A nonrelativistic quantum field theory with point interactions in three dimensions

We construct a Hamiltonian for a quantum-mechanical model of nonrelativistic particles in three dimensions interacting via the creation and annihilation of a second type of nonrelativistic particles, which are bosons. The interaction between the two types of particles is a point interaction concentrated on the points in configuration space where the positions of two different particles coincide. We define the operator, and its domain of self-adjointness, in terms of co-dimension-three boundary conditions on the set of collision configurations relating sectors with different numbers of particles.

Coulomb potentials and Taylor expansions in Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

We investigate when Taylor expansions can be used to prove the Runge-Gross Theorem, which is at the foundation of Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT). We start with a general analysis of the conditions for the Runge-Gross argument, especially the time-differentiability of the density. The latter should be questioned in the presence of singular (e.g. Coulomb) potentials. Then, we show that a singular potential in a one-body operator considerably decreases the class of time-dependent external potentials to which the original argument can be applied. A two-body singularity has an even stronger impact and an external potential is essentially incompatible with it. For the Coulomb interaction and all reasonable initial many-body states, the Taylor expansion only exists to a finite order, except for constant external potentials. Therefore, high-order Taylor expansions are not the right tool to study atoms and molecules in TDDFT.

Semi-classical Dirac vacuum polarisation in a scalar field

We study vacuum polarisation effects of a Dirac field coupled to an external scalar field and derive a semi-classical expansion of the regu-larised vacuum energy. The leading order of this expansion is given by a classical formula due to Chin, Lee-Wick and Walecka, for which our result provides the first rigorous proof. We then discuss applications to the non-relativistic large-coupling limit of an interacting system, and to the stability of homogeneous systems.

A many-body RAGE theorem

We prove a generalized version of the RAGE theorem for N-body quantum systems. The result states that only bound states of systems with $0\leq n\leq N$ particles persist in the long time average. The limit is formulated by means of an appropriate weak topology for many-body systems, which was introduced by the second author in a previous work, and is based on reduced density matrices. This topology is connected to the weak-* topology of states on the algebras of canonical commutation or anti-commutation relations, and we give a formulation of our main result in this setting.

Convergence of nodal sets in the adiabatic limit

We study the nodal sets of non-degenerate eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on fibre bundles $π{:}\, M\to B$ in the adiabatic limit. This limit consists in considering a family $G_\varepsilon$ of Riemannian metrics, that are close to Riemannian submersions, for which the ratio of the diameter of the fibres to that of the base is given by $\varepsilon \ll 1$. We assume $M$ to be compact and allow for fibres $F$ with boundary, under the condition that the ground state eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian on $F_x$ is independent of the base point. We prove for $\mathrm{dim} B \leq 3$ that the nodal set of the Dirichlet-eigenfunction $φ$ converges to the pre-image under $π$ of the nodal set of a function $ψ$ on $B$ that is determined as the solution to an effective equation. In particular this implies that the nodal set meets the boundary for $\varepsilon$ small enough and shows that many known results on this question, obtained for some types of domains, also hold on a large class of manifolds with boundary. For the special case of a closed manifold $M$ fibred over the circle $B=S^1$ we obtain finer estimates and prove that every connected component of the nodal set of $φ$ is smoothly isotopic to the typical fibre of $π{:}\, M\to S^1$.
