Gaussian State-Based Quantum Illumination with Simple Photodetection

Proofs of the quantum advantage available in imaging or detecting objects under quantum illumination can rely on optimal measurements without specifying what they are. We use the continuous-variable Gaussian quantum information formalism to show that quantum illumination is better for object detection compared with coherent states of the same mean photon number, even for simple direct photodetection. The advantage persists if signal energy and object reflectivity are low and background thermal noise is high. The advantage is even greater if we match signal beam detection probabilities rather than mean photon number. We perform all calculations with thermal states, even for non-Gaussian conditioned states with negative Wigner functions. We simulate repeated detection using a Monte Carlo process that clearly shows the advantages obtainable.

Strong coupling and active cooling in a finite temperature hybrid atom-cavity system

For a standard two-level atom coupled to the quantized field of a resonant cavity, finite temperature effects lead to thermal occupation of the cavity modes that obfuscates measurement of the quantum nature of the atom-light interaction. In this paper we demonstrate that using a hybrid system of a superconducting cavity coupled to a multi-level Rydberg atom it is possible to observe the quantum nature of strong coupling even at finite temperatures, and to exploit this coupling to permit cooling of the thermal microwave mode towards the ground-state, enabling observation of coherent vacuum Rabi oscillations even at 4~K for realistic experimental parameters. Cooling for multiple atoms is also explored, showing maximal cooling for small samples, making this a viable approach to cavity cooling with potential applications in long-range coupling of superconducting qubits via thermal waveguides.

Fractional photon-assisted tunnelling of ultra-cold atoms in periodically shaken double-well lattices

Fractional photon-assisted tunnelling is investigated both numerically and analytically in a double-well lattice. While integer photon-assisted tunnelling is a single-particle effect, fractional photon-assisted tunnelling is an interaction-induced many-body effect. Double-well lattices with few particles in each double well are ideal to study this effect far from the mean-field effects. It is predicted that the 1/4-resonance is observable in such systems. Fractional photon-assisted tunnelling provides a physically relevant model for which N-th order time-dependent perturbation theory can be large although all previous orders are small.
