At the edge of a cloud of Brownian particles

We study a simple model for the trajectory of a particle in a turbulent fluid, where a Brownian motion travels through a random Gaussian velocity field. We study the quenched law of the process and prove that in a weak environment setting, the fluctuations at the transition from weak to strong disorder are described by the KPZ equation. We conjecture the same is true without the assumption of a weak environment.

Continuity and strict positivity of the multi-layer extension of the stochastic heat equation

We prove the continuity and strict positivity of the multi-layer extension to the stochastic heat equation introduced in [OW11] which form a hierarchy of partition functions for the continuum directed random polymer. This shows that the corresponding free energy (logarithm of the partition function) is well defined. This is also a step towards proving the conjecture stated at the end of the above paper that an array of such partition functions has the Markov property.

Interlacing Diffusions

We study in some generality intertwinings between $h$-transforms of Karlin-McGregor semigroups associated with one dimensional diffusion processes and those of their Siegmund duals. We obtain couplings so that the corresponding processes are interlaced and furthermore give formulae in terms of block determinants for the transition densities of these coupled processes. This allows us to build diffusion processes in the space of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns so that the evolution of each level is Markovian. We show how known examples naturally fit into this framework and construct new processes related to minors of matrix valued diffusions. We also provide explicit formulae for the transition densities of the particle systems with one-sided collisions at either edge of such patterns.

The stochastic heat equation, 2D Toda equations and dynamics for the multilayer process

We show that solutions of the stochastic heat equation driven by space-time white noise, although not smooth, meaningfully solve the two-dimensional Toda equations. Then by extending our arguments we show the time evolution of the multilayer process introduced by O'Connell and Warren is conjugate to a flow induced by the stochastic heat equation. In particular this establishes a Markov property conjectured by O'Connell and Warren. It also defines, for the first time, the multilayer process started from a general initial condition.

Minimizing the time to a decision

Suppose we have three independent copies of a regular diffusion on $[0,1]$ with absorbing boundaries. Of these diffusions, either at least two are absorbed at the upper boundary or at least two at the lower boundary. In this way, they determine a majority decision between 0 and 1. We show that the strategy that always runs the diffusion whose value is currently between the other two reveals the majority decision whilst minimizing the total time spent running the processes.
