On a super-analog of the Schur-Weyl Duality

Two super-analogs of the Schur-Weyl duality are considered: the duality of actions in $(\mathbb{C}^{m|n})^{\otimes N}$ of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m,n)$ and the symmetric group $S_N$, and the duality of actions of the Lie superalgebra $Q(n)$ and a certain finite group $Se(N)$ in $(\mathbb{C}^{n|n})^{\otimes N}$. We construct an isomorphism of symmetric and universal enveloping algebras of these Lie superalgebras called special symmetrization. Using this isomorphism of vector spaces we describe explicitly the duality between the centers of the corresponding universal enveloping algebras and the group algebras.

Half-space Macdonald processes

Macdonald processes are measures on sequences of integer partitions built using the Cauchy summation identity for Macdonald symmetric functions. These measures are a useful tool to uncover the integrability of many probabilistic systems, including the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation and a number of other models in its universality class. In this paper we develop the structural theory behind half-space variants of these models and the corresponding half-space Macdonald processes. These processes are built using a Littlewood summation identity instead of the Cauchy identity, and their analysis is considerably harder than their full-space counterparts. We compute moments and Laplace transforms of observables for general half-space Macdonald measures. Introducing new dynamics preserving this class of measures, we relate them to various stochastic processes, in particular the log-gamma polymer in a half-quadrant (they are also related to the stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and the half-space ASEP). For the polymer model, we provide explicit integral formulas for the Laplace transform of the partition function. Non-rigorous saddle point asymptotics yield convergence of the directed polymer free energy to either the Tracy-Widom GOE, GSE or the Gaussian distribution depending on the average size of weights on the boundary.

Shift-invariance for vertex models and polymers

We establish a symmetry in a variety of integrable stochastic systems: Certain multi-point distributions of natural observables are unchanged under a shift of a subset of observation points. The property holds for stochastic vertex models, (1+1)d directed polymers in random media, last passage percolation, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, and the Airy sheet. In each instance it leads to computations of previously inaccessible joint distributions. The proofs rely on a combination of the Yang-Baxter integrability of the inhomogeneous colored stochastic six-vertex model and Lagrange interpolation. We also show that a simplified (Gaussian) version of our theorems is related to the invariance in law of the local time of the Brownian bridge under the shift of the observation level.

Stochastic six-vertex model in a half-quadrant and half-line open ASEP

We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the positive integers with an open boundary condition. We show that, when starting devoid of particles and for a certain boundary condition, the height function at the origin fluctuates asymptotically (in large time $τ$) according to the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution on the $τ^{1/3}$ scale. This is the first example of KPZ asymptotics for a half-space system outside the class of free-fermionic/determinantal/Pfaffian models. Our main tool in this analysis is a new class of probability measures on Young diagrams that we call half-space Macdonald processes, as well as two surprising relations. The first relates a special (Hall-Littlewood) case of these measures to the half-space stochastic six-vertex model (which further limits to ASEP) using a Yang-Baxter graphical argument. The second relates certain averages under these measures to their half-space (or Pfaffian) Schur process analogs via a refined Littlewood identity.

Product matrix processes as limits of random plane partitions

We consider a random process with discrete time formed by singular values of products of truncations of Haar distributed unitary matrices. We show that this process can be understood as a scaling limit of the Schur process, which gives determinantal formulas for (dynamical) correlation functions and a contour integral representation for the correlation kernel. The relation with the Schur processes implies that the continuous limit of marginals for q-distributed plane partitions coincides with the joint law of singular values for products of truncations of Haar-distributed random unitary matrices. We provide structural reasons for this coincidence that may also extend to other classes of random matrices.

Between the stochastic six vertex model and Hall-Littlewood processes

We prove that the joint distribution of the values of the height function for the stochastic six vertex model in a quadrant along a down-right path coincides with that for the lengths of the first columns of partitions distributed according to certain Hall-Littlewood processes. In the limit when one of the quadrant axes becomes continuous, we also show that the two-dimensional random field of the height function values has the same distribution as the lengths of the first columns of partitions from certain ascending Hall-Littlewood processes evolving under a Robinson-Schensted-Knuth type Markovian evolution.

Higher spin six vertex model and symmetric rational functions

We consider a fully inhomogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant. For this model we derive concise integral representations for multi-point q-moments of the height function and for the q-correlation functions. At least in the case of the step initial condition, our formulas degenerate in appropriate limits to many known formulas of such type for integrable probabilistic systems in the (1+1)d KPZ universality class, including the stochastic six vertex model, ASEP, various q-TASEPs, and associated zero range processes. Our arguments are largely based on properties of a family of symmetric rational functions which can be defined as partition functions of the inhomogeneous higher spin six vertex model for suitable domains. In the homogeneous case, such functions were previously studied in http://arxiv.org/abs/1410.0976; they also generalize classical Hall-Littlewood and Schur polynomials. A key role is played by Cauchy-like summation identities for these functions, which are obtained as a direct corollary of the Yang-Baxter equation for the higher spin six vertex model.

Lectures on Integrable probability: Stochastic vertex models and symmetric functions

We consider a homogeneous stochastic higher spin six vertex model in a quadrant. Our arguments are largely based on properties of a family of symmetric rational functions (introduced in arXiv:1410.0976) that can be defined as partition functions of the higher spin six vertex model for suitable domains; they generalize classical Hall-Littlewood and Schur polynomials. A key role is played by Cauchy-like summation identities for these functions, which are obtained as a direct corollary of the Yang-Baxter equation for the higher spin six vertex model. These are lecture notes for a course given by A.B. at the Ecole de Physique des Houches in July of 2015. All the results and proofs presented here generalize to the setting of the fully inhomogeneous higher spin six vertex model, see arXiv:1601.05770 for a detailed exposition of the inhomogeneous case.

Moments Match between the KPZ Equation and the Airy Point Process

The results of Amir-Corwin-Quastel, Calabrese-Le Doussal-Rosso, Dotsenko, and Sasamoto-Spohn imply that the one-point distribution of the solution of the KPZ equation with the narrow wedge initial condition coincides with that for a multiplicative statistics of the Airy determinantal random point process. Taking Taylor coefficients of the two sides yields moment identities. We provide a simple direct proof of those via a combinatorial match of their multivariate integral representations.

Phase Transitions in the ASEP and Stochastic Six-Vertex Model

In this paper we consider two models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and the stochastic six-vertex model. We introduce a new class of initial data (which we call {\itshape generalized step Bernoulli initial data}) for both of these models that generalizes the step Bernoulli initial data studied in a number of recent works on the ASEP. Under this class of initial data, we analyze the current fluctuations of both the ASEP and stochastic six-vertex model and establish the existence of a phase transition along a characteristic line, across which the fluctuation exponent changes from $1 / 2$ to $1 / 3$. On the characteristic line, the current fluctuations converge to the general (rank $k$) Baik-Ben-Arous-Péché distribution for the law of the largest eigenvalue of a critically spiked covariance matrix. For $k = 1$, this was established for the ASEP by Tracy and Widom; for $k > 1$ (and also $k = 1$, for the stochastic six-vertex model), the appearance of these distributions in both models is new.

Stochastic higher spin six vertex model and Madconald measures

We prove an identity that relates the q-Laplace transform of the height function of a (higher spin inhomogeneous) stochastic six vertex model in a quadrant on one side, and a multiplicative functional of a Macdonald measure on the other. The identity is used to prove the GUE Tracy-Widom asymptotics for two instances of the stochastic six vertex model via asymptotics analysis of the corresponding Schur measures.

Directed random polymers via nested contour integrals

We study the partition function of two versions of the continuum directed polymer in 1+1 dimension. In the full-space version, the polymer starts at the origin and is free to move transversally in the reals, and in the half-space version, the polymer starts at the origin but is reflected at the origin and stays in the negative reals. The partition functions solves the stochastic heat equation in full-space or half-space with mixed boundary condition at the origin; or equivalently the free energy satisfies the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. We derive exact formulas for the Laplace transforms of the partition functions. In the full-space this is expressed as a Fredholm determinant while in the half-space this is expressed as a Fredholm Pfaffian. Taking long-time asymptotics we show that the limiting free energy fluctuations scale with exponent 1/3 and are given by the GUE and GSE Tracy-Widom distributions. These formulas come from summing divergent moment generating functions, hence are not mathematically justified. The primary purpose of this work is to present a mathematical perspective on the polymer replica method which is used to derive these results. In contrast to other replica method work, we do not appeal directly to the Bethe ansatz for the Lieb-Liniger model but rather utilize nested contour integral formulas for moments as well as their residue expansions.

Limit shapes for growing extreme characters of $U(\infty)$

We prove the existence of a limit shape and give its explicit description for certain probability distribution on signatures (or highest weights for unitary groups). The distributions have representation theoretic origin-they encode decomposition on irreducible characters of the restrictions of certain extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group $U(\infty)$ to growing finite-dimensional unitary subgroups $U(N)$. The characters of $U(\infty)$ are allowed to depend on $N$. In a special case, this describes the hydrodynamic behavior for a family of random growth models in $(2+1)$-dimensions with varied initial conditions.

Random tilings and Markov chains for interlacing particles

We explain the relation between certain random tiling models and interacting particle systems belonging to the anisotropic KPZ (Kardar-Parisi-Zhang) universality class in 2+1-dimensions. The link between these two \emph{a priori} disjoint sets of models is a consequence of the presence of shuffling algorithms that generate random tilings under consideration. To see the precise connection, we represent both a random tiling and the corresponding particle system through a set of non-intersecting lines, whose dynamics is induced by the shuffling algorithm or the particle dynamics. The resulting class of measures on line ensembles also fits into the framework of the Schur processes.

From duality to determinants for q-TASEP and ASEP

We prove duality relations for two interacting particle systems: the $q$-deformed totally asymmetric simple exclusion process ($q$-TASEP) and the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP). Expectations of the duality functionals correspond to certain joint moments of particle locations or integrated currents, respectively. Duality implies that they solve systems of ODEs. These systems are integrable and for particular step and half-stationary initial data we use a nested contour integral ansatz to provide explicit formulas for the systems' solutions, and hence also the moments. We form Laplace transform-like generating functions of these moments and via residue calculus we compute two different types of Fredholm determinant formulas for such generating functions. For ASEP, the first type of formula is new and readily lends itself to asymptotic analysis (as necessary to reprove GUE Tracy--Widom distribution fluctuations for ASEP), while the second type of formula is recognizable as closely related to Tracy and Widom's ASEP formula [Comm. Math. Phys. 279 (2008) 815--844, J. Stat. Phys. 132 (2008) 291--300, Comm. Math. Phys. 290 (2009) 129--154, J. Stat. Phys. 140 (2010) 619--634]. For $q$-TASEP, both formulas coincide with those computed via Borodin and Corwin's Macdonald processes [Probab. Theory Related Fields (2014) 158 225--400]. Both $q$-TASEP and ASEP have limit transitions to the free energy of the continuum directed polymer, the logarithm of the solution of the stochastic heat equation or the Hopf--Cole solution to the Kardar--Parisi--Zhang equation. Thus, $q$-TASEP and ASEP are integrable discretizations of these continuum objects; the systems of ODEs associated to their dualities are deformed discrete quantum delta Bose gases; and the procedure through which we pass from expectations of their duality functionals to characterizing generating functions is a rigorous version of the replica trick in physics.

Moments and Lyapunov exponents for the parabolic Anderson model

We study the parabolic Anderson model in $(1+1)$ dimensions with nearest neighbor jumps and space-time white noise (discrete space/continuous time). We prove a contour integral formula for the second moment and compute the second moment Lyapunov exponent. For the model with only jumps to the right, we prove a contour integral formula for all moments and compute moment Lyapunov exponents of all orders.

On a family of symmetric rational functions

This paper is about a family of symmetric rational functions that form a one-parameter generalization of the classical Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We introduce two sets of (skew and non-skew) functions that are akin to P and Q Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We establish (a) a combinatorial formula that represents our functions as partition functions for certain path ensembles in the square grid; (b) symmetrization formulas for non-skew functions; (c) identities of Cauchy and Pieri type; (d) explicit formulas for principal specializations; (e) two types of orthogonality relations for non-skew functions. Our construction is closely related to the half-infinite volume, finite magnon sector limit of the higher spin six-vertex (or XXZ) model, with both sets of functions representing higher spin six-vertex partition functions and/or transfer-matrices for certain domains.

Stochastic six-vertex model

We study the asymmetric six-vertex model in the quadrant with parameters on the stochastic line. We show that the random height function of the model converges to an explicit deterministic limit shape as the mesh size tends to 0. We further prove that the one-point fluctuations around the limit shape are asymptotically governed by the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. We also explain an equivalent formulation of our model as an interacting particle system, which can be viewed as a discrete time generalization of ASEP started from the step initial condition. Our results confirm an earlier prediction of Gwa and Spohn (1992) that this system belongs to the KPZ universality class.

Discrete time q-TASEPs

We introduce two new exactly solvable (stochastic) interacting particle systems which are discrete time versions of q-TASEP. We call these geometric and Bernoulli discrete time q-TASEP. We obtain concise formulas for expectations of a large enough class of observables of the systems to completely characterize their fixed time distributions when started from step initial condition. We then extract Fredholm determinant formulas for the marginal distribution of the location of any given particle. Underlying this work is the fact that these expectations solve closed systems of difference equations which can be rewritten as free evolution equations with k-1 two-body boundary conditions -- discrete q-deformed versions of the quantum delta Bose gas. These can be solved via a nested contour integral ansatz. The same solutions also arise in the study of Macdonald processes, and we show how the systems of equations our expectations solve are equivalent to certain commutation relations involving the Macdonald first difference operator.

Free energy fluctuations for directed polymers in random media in 1+1 dimension

We consider two models for directed polymers in space-time independent random media (the O'Connell-Yor semi-discrete directed polymer and the continuum directed random polymer) at positive temperature and prove their KPZ universality via asymptotic analysis of exact Fredholm determinant formulas for the Laplace transform of their partition functions. In particular, we show that for large time tau, the probability distributions for the free energy fluctuations, when rescaled by tau^{1/3}, converges to the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution. We also consider the effect of boundary perturbations to the quenched random media on the limiting free energy statistics. For the semi-discrete directed polymer, when the drifts of a finite number of the Brownian motions forming the quenched random media are critically tuned, the statistics are instead governed by the limiting Baik-Ben Arous-Peche distributions from spiked random matrix theory. For the continuum polymer, the boundary perturbations correspond to choosing the initial data for the stochastic heat equation from a particular class, and likewise for its logarithm -- the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. The Laplace transform formula we prove can be inverted to give the one-point probability distribution of the solution to these stochastic PDEs for the class of initial data.

Macdonald processes

Macdonald processes are probability measures on sequences of partitions defined in terms of nonnegative specializations of the Macdonald symmetric functions and two Macdonald parameters q,t in [0,1). We prove several results about these processes, which include the following. (1) We explicitly evaluate expectations of a rich family of observables for these processes. (2) In the case t=0, we find a Fredholm determinant formula for a q-Laplace transform of the distribution of the last part of the Macdonald-random partition. (3) We introduce Markov dynamics that preserve the class of Macdonald processes and lead to new "integrable" 2d and 1d interacting particle systems. (4) In a large time limit transition, and as q goes to 1, the particles of these systems crystallize on a lattice, and fluctuations around the lattice converge to O'Connell's Whittaker process that describe semi-discrete Brownian directed polymers. (5) This yields a Fredholm determinant for the Laplace transform of the polymer partition function, and taking its asymptotics we prove KPZ universality for the polymer (free energy fluctuation exponent 1/3 and Tracy-Widom GUE limit law). (6) Under intermediate disorder scaling, we recover the Laplace transform of the solution of the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial data. (7) We provide contour integral formulas for a wide array of polymer moments. (8) This results in a new ansatz for solving quantum many body systems such as the delta Bose gas.

Markov dynamics on the Thoma cone: a model of time-dependent determinantal processes with infinitely many particles

The Thoma cone is an infinite-dimensional locally compact space, which is closely related to the space of extremal characters of the infinite symmetric group. In another context, the Thoma cone appears as the set of parameters for totally positive, upper triangular Toeplitz matrices of infinite size. The purpose of the paper is to construct a family of continuous time Markov processes on the Thoma cone, depending on two continuous parameters. Our construction largely exploits specific properties of the Thoma cone related to its representation-theoretic origin, although we do not use representations directly. On the other hand, we were inspired by analogies with random matrix theory coming from models of Markov dynamics related to orthogonal polynomial ensembles. We show that our processes possess a number of nice properties, namely: (1) every process X is a Feller process; (2) the infinitesimal generator of X, its spectrum, and the eigenfunctions admit an explicit description; (3) in the equilibrium regime, the finite-dimensional distributions of X can be interpreted as (the laws of) infinite-particle systems with determinantal correlations; (4) the corresponding time-dependent correlation kernel admits an explicit expression, and its structure is similar to that of time-dependent correlation kernels appearing in random matrix theory.

Nearest neighbor Markov dynamics on Macdonald processes

Macdonald processes are certain probability measures on two-dimensional arrays of interlacing particles introduced by Borodin and Corwin (arXiv:1111.4408 [math.PR]). They are defined in terms of nonnegative specializations of the Macdonald symmetric functions and depend on two parameters (q,t), where 0<= q, t < 1. Our main result is a classification of continuous time, nearest neighbor Markov dynamics on the space of interlacing arrays that act nicely on Macdonald processes. The classification unites known examples of such dynamics and also yields many new ones. When t = 0, one dynamics leads to a new integrable interacting particle system on the one-dimensional lattice, which is a q-deformation of the PushTASEP (= long-range TASEP). When q = t, the Macdonald processes become the Schur processes of Okounkov and Reshetikhin (arXiv:math/0107056 [math.CO]). In this degeneration, we discover new Robinson--Schensted-type correspondences between words and pairs of Young tableaux that govern some of our dynamics.

Plancherel representations of $U(\infty)$ and correlated Gaussian Free Fields

We study asymptotics of traces of (noncommutative) monomials formed by images of certain elements of the universal enveloping algebra of the infinite-dimensional unitary group in its Plancherel representations. We prove that they converge to (commutative) moments of a Gaussian process that can be viewed as a collection of simply yet nontrivially correlated two-dimensional Gaussian Free Fields. The limiting process has previously arisen via the global scaling limit of spectra for submatrices of Wigner Hermitian random matrices. The results of the present work were announced in arXiv:1203.3010.

Effects of Particle Shape on Growth Dynamics at Edges of Evaporating Colloidal Drops

We study the influence of particle shape on growth processes at the edges of evaporating drops. Aqueous suspensions of colloidal particles evaporate on glass slides, and convective flows during evaporation carry particles from drop center to drop edge, where they accumulate. The resulting particle deposits grow inhomogeneously from the edge in two-dimensions, and the deposition front, or growth line, varies spatio-temporally. Measurements of the fluctuations of the deposition front during evaporation enable us to identify distinct growth processes that depend strongly on particle shape. Sphere deposition exhibits a classic Poisson like growth process; deposition of slightly anisotropic particles, however, belongs to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, and deposition of highly anisotropic ellipsoids appears to belong to a third universality class, characterized by KPZ fluctuations in the presence of quenched disorder.

Markov processes of infinitely many nonintersecting random walks

Consider an N-dimensional Markov chain obtained from N one-dimensional random walks by Doob h-transform with the q-Vandermonde determinant. We prove that as N becomes large, these Markov chains converge to an infinite-dimensional Feller Markov process. The dynamical correlation functions of the limit process are determinantal with an explicit correlation kernel. The key idea is to identify random point processes on Z with q-Gibbs measures on Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes and construct Markov processes on the latter space. Independently, we analyze the large time behavior of PushASEP with finitely many particles and particle-dependent jump rates (it arises as a marginal of our dynamics on Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes). The asymptotics is given by a product of a marginal of the GUE-minor process and geometric distributions.

Renormalized energy concentration in random matrices

We define a "renormalized energy" as an explicit functional on arbitrary point configurations of constant average density in the plane and on the real line. The definition is inspired by ideas of [SS1,SS3]. Roughly speaking, it is obtained by subtracting two leading terms from the Coulomb potential on a growing number of charges. The functional is expected to be a good measure of disorder of a configuration of points. We give certain formulas for its expectation for general stationary random point processes. For the random matrix $β$-sine processes on the real line (beta=1,2,4), and Ginibre point process and zeros of Gaussian analytic functions process in the plane, we compute the expectation explicitly. Moreover, we prove that for these processes the variance of the renormalized energy vanishes, which shows concentration near the expected value. We also prove that the beta=2 sine process minimizes the renormalized energy in the class of determinantal point processes with translation invariant correlation kernels.

Random surface growth with a wall and Plancherel measures for O(infinity)

We consider a Markov evolution of lozenge tilings of a quarter-plane and study its asymptotics at large times. One of the boundary rays serves as a reflecting wall. We observe frozen and liquid regions, prove convergence of the local correlations to translation-invariant Gibbs measures in the liquid region, and obtain new discrete Jacobi and symmetric Pearcey determinantal point processes near the wall. The model can be viewed as the one-parameter family of Plancherel measures for the infinite-dimensional orthogonal group, and we use this interpretation to derive the determinantal formula for the correlation functions at any finite time moment.

The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph: A new approach

The Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is an infinite graded graph that encodes branching of irreducible characters of the unitary groups. The boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph has at least three incarnations --- as a discrete potential theory boundary, as the set of finite indecomposable characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group, and as the set of doubly infinite totally positive sequences. An old deep result due to Albert Edrei and Dan Voiculescu provides an explicit description of the boundary; it can be realized as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. The paper contains a novel approach to the Edrei-Voiculescu theorem. It is based on a new explicit formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). The formula is obtained via the theory of symmetric functions, and new Schur-like symmetric functions play a key role in the derivation.

The Young bouquet and its boundary

The classification results for the extreme characters of two basic "big" groups, the infinite symmetric group S(infinity) and the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity), are remarkably similar. It does not seem to be possible to explain this phenomenon using a suitable extension of the Schur-Weyl duality to infinite dimension. We suggest an explanation of a different nature that does not have analogs in the classical representation theory. We start from the combinatorial/probabilistic approach to characters of "big" groups initiated by Vershik and Kerov. In this approach, the space of extreme characters is viewed as a boundary of a certain infinite graph. In the cases of S(infinity) and U(infinity), those are the Young graph and the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph, respectively. We introduce a new related object that we call the Young bouquet. It is a poset with continuous grading whose boundary we define and compute. We show that this boundary is a cone over the boundary of the Young graph, and at the same time it is also a degeneration of the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph. The Young bouquet has an application to constructing infinite-dimensional Markov processes with determinantal correlation functions.

CLT for spectra of submatrices of Wigner random matrices II. Stochastic evolution

We show that the global fluctuations of spectra of GOE and GUE matrices and their principal submatrices executing Dyson's Brownian motion are Gaussian in the limit of large matrix dimensions. For nested submatrices one obtains a limiting three-dimensional generalized Gaussian process; its restrictions to two-dimensional sections that are monotone in matrix sizes and time moments coincide with the two-dimensional Gaussian Free Field with zero boundary conditions. The proof is by moment convergence, and it extends to more general Wigner matrices and their stochastic evolution.

Markov processes on the path space of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph and on its boundary

We construct a four-parameter family of Markov processes on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes that preserve the class of central (Gibbs) measures. Any process in the family induces a Feller Markov process on the infinite-dimensional boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph or, equivalently, the space of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity). The process has a unique invariant distribution which arises as the decomposing measure in a natural problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) posed in arXiv:math/0109193. As was shown in arXiv:math/0109194, this measure can also be described as a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel expressed through the Gauss hypergeometric function.

Schur dynamics of the Schur processes

We construct discrete time Markov chains that preserve the class of Schur processes on partitions and signatures. One application is a simple exact sampling algorithm for q^{volume}-distributed skew plane partitions with an arbitrary back wall. Another application is a construction of Markov chains on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes that represent deterministic flows on the space of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group.

q-Distributions on boxed plane partitions

We introduce elliptic weights of boxed plane partitions and prove that they give rise to a generalization of MacMahon's product formula for the number of plane partitions in a box. We then focus on the most general positive degenerations of these weights that are related to orthogonal polynomials; they form three two-dimensional families. For distributions from these families we prove two types of results. First, we construct explicit Markov chains that preserve these distributions. In particular, this leads to a relatively simple exact sampling algorithm. Second, we consider a limit when all dimensions of the box grow and plane partitions become large, and prove that the local correlations converge to those of ergodic translation invariant Gibbs measures. For fixed proportions of the box, the slopes of the limiting Gibbs measures (that can also be viewed as slopes of tangent planes to the hypothetical limit shape) are encoded by a single quadratic polynomial.

Two speed TASEP

We consider the TASEP on Z with two blocks of particles having different jump rates. We study the large time behavior of particles' positions. It depends both on the jump rates and the region we focus on, and we determine the complete process diagram. In particular, we discover a new transition process in the region where the influence of the random and deterministic parts of the initial condition interact. Slow particles may create a shock, where the particle density is discontinuous and the distribution of a particle's position is asymptotically singular. We determine the diffusion coefficient of the shock without using second class particles. We also analyze the case where particles are effectively blocked by a wall moving with speed equal to their intrinsic jump rate.

Anisotropic growth of random surfaces in 2+1 dimensions

We construct a family of stochastic growth models in 2+1 dimensions, that belong to the anisotropic KPZ class. Appropriate projections of these models yield 1+1 dimensional growth models in the KPZ class and random tiling models. We show that correlation functions associated to our models have determinantal structure, and we study large time asymptotics for one of the models. The main asymptotic results are: (1) The growing surface has a limit shape that consists of facets interpolated by a curved piece. (2) The one-point fluctuations of the height function in the curved part are asymptotically normal with variance of order ln(t) for time t>>1. (3) There is a map of the (2+1)-dimensional space-time to the upper half-plane H such that on space-like submanifolds the multi-point fluctuations of the height function are asymptotically equal to those of the pullback of the Gaussian free (massless) field on H.

Anisotropic KPZ growth in 2+1 dimensions: fluctuations and covariance structure

In [arXiv:0804.3035] we studied an interacting particle system which can be also interpreted as a stochastic growth model. This model belongs to the anisotropic KPZ class in 2+1 dimensions. In this paper we present the results that are relevant from the perspective of stochastic growth models, in particular: (a) the surface fluctuations are asymptotically Gaussian on a sqrt(ln(t)) scale and (b) the correlation structure of the surface is asymptotically given by the massless field.

Gibbs Ensembles of Nonintersecting Paths

We consider a family of determinantal random point processes on the two-dimensional lattice and prove that members of our family can be interpreted as a kind of Gibbs ensembles of nonintersecting paths. Examples include probability measures on lozenge and domino tilings of the plane, some of which are non-translation-invariant. The correlation kernels of our processes can be viewed as extensions of the discrete sine kernel, and we show that the Gibbs property is a consequence of simple linear relations satisfied by these kernels. The processes depend on infinitely many parameters, which are closely related to parametrization of totally positive Toeplitz matrices.

Shuffling algorithm for boxed plane partitions

We introduce discrete time Markov chains that preserve uniform measures on boxed plane partitions. Elementary Markov steps change the size of the box from (a x b x c) to ((a-1) x (b+1) x c) or ((a+1) x (b-1) x c). Algorithmic realization of each step involves O((a+b)c) operations. One application is an efficient perfect random sampling algorithm for uniformly distributed boxed plane partitions. Trajectories of our Markov chains can be viewed as random point configurations in the three-dimensional lattice. We compute the bulk limits of the correlation functions of the resulting random point process on suitable two-dimensional sections. The limiting correlation functions define a two-dimensional determinantal point processes with certain Gibbs properties.

The Ginibre ensemble of real random matrices and its scaling limits

We give a closed form for the correlation functions of ensembles of a class of asymmetric real matrices in terms of the Pfaffian of an antisymmetric matrix formed from a $2 \times 2$ matrix kernel associated to the ensemble. We apply this result to the real Ginibre ensemble and compute the bulk and edge scaling limits of its correlation functions as the size of the matrices becomes large.

Asymptotics of Plancherel measures for the infinite-dimensional unitary group

We study a two-dimensional family of probability measures on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes induced by a distinguished family of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These measures are unitary group analogs of the well-known Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. We show that any measure from our family defines a determinantal point process, and we prove that in appropriate scaling limits, such processes converge to two different extensions of the discrete sine process as well as to the extended Airy and Pearcey processes.

Large time asymptotics of growth models on space-like paths II: PNG and parallel TASEP

We consider the polynuclear growth (PNG) model in 1+1 dimension with flat initial condition and no extra constraints. The joint distributions of surface height at finitely many points at a fixed time moment are given as marginals of a signed determinantal point process. The long time scaling limit of the surface height is shown to coincide with the Airy_1 process. This result holds more generally for the observation points located along any space-like path in the space-time plane. We also obtain the corresponding results for the discrete time TASEP (totally asymmetric simple exclusion process) with parallel update.

Fluctuations in the discrete TASEP with periodic initial configurations and the Airy_1 process

We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) in discrete time with sequential update. The joint distribution of the positions of selected particles is expressed as a Fredholm determinant with a kernel defining a signed determinantal point process. We focus on periodic initial conditions where particles occupy dZ, d>=2. In the proper large time scaling limit, the fluctuations of particle positions are described by the Airy_1 process. Interpreted as a growth model, this confirms universality of fluctuations with flat initial conditions for a discrete set of slopes.

Expectations of hook products on large partitions

Given uniform probability on words of length M=Np+k, from an alphabet of size p, consider the probability that a word (i) contains a subsequence of letters (p, p-1,...,1) in that order and (ii) that the maximal length of the disjoint union of p-1 increasing subsequences of the word is \leq M-N . A generating function for this probability has the form of an integral over the Grassmannian of p-planes in complex C^n. The present paper shows that the asymptotics of this probability, when N tends to infinity, is related to the kth moment of the chi^2-distribution of parameter 2p^2. This is related to the behavior of the integral over the Grassmannian Gr(p,C^n) of p-planes in C^n, when the dimension of the ambient space C^n becomes very large. A different scaling limit for the Poissonized probability is related to a new matrix integral, itself a solution of the Painlevé IV equation. This is part of a more general set-up related to the Painlevé V equation.

Harmonic functions on multiplicative graphs and interpolation polynomials

We construct examples of nonnegative harmonic functions on certain graded graphs: the Young lattice and its generalizations. Such functions first emerged in harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group. Our method relies on multivariate interpolation polynomials associated with Schur's S and P functions and with Jack symmetric functions. As a by-product, we compute certain Selberg-type integrals.
