Tunneling effect induced by a curved magnetic edge

Experimentally observed magnetic fields with nanoscale variations are theoretically modeled by a piece-wise constant function with jump discontinuity along a smooth curve, the magnetic edge. Assuming the edge is a closed curve with an axis of symmetry and the field is sign changing and with exactly two distinct values, we prove that semi-classical tunneling occurs and calculate the magnitude of this tunneling effect.

The Magnetic Scott Correction for Relativistic Matter at Criticality

We provide a proof of the first correction to the leading asymptotics of the minimal energy of pseudo-relativistic molecules in the presence of magnetic fields, the so-called "relativistic Scott correction", when $\max{Z_kα} \leq 2/π$, where $Z_k$ is the charge of the $k$-th nucleus and $α$ is the fine structure constant. Our theorem extends a previous result by Erdős, Fournais, and Solovej to the critical constant $2/π$ in the relativistic Hardy inequality $|p| - \frac{2}{π|x|} \geq 0$.

Semi-classical limit of confined fermionic systems in homogeneous magnetic fields

We consider a system of $ N $ interacting fermions in $ \mathbb{R}^3 $ confined by an external potential and in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field. The intensity of the interaction has the mean-field scaling $ 1/N $. With a semi-classical parameter $ \hbar \sim N^{-1/3} $, we prove convergence in the large $ N $ limit to the appropriate Magnetic Thomas-Fermi type model with various strength scalings of the magnetic field.

Coulomb potentials and Taylor expansions in Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

We investigate when Taylor expansions can be used to prove the Runge-Gross Theorem, which is at the foundation of Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT). We start with a general analysis of the conditions for the Runge-Gross argument, especially the time-differentiability of the density. The latter should be questioned in the presence of singular (e.g. Coulomb) potentials. Then, we show that a singular potential in a one-body operator considerably decreases the class of time-dependent external potentials to which the original argument can be applied. A two-body singularity has an even stronger impact and an external potential is essentially incompatible with it. For the Coulomb interaction and all reasonable initial many-body states, the Taylor expansion only exists to a finite order, except for constant external potentials. Therefore, high-order Taylor expansions are not the right tool to study atoms and molecules in TDDFT.

Lack of diamagnetism and the Little-Parks effect

When a superconducting sample is submitted to a sufficiently strong external magnetic field, the superconductivity of the material is lost. In this paper we prove that this effect does not, in general, take place at a unique value of the external magnetic field strength. Indeed, for a sample in the shape of a narrow annulus the set of magnetic field strengths for which the sample is superconducting is not an interval. This is a rigorous justification of the Little-Parks effect. We also show that the same oscillation effect can happen for disc-shaped samples if the external magnetic field is non-uniform. In this case the oscillations can even occur repeatedly along arbitrarily large values of the Ginzburg--Landau parameter $κ$. The analysis is based on an understanding of the underlying spectral theory for a magnetic Schrödinger operator. It is shown that the ground state energy of such an operator is not in general a monotone function of the intensity of the field, even in the limit of strong fields.

A uniqueness theorem for higher order anharmonic oscillators

We study for $α\in\R$, $k \in {\mathbb N} \setminus \{0\}$ the family of self-adjoint operators \[ -\frac{d^2}{dt^2}+\Bigl(\frac{t^{k+1}}{k+1}-α\Bigr)^2 \] in $L^2(\R)$ and show that if $k$ is even then $α=0$ gives the unique minimum of the lowest eigenvalue of this family of operators. Combined with earlier results this gives that for any $k \geq 1$, the lowest eigenvalue has a unique minimum as a function of $α$.

Real analyticity away from the nucleus of pseudorelativistic Hartree-Fock orbitals

We prove that the Hartree--Fock orbitals of pseudorelativistic atoms, that is, atoms where the kinetic energy of the electrons is given by the pseudorelativistic operator sqrt{-Delta+1}-1, are real analytic away from the origin. As a consequence, the quantum mechanical ground state of such atoms is never a Hartree-Fock state. Our proof is inspired by the classical proof of analyticity by nested balls of Morrey and Nirenberg. However, the technique has to be adapted to take care of the non-local pseudodifferential operator, the singularity of the potential at the origin, and the non-linear terms in the equation.

Superconductivity between HC2 and HC3

Superconductivity for Type II superconductors in external magnetic fields of magnitude between the second and third critical fields is known to be restricted to a narrow boundary region. The profile of the superconducting order parameter in the Ginzburg-Landau model is expected to be governed by an effective one-dimensional model. This is known to be the case for external magnetic fields sufficiently close to the third critical field. In this text we prove such a result on a larger interval of validity.

Analytic structure of many-body Coulombic wave functions

We investigate the analytic structure of solutions of non-relativistic Schr"odinger equations describing Coulombic many-particle systems. We prove the following: Let psi(x) with x=(x_1,...,x_N) in R^{3N} denote an N-electron wavefunction of such a system with one nucleus fixed at the origin. Then in a neighbourhood of a coalescence point, for which x_1=0 and the other electron coordinates do not coincide, and differ from 0, psi can be represented locally as psi(x) = psi^(1)(x) + |x_1|psi^(2)(x) with psi^(1), psi^(2) real analytic. A similar representation holds near two-electron coalescence points. The Kustaanheimo-Stiefel transform and analytic hypoellipticity play an essential role in the proof.

Analytic structure of solutions to multiconfiguration equations

We study the regularity at the positions of the (fixed) nuclei of solutions to (non-relativistic) multiconfiguration equations (including Hartree--Fock) of Coulomb systems. We prove the following: Let {phi_1,...,phi_M} be any solution to the rank--M multiconfiguration equations for a molecule with L fixed nuclei at R_1,...,R_L in R^3. Then, for any j in {1,...,M} and k in {1,...,L}, there exists a neighbourhood U_{j,k} in R^3 of R_k, and functions phi^{(1)}_{j,k}, phi^{(2)}_{j,k}, real analytic in U_{j,k}, such that phi_j(x) = phi^{(1)}_{j,k}(x) + |x - R_k| phi^{(2)}_{j,k}(x), x in U_{j,k} A similar result holds for the corresponding electron density. The proof uses the Kustaanheimo--Stiefel transformation, as applied earlier by the authors to the study of the eigenfunctions of the Schr"odinger operator of atoms and molecules near two-particle coalescence points.

Non-isotropic cusp conditions and regularity of the electron density of molecules at the nuclei

We investigate regularity properties of molecular one-electron densities rho near the nuclei. In particular we derive a representation rho(x)=mu(x)*(e^F(x)) with an explicit function F, only depending on the nuclear charges and the positions of the nuclei, such that mu belongs to C^{1,1}(R^3), i.e., mu has locally essentially bounded second derivatives. An example constructed using Hydrogenic eigenfunctions shows that this regularity result is sharp. For atomic eigenfunctions which are either even or odd with respect to inversion in the origin, we prove that mu is even C^{2,α}(R^3) for all alpha in (0,1). Placing one nucleus at the origin we study rho in polar coordinates x=r*omega and investigate rho'(r,omega) and rho''(r,omega) for fixed omega as r tends to zero. We prove non-isotropic cusp conditions of first and second order, which generalize Kato's classical result.

Third derivative of the one-electron density at the nucleus

We study electron densities of eigenfunctions of atomic Schroedinger operators. We prove the existence of rho~'''(0), the third derivative of the spherically averaged atomic density rho~ at the nucleus. For eigenfunctions with corresponding eigenvalue below the essential spectrum we obtain the bound rho~'''(0) \leq -(7/12)Z^3 rho~(0), where Z denotes the nuclear charge. This bound is optimal.
