Trace formulas and continuous dependence of spectra for the periodic conservative Camassa-Holm flow

This article is concerned with the isospectral problem \[ -f'' + \frac{1}{4} f = zωf + z^2 \upsilon f \] for the periodic conservative Camassa-Holm flow, where $ω$ is a periodic real distribution in $H^{-1}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\upsilon$ is a periodic non-negative Borel measure on $\mathbb{R}$. We develop basic Floquet theory for this problem, derive trace formulas for the associated spectra and establish continuous dependence of these spectra on the coefficients with respect to a weak$^\ast$ topology.

A coupling problem for entire functions and its application to the long-time asymptotics of integrable wave equations

We propose a novel technique for analyzing the long-time asymptotics of integrable wave equations in the case when the underlying isospectral problem has purely discrete spectrum. To this end, we introduce a natural coupling problem for entire functions, which serves as a replacement for the usual Riemann-Hilbert problem, which does not apply in these cases. As a prototypical example, we investigate the long-time asymptotics of the dispersionless Camassa-Holm equation.

An inverse spectral problem for a star graph of Krein strings

We solve an inverse spectral problem for a star graph of Krein strings, where the known spectral data comprises the spectrum associated with the whole graph, the spectra associated with the individual edges as well as so-called coupling matrices. In particular, we show that these spectral quantities uniquely determine the weight within the class of Borel measures on the graph, which give rise to trace class resolvents. Furthermore, we obtain a concise characterization of all possible spectral data for this class of weights.

The inverse spectral problem for indefinite strings

Motivated by the study of certain nonlinear wave equations (in particular, the Camassa-Holm equation), we introduce a new class of generalized indefinite strings associated with differential equations of the form \[-u"=z\,u\,ω+z^2u\,\upsilon\] on an interval $[0,L)$, where $ω$ is a real-valued distribution in $H^{-1}_{\mathrm{loc}}[0,L)$, $\upsilon$ is a non-negative Borel measure on $[0,L)$ and $z$ is a complex spectral parameter. Apart from developing basic spectral theory for these kinds of spectral problems, our main result is an indefinite analogue of M. G. Krein's celebrated solution of the inverse spectral problem for inhomogeneous vibrating strings.

On Spectral Deformations and Singular Weyl Functions for One-Dimensional Dirac Operators

We investigate the connection between singular Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory and the double commutation method for one-dimensional Dirac operators. In particular, we compute the singular Weyl function of the commuted operator in terms of the data from the original operator. These results are then applied to radial Dirac operators in order to show that the singular Weyl function of such an operator belongs to a generalized Nevanlinna class $N_{κ_0}$ with $κ_0=\lfloor|κ| + \frac{1}{2}\rfloor$, where $κ\in \mathbb{R}$ is the corresponding angular momentum.

Supersymmetry and Schrödinger-type operators with distributional matrix-valued potentials

Building on work on Miura's transformation by Kappeler, Perry, Shubin, and Topalov, we develop a detailed spectral theoretic treatment of Schrödinger operators with matrix-valued potentials, with special emphasis on distributional potential coefficients. Our principal method relies on a supersymmetric (factorization) formalism underlying Miura's transformation, which intimately connects the triple of operators $(D, H_1, H_2)$ of the form [D= (0 & A^*, A & 0) \text{in} L^2(\mathbb{R})^{2m} \text{and} H_1 = A^* A, H_2 = A A^* \text{in} L^2(\mathbb{R})^m.] Here $A= I_m (d/dx) + ϕ$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R})^m$, with a matrix-valued coefficient $ϕ= ϕ^* \in L^1_{\text{loc}}(\mathbb{R})^{m \times m}$, $m \in \mathbb{N}$, thus explicitly permitting distributional potential coefficients $V_j$ in $H_j$, $j=1,2$, where [H_j = - I_m \frac{d^2}{dx^2} + V_j(x), \quad V_j(x) = ϕ(x)^2 + (-1)^{j} ϕ'(x), j=1,2.] Upon developing Weyl--Titchmarsh theory for these generalized Schrödinger operators $H_j$, with (possibly, distributional) matrix-valued potentials $V_j$, we provide some spectral theoretic applications, including a derivation of the corresponding spectral representations for $H_j$, $j=1,2$. Finally, we derive a local Borg--Marchenko uniqueness theorem for $H_j$, $j=1,2$, by employing the underlying supersymmetric structure and reducing it to the known local Borg--Marchenko uniqueness theorem for $D$.

An isospectral problem for global conservative multi-peakon solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation

We introduce a generalized isospectral problem for global conservative multi-peakon solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. Utilizing the solution of the indefinite moment problem given by M. G. Krein and H. Langer, we show that the conservative Camassa-Holm equation is integrable by the inverse spectral transform in the multi-peakon case.

Inverse uniqueness results for one-dimensional weighted Dirac operators

Given a one-dimensional weighted Dirac operator we can define a spectral measure by virtue of singular Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory. Using the theory of de Branges spaces we show that the spectral measure uniquely determines the Dirac operator up to a gauge transformation. Our result applies in particular to radial Dirac operators and extends the classical results for Dirac operators with one regular endpoint. Moreover, our result also improves the currently known results for canonical (Hamiltonian) systems. If one endpoint is limit circle case, we also establish corresponding two-spectra results.

One-dimensional Schroedinger operators with delta-prime-interactions on Cantor-type sets

We introduce a novel approach for defining a $δ'$-interaction on a subset of the real line of Lebesgue measure zero which is based on Sturm-Liouville differential expression with measure coefficients. This enables us to establish basic spectral properties (e.g., self-adjointness, lower semiboundedness and spectral asymptotics) of Hamiltonians with $δ'$-interactions concentrated on sets of complicated structures.

Two inverse spectral problems for a class of singular Krein strings

We solve the inverse problem from the spectral measure and the inverse three-spectra problem for the class of singular Krein strings on a finite interval with trace class resolvents. In particular, this includes a complete description of all possible spectral measures and three (Dirichlet) spectra associated with this class of Krein strings. The solutions of these inverse problems are obtained by approximation with Stieltjes strings.

Inverse Spectral Theory for Sturm-Liouville Operators with Distributional Potentials

We discuss inverse spectral theory for singular differential operators on arbitrary intervals $(a,b) \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ associated with rather general differential expressions of the type \[τf = \frac{1}{r} \left(- \big(p[f' + s f]\big)' + s p[f' + s f] + qf\right), \] where the coefficients $p$, $q$, $r$, $s$ are Lebesgue measurable on $(a,b)$ with $p^{-1}$, $q$, $r$, $s \in L^1_{\text{loc}}((a,b); dx)$ and real-valued with $p\not=0$ and $r>0$ a.e.\ on $(a,b)$. In particular, we explicitly permit certain distributional potential coefficients. The inverse spectral theory results derived in this paper include those implied by the spectral measure, by two-spectra and three-spectra, as well as local Borg-Marchenko-type inverse spectral results. The special cases of Schrödinger operators with distributional potentials and Sturm--Liouville operators in impedance form are isolated, in particular.

On the isospectral problem of the dispersionless Camassa-Holm equation

We discuss direct and inverse spectral theory for the isospectral problem of the dispersionless Camassa--Holm equation, where the weight is allowed to be a finite signed measure. In particular, we prove that this weight is uniquely determined by the spectral data and solve the inverse spectral problem for the class of measures which are sign definite. The results are applied to deduce several facts for the dispersionless Camassa--Holm equation. In particular, we show that initial conditions with integrable momentum asymptotically split into a sum of peakons as conjectured by McKean.

Sturm-Liouville operators with measure-valued coefficients

We give a comprehensive treatment of Sturm-Liouville operators with measure-valued coefficients including, a full discussion of self-adjoint extensions and boundary conditions, resolvents, and Weyl-Titchmarsh theory. We avoid previous technical restrictions and, at the same time, extend all results to a larger class of operators. Our operators include classical Sturm-Liouville operators, Lax operators arising in the treatment of the Camassa-Holm equation, Jacobi operators, and Sturm-Liouville operators on time scales as special cases.

Uniqueness Results for Schroedinger Operators on the Line with Purely Discrete Spectra

We provide an abstract framework for singular one-dimensional Schroedinger operators with purely discrete spectra to show when the spectrum plus norming constants determine such an operator completely. As an example we apply our findings to prove a new uniqueness results for perturbed quantum mechanical harmonic oscillators. In addition, we also show how to establish a Hochstadt-Liebermann type result for these operators. Our approach is based on the singular Weyl-Titchmarsh theory which is extended to cover the present situation.

Weyl-Titchmarsh Theory for Sturm-Liouville Operators with Distributional Potentials

We systematically develop Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for singular differential operators on arbitrary intervals $(a,b) \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ associated with rather general differential expressions of the type \[ τf = \frac{1}{r} (- \big(p[f' + s f]\big)' + s p[f' + s f] + qf),] where the coefficients $p$, $q$, $r$, $s$ are real-valued and Lebesgue measurable on $(a,b)$, with $p\neq 0$, $r>0$ a.e.\ on $(a,b)$, and $p^{-1}$, $q$, $r$, $s \in L^1_{\text{loc}}((a,b); dx)$, and $f$ is supposed to satisfy [f \in AC_{\text{loc}}((a,b)), \; p[f' + s f] \in AC_{\text{loc}}((a,b)).] In particular, this setup implies that $τ$ permits a distributional potential coefficient, including potentials in $H^{-1}_{\text{loc}}((a,b))$. We study maximal and minimal Sturm-Liouville operators, all self-adjoint restrictions of the maximal operator $T_{\text{max}}$, or equivalently, all self-adjoint extensions of the minimal operator $T_{\text{min}}$, all self-adjoint boundary conditions (separated and coupled ones), and describe the resolvent of any self-adjoint extension of $T_{\text{min}}$. In addition, we characterize the principal object of this paper, the singular Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira $m$-function corresponding to any self-adjoint extension with separated boundary conditions and derive the corresponding spectral transformation, including a characterization of spectral multiplicities and minimal supports of standard subsets of the spectrum. We also deal with principal solutions and characterize the Friedrichs extension of $T_{\text{min}}$. Finally, in the special case where $τ$ is regular, we characterize the Krein-von Neumann extension of $T_{\text{min}}$ and also characterize all boundary conditions that lead to positivity preserving, equivalently, improving, resolvents (and hence semigroups).

Direct and inverse spectral theory of singular left-definite Sturm-Liouville operators

We discuss direct and inverse spectral theory of self-adjoint Sturm-Liouville relations with separated boundary conditions in the left-definite setting. In particular, we develop singular Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for these relations. Consequently, we apply de Branges' subspace ordering theorem to obtain inverse uniqueness results for the associated spectral measure. The results can be applied to solve the inverse spectral problem associated with the Camassa-Holm equation.
