched version of the dual graph to encode arithmetic information about divisors on $\mathfrak X$.

Rational Equivalences on Products of Elliptic Curves in a Family

Given a pair of elliptic curves $E_1,E_2$ over a field $k$, we have a natural map $\text{CH}^1(E_1)_0\otimes\text{CH}^1(E_2)_0\to\text{CH}^2(E_1\times E_2)$, and a conjecture due to Beilinson predicts that the image of this map is finite when $k$ is a number field. We construct a $2$-parameter family of elliptic curves that can be used to produce examples of pairs $E_1,E_2$ where this image is finite. The family is constructed to guarantee the existence of a rational curve passing through a specified point in the Kummer surface of $E_1\times E_2$.

Supersingular Curves With Small Non-integer Endomorphisms

We introduce a special class of supersingular curves over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$, characterized by the existence of non-integer endomorphisms of small degree. A number of properties of this set is proved. Most notably, we show that when this set partitions into subsets in such a way that curves within each subset have small-degree isogenies between them, but curves in distinct subsets have no small-degree isogenies between them. Despite this, we show that isogenies between these curves can be computed efficiently, giving a technique for computing isogenies between certain prescribed curves that cannot be reasonably connected by searching on $\ell$-isogeny graphs.
