A class of well-posed parabolic final value problems

This paper focuses on parabolic final value problems, and well-posedness is proved for a large class of these. The clarification is obtained from Hilbert spaces that characterise data that give existence, uniqueness and stability of the solutions. The data space is the graph normed domain of an unbounded operator that maps final states to the corresponding initial states. It induces a new compatibility condition, depending crucially on the fact that analytic semigroups always are invertible in the class of closed operators. Lax--Milgram operators in vector distribution spaces constitute the main framework. The final value heat conduction problem on a smooth open set is also proved to be well posed, and non-zero Dirichlet data are shown to require an extended compatibility condition obtained by adding an improper Bochner integral.

Isomorphic well-posedness of the final value problem for the heat equation with the homogeneous Neumann condition

This paper concerns the final value problem for the heat equation under the homogeneous Neumann condition on the boundary of a smooth open set in Euclidean space. The problem is here shown to be isomorphically well posed in the sense that there exists a linear homeomorphism between suitably chosen Hilbert spaces containing the solutions and the data, respectively. This improves a recent work of the author, in which the problem was proven well-posed in the original sense of Hadamard under an additional assumption of Hölder continuity of the source term. The point of departure is an abstract analysis in spaces of vector distributions of final value problems generated by coercive Lax--Milgram operators, yielding isomorphic well-posedness for such problems. Hereby the data space is the graph normed domain of an unbounded operator that maps final states to the corresponding initial states, resulting in a non-local compatibility condition on the data. As a novelty, a stronger version of the compatibility condition is introduced with the purpose of characterising the data that yield solutions having the regularity property of being square integrable in the generator's graph norm (instead of its form domain norm). This result allows a direct application to the considered inverse Neumann heat problem.

On a criterion for log-convex decay in non-selfadjoint dynamics

The short-time and global behaviour are studied for autonomous linear evolution equations defined by generators of uniformly bounded holomorphic semigroups in a Hilbert space. A general criterion for log-convexity in time of the norm of the solution is treated. Strict decrease and differentiability at the initial time results, with a derivative controlled by the lower bound of the negative generator, which is proved strictly accretive with equal numerical and spectral abscissas.

$L_p$-Theory of Type $1,1$-Operators

This is a continuation of recent work on the general definition of pseudo-differential operators of type $1,1$, in Hörmander's sense. Continuity in $L_p$-Sobolev spaces and Hölder--Zygmund spaces, and more generally in Besov and Lizorkin--Triebel spaces, is proved for positive smoothness, with extension to arbitrary smoothness for operators in the self-adjoint subclass. As a main tool the paradifferential decomposition is used for type $1,1$-operators in combination with the Spectral Support Rule for pseudo-differential operators and pointwise estimates in terms of maximal functions of Peetre--Fefferman--Stein type.

Anisotropic Lizorkin--Triebel Spaces with Mixed Norms --- Traces on Smooth Boundaries

This article deals with trace operators on anisotropic Lizorkin--Triebel spaces with mixed norms over cylindrical domains with smooth boundary. As a preparation we include a rather self-contained exposition of Lizorkin--Triebel spaces on manifolds and extend these results to mixed-norm Lizorkin--Triebel spaces on cylinders in Euclidean space. In addition Rychkov's universal extension operator for a half space is shown to be bounded with respect to the mixed norms, and a support preserving right-inverse of the trace is given explicitly and proved to be continuous in the scale of mixed-norm Lizorkin--Triebel spaces. As an application, the heat equation is considered in these spaces, and the necessary compatibility conditions on the data are deduced.

Characterisation by Local Means of Anisotropic Lizorkin--Triebel Spaces with Mixed Norms

This is a contribution to the theory of Lizorkin--Triebel spaces having mixed Lebesgue norms and quasi-homogeneous smoothness. We discuss their characterisation in terms of general quasi-norms based on convolutions. In particular, this covers the case of local means, in Triebel's terminology. The main step is an extension of some crucial inequalities due to Rychkov to the case with mixed norms.

Fundamental Results for Pseudo-Differential Operators of Type $\mathbf{1},\mathbf{1}$

This paper develops some deeper consequences of an extended definition, proposed previously by the author, of pseudo-differential operators that are of type $1,1$ in Hörmander's sense. Thus, it contributes to the long-standing problem of creating a systematic theory of such operators. It is shown that type $1,1$-operators are defined and continuous on the full space of temperate distributions, if they fulfil Hörmander's twisted diagonal condition, or more generally if they belong to the self-adjoint subclass; and that they are always defined on the temperate smooth functions. As a main tool the paradifferential decomposition is derived for type $1,1$-operators, and to confirm a natural hypothesis the symmetric term is shown to cause the domain restrictions; whereas the other terms are shown to define nice type $1,1$-operators fulfilling the twisted diagonal condition. The decomposition is analysed in the type $1,1$-context by combining the Spectral Support Rule and the factorisation inequality, which gives pointwise estimates of pseudo-differential operators in terms of maximal functions.

Parametrices and exact paralinearisation of semi-linear boundary problems

The subject is parametrices for semi-linear problems, based on parametrices for linear boundary problems and on non-linearities that decompose into solution-dependent linear operators acting on the solutions. Non-linearities of product type are shown to admit this via exact paralinearisation. The parametrices give regularity properties under weak conditions; improvements in subdomains result from pseudo-locality of type $1,1$-operators. The framework encompasses a broad class of boundary problems in Hölder and $L_p$-Sobolev spaces (and also Besov and Lizorkin--Triebel spaces). The Besov analyses of homogeneous distributions, tensor products and halfspace extensions have been revised. Examples include the von Karman equation.

Pointwise estimates of pseudo-differential operators

As a new technique it is shown how general pseudo-differential operators can be estimated at arbitrary points in Euclidean space when acting on functions $u$ with compact spectra. The estimate is a factorisation inequality, in which one factor is the Peetre--Fefferman--Stein maximal function of $u$, whilst the other is a symbol factor carrying the whole information on the symbol. The symbol factor is estimated in terms of the spectral radius of $u$, so that the framework is well suited for Littlewood--Paley analysis. It is also shown how it gives easy access to results on polynomial bounds and estimates in $L_p$, including a new result for type $1,1$-operators that they are always bounded on $L_p$-functions with compact spectra.

Simple proofs of nowhere-differentiability for Weierstrass's function and cases of slow growth

Using a few basics from integration theory, a short proof of nowhere-differentiability of Weierstrass functions is given. Restated in terms of the Fourier transformation, the method consists in principle of a second microlocalisation, which is used to derive two general results on existence of nowhere differentiable functions. Examples are given in which the frequencies are of polynomial growth and of almost quadratic growth as a borderline case.
