Robust Channel Estimation for Optical Wireless Communications Using Neural Network

Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) has gained significant attention due to its high-speed data transmission and throughput. Optical wireless channels are often assumed to be flat, but we evaluate frequency selective channels to consider high data rate optical wireless or very dispersive environments. To address this for optical scenarios, this paper presents a robust channel estimation framework with low-complexity to mitigate frequency-selective effects, then to improve system reliability and performance. This channel estimation framework contains a neural network that can estimate general optical wireless channels without prior channel information about the environment. Based on this estimate and the corresponding delay spread, one of several candidate offline-trained neural networks will be activated to predict this channel. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method has improved and robust normalized mean square error (NMSE) and bit error rate (BER) performance compared to conventional estimation methods while maintaining computational efficiency. These findings highlight the potential of neural network solutions in enhancing the performance of OWC systems under indoor channel conditions.

Attention Based Neural Networks for Wireless Channel Estimation

In this paper, we deploy the self-attention mechanism to achieve improved channel estimation for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing waveforms in the downlink. Specifically, we propose a new hybrid encoder-decoder structure (called HA02) for the first time which exploits the attention mechanism to focus on the most important input information. In particular, we implement a transformer encoder block as the encoder to achieve the sparsity in the input features and a residual neural network as the decoder respectively, inspired by the success of the attention mechanism. Using 3GPP channel models, our simulations show superior estimation performance compared with other candidate neural network methods for channel estimation.

Low Complexity Channel estimation with Neural Network Solutions

Research on machine learning for channel estimation, especially neural network solutions for wireless communications, is attracting significant current interest. This is because conventional methods cannot meet the present demands of the high speed communication. In the paper, we deploy a general residual convolutional neural network to achieve channel estimation for the orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in a downlink scenario. Our method also deploys a simple interpolation layer to replace the transposed convolutional layer used in other networks to reduce the computation cost. The proposed method is more easily adapted to different pilot patterns and packet sizes. Compared with other deep learning methods for channel estimation, our results for 3GPP channel models suggest improved mean squared error performance for our approach.

Effects of Turbulence Induced Scattering on Underwater Optical Wireless Communications

This paper presents a comprehensive description of the relative effect of optical underwater turbulence in combination with absorption and scattering. Turbulence induced scattering is shown to cause and increase both spatial and temporal spreading at the receiver plane. It is also demonstrated that the relative impact of turbulence on a received signal is lower in a highly scattering channel. Received intensity distributions are presented confirming that fluctuations in received power from this method follow the commonly used Log-Normal fading model. The impact of turbulence induced scattering on maximum achievable data rate in the underwater channel is investigated.

Energy Efficiency Maximization in Millimeter Wave Hybrid MIMO Systems for 5G and Beyond

At millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies, the higher cost and power consumption of hardware components in multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) systems do not allow beamforming entirely at the baseband with a separate radio frequency (RF) chain for each antenna. In such scenarios, to enable spatial multiplexing, hybrid beamforming, which uses phase shifters to connect a fewer number of RF chains to a large number of antennas is a cost effective and energy-saving alternative. This paper describes our research on fully adaptive transceivers that adapt their behaviour on a frame-by-frame basis, so that a mmWave hybrid MIMO system always operates in the most energy efficient manner. Exhaustive search based brute force approach is computationally intensive, so we study fractional programming as a low-cost alternative to solve the problem which maximizes energy efficiency. The performance results indicate that the resulting mmWave hybrid MIMO transceiver achieves significantly improved energy efficiency results compared to the baseline cases involving analogue-only or digital-only signal processing solutions, and shows performance trade-offs with the brute force approach.

Joint Bit Allocation and Hybrid Beamforming Optimization for Energy Efficient Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

In this paper, we aim to design highly energy efficient end-to-end communication for millimeter wave multiple-input multiple-output systems. This is done by jointly optimizing the digital-to-analog converter (DAC)/analog-to-digital converter (ADC) bit resolutions and hybrid beamforming matrices. The novel decomposition of the hybrid precoder and the hybrid combiner to three parts is introduced at the transmitter (TX) and the receiver (RX), respectively, representing the analog precoder/combiner matrix, the DAC/ADC bit resolution matrix and the baseband precoder/combiner matrix. The unknown matrices are computed as a solution to the matrix factorization problem where the optimal fully digital precoder or combiner is approximated by the product of these matrices. A novel and efficient solution based on the alternating direction method of multipliers is proposed to solve these problems at both the TX and the RX. The simulation results show that the proposed solution, where the DAC/ADC bit allocation is dynamic during operation, achieves higher energy efficiency when compared with existing benchmark techniques that use fixed DAC/ADC bit resolutions.

Knowledge Patterns

This paper describes a new technique, called "knowledge patterns", for helping construct axiom-rich, formal ontologies, based on identifying and explicitly representing recurring patterns of knowledge (theory schemata) in the ontology, and then stating how those patterns map onto domain-specific concepts in the ontology. From a modeling perspective, knowledge patterns provide an important insight into the structure of a formal ontology: rather than viewing a formal ontology simply as a list of terms and axioms, knowledge patterns views it as a collection of abstract, modular theories (the "knowledge patterns") plus a collection of modeling decisions stating how different aspects of the world can be modeled using those theories. Knowledge patterns make both those abstract theories and their mappings to the domain of interest explicit, thus making modeling decisions clear, and avoiding some of the ontological confusion that can otherwise arise. In addition, from a computational perspective, knowledge patterns provide a simple and computationally efficient mechanism for facilitating knowledge reuse. We describe the technique and an application built using them, and then critique its strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that this technique enables us to better explicate both the structure and modeling decisions made when constructing a formal axiom-rich ontology.

Energy Efficient ADC Bit Allocation and Hybrid Combining for Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

Low resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) can be employed to improve the energy efficiency (EE) of a wireless receiver since the power consumption of each ADC is exponentially related to its sampling resolution and the hardware complexity. In this paper, we aim to jointly optimize the sampling resolution, i.e., the number of ADC bits, and analog/digital hybrid combiner matrices which provides highly energy efficient solutions for millimeter wave multiple-input multiple output systems. A novel decomposition of the hybrid combiner to three parts is introduced: the analog combiner matrix, the bit resolution matrix and the baseband combiner matrix. The unknown matrices are computed as the solution to a matrix factorization problem where the optimal, fully digital combiner is approximated by the product of these matrices. An efficient solution based on the alternating direction method of multipliers is proposed to solve this problem. The simulation results show that the proposed solution achieves high EE performance when compared with existing benchmark techniques that use fixed ADC resolutions.

Capacity and Delay Tradeoff of Secondary Cellular Networks with Spectrum Aggregation

Cellular communication networks are plagued with redundant capacity, which results in low utilization and cost-effectiveness of network capital investments. The redundant capacity can be exploited to deliver secondary traffic that is ultra-elastic and delay-tolerant. In this paper, we propose an analytical framework to study the capacity-delay tradeoff of elastic/secondary traffic in large scale cellular networks with spectrum aggregation. Our framework integrates stochastic geometry and queueing theory models and gives analytical insights into the capacity-delay performance in the interference limited regime. Closed-form results are obtained to characterize the mean delay and delay distribution as functions of per user throughput capacity. The impacts of spectrum aggregation, user and base station (BS) densities, traffic session payload, and primary traffic dynamics on the capacity-delay tradeoff relationship are investigated. The fundamental capacity limit is derived and its scaling behavior is revealed. Our analysis shows the feasibility of providing secondary communication services over cellular networks and highlights some critical design issues.

Energy Efficiency Optimization of 5G Radio Frequency Chain Systems

With the massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antennas technology adopted for the fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems, a large number of radio frequency (RF) chains have to be employed for RF circuits. However, a large number of RF chains not only increase the cost of RF circuits but also consume additional energy in 5G wireless communication systems. In this paper we investigate energy and cost efficiency optimization solutions for 5G wireless communication systems with a large number of antennas and RF chains. An energy efficiency optimization problem is formulated for 5G wireless communication systems using massive MIMO antennas and millimeter wave technology. Considering the nonconcave feature of the objective function, a suboptimal iterative algorithm, i.e., the energy efficient hybrid precoding (EEHP) algorithm is developed for maximizing the energy efficiency of 5G wireless communication systems. To reduce the cost of RF circuits, the energy efficient hybrid precoding with the minimum number of RF chains (EEHP-MRFC) algorithm is also proposed. Moreover, the critical number of antennas searching (CNAS) and user equipment number optimization (UENO) algorithms are further developed to optimize the energy efficiency of 5G wireless communication systems by the number of transmit antennas and UEs. Compared with the maximum energy efficiency of conventional zero-forcing (ZF) precoding algorithm, numerical results indicate that the maximum energy efficiency of the proposed EEHP and EEHP-MRFC algorithms are improved by 220% and 171%, respectively.

Wireless Fractal Cellular Networks

With the seamless coverage of wireless cellular networks in modern society, it is interesting to consider the shape of wireless cellular coverage. Is the shape a regular hexagon, an irregular polygon, or another complex geometrical shape? Based on fractal theory, the statistical characteristic of the wireless cellular coverage boundary is determined by the measured wireless cellular data collected from Shanghai, China. The measured results indicate that the wireless cellular coverage boundary presents an extremely irregular geometrical shape, which is also called a statistical fractal shape. Moreover, the statistical fractal characteristics of the wireless cellular coverage boundary have been validated by values of the Hurst parameter estimated in angular scales. The statistical fractal characteristics of the wireless cellular coverage boundary can be used to evaluate and design the handoff scheme of mobile user terminals in wireless cellular networks.

5G green cellular networks considering power allocation schemes

It is important to assess the effect of transmit power allocation schemes on the energy consumption on random cellular networks. The energy efficiency of 5G green cellular networks with average and water-filling power allocation schemes is studied in this paper. Based on the proposed interference and achievable rate model, an energy efficiency model is proposed for MIMO random cellular networks. Furthermore, the energy efficiency with average and water-filling power allocation schemes are presented, respectively. Numerical results indicate that the maximum limits of energy efficiency are always there for MIMO random cellular networks with different intensity ratios of mobile stations (MSs) to base stations (BSs) and channel conditions. Compared with the average power allocation scheme, the water-filling scheme is shown to improve the energy efficiency of MIMO random cellular networks when channel state information (CSI) is attainable for both transmitters and receivers.

Interference Allocation Scheduler for Green Multimedia Delivery

One of the key challenges in wireless networking is how to allocate the available radio resources in order to maximise key service delivery parameters such as the aggregate throughput and the multimedia quality of experience (QoE). We propose a novel and effective scheduling policy that allocates resource blocks, such that interference power is shifted towards capacity-saturated users, while improving the throughput of unsaturated users. The highlight of the research is that the proposed scheme can dramatically improve the performance of cells that have a high discrepancy in its signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) distribution, which is typical in urban areas. The results show that a \emph{free-lunch} solution is possible, whereby for a negligible performance degradation in the saturated users, a large improvement in the non-saturated users can be obtained. However, on average, the number of free-lunch user pairings are low. By relaxing the degradation constraints, the \emph{non-free-lunch} solution can yield a greater multi-user throughput gain. Motivated by surge in mobile multimedia traffic, we further demonstrate that the proposed scheduling may have a profound impact on both energy efficiency and QoE of multimedia service delivery.

The Parameters For Powerline Channel Modeling

This is a support document which describes the properties of the cable and parameters of the formulas for the statistical powerline channel modeling. The cable parameters help the reader build powerline channel according to the transmission line theory. The document also presents the parameters which describe the distribution of the number of path, path magnitude, path interval and the cable loss feature of the powerline channel. By using the parameters in this document, readers can model the powerline channel according to the statistical methodology proposed.

Interference Mitigation for Cognitive Radio MIMO Systems Based on Practical Precoding

In this paper, we propose two subspace-projection-based precoding schemes, namely, full-projection (FP)- and partial-projection (PP)-based precoding, for a cognitive radio multiple-input multiple-output (CR-MIMO) network to mitigate its interference to a primary time-division-duplexing (TDD) system. The proposed precoding schemes are capable of estimating interference channels between CR and primary networks, and incorporating the interference from the primary to the CR system into CR precoding via a novel sensing approach. Then, the CR performance and resulting interference of the proposed precoding schemes are analyzed and evaluated. By fully projecting the CR transmission onto a null space of the interference channels, the FP-based precoding scheme can effectively avoid interfering the primary system with boosted CR throughput. While, the PP-based scheme is able to further improve the CR throughput by partially projecting its transmission onto the null space.

Luminosity distance and redshift in the Szekeres inhomogeneous cosmological models

The Szekeres inhomogeneous models can be used to model the true lumpy universe that we observe. This family of exact solutions to Einstein's equations was originally derived with a general metric that has no symmetries. In this work, we develop and use a framework to integrate the angular diameter and luminosity distances in the general Szekeres models. We use the affine null geodesic equations in order to derive a set of first-order ordinary differential equations that can be integrated numerically to calculate the partial derivatives of the null vector components. These equations allow the integration in all generality of the distances in the Szekeres models and some examples are given. The redshift is determined from simultaneous integration of the null geodesic equations. This work does not assume spherical or axial symmetry, and the results will be useful for comparisons of the general Szekeres inhomogeneous models to current and future cosmological data.

Aggregate Interference Modeling in Cognitive Radio Networks with Power and Contention Control

In this paper, we present an interference model for cognitive radio (CR) networks employing power control, contention control or hybrid power/contention control schemes. For the first case, a power control scheme is proposed to govern the transmission power of a CR node. For the second one, a contention control scheme at the media access control (MAC) layer, based on carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA), is proposed to coordinate the operation of CR nodes with transmission requests. The probability density functions of the interference received at a primary receiver from a CR network are first derived numerically for these two cases. For the hybrid case, where power and contention controls are jointly adopted by a CR node to govern its transmission, the interference is analyzed and compared with that of the first two schemes by simulations. Then, the interference distributions under the first two control schemes are fitted by log-normal distributions with greatly reduced complexity. Moreover, the effect of a hidden primary receiver on the interference experienced at the receiver is investigated. It is demonstrated that both power and contention controls are effective approaches to alleviate the interference caused by CR networks. Some in-depth analysis of the impact of key parameters on the interference of CR networks is given via numerical studies as well.

Pareto Region Characterization for Rate Control in Multi-User Systems and Nash Bargaining

The problem of rate control in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference systems is formulated as a multicriteria optimization (MCO) problem. The Pareto rate region of the MCO problem is characterized. It is shown that for the convexity of the Pareto rate region it is sufficient that the interference-plus-noise covariance matrices (INCMs) of multiple users with conflicting objectives approach identity matrix. The latter can be achieved by using either orthogonal signaling, time-sharing, or interference cancellation strategies. In the case of high interference, the interference cancellation is preferable in order to increase the Pareto boundary and guarantee the convexity of the Pareto rate region. The Nash bargaining (NB) is applied to transform the MCO problem into a single-objective one. The characteristics of the NB over MIMO interference systems such as the uniqueness, existence of the NB solution, and feasibility of the NB set are investigated. When the NB solution exists, the sufficient condition for the corresponding single-objective problem to have a unique solution is that the INCMs of users approach identity matrix. A simple multi-stage interference cancellation scheme, which leads to a larger convex Pareto rate region and, correspondingly, a unique NB solution with larger user rates compared to the orthogonal and time-sharing signaling schemes, is proposed. The convexity of the rate region, effectiveness of the proposed interference cancellation technique, and existence of the NB solution for MIMO interference systems are examined by means of numerical studies. The fairness of the NB solution is also demonstrated. Finally, the special cases of multi-input single-output (MISO) and single-input single-output (SISO) interference systems are also considered.

Supernova, baryon acoustic oscillations, and CMB surface distance constraints on f(G) higher order gravity models

We consider recently proposed higher order gravity models where the action is built from the Einstein-Hilbert action plus a function f(G) of the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The models were previously shown to pass physical acceptability conditions as well as solar system tests. In this paper, we compare the models to combined data sets of supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, and constraints from the CMB surface of last scattering. We find that the models provide fits to the data that are close to those of the LCDM concordance model. The results provide a pool of higher order gravity models that pass these tests and need to be compared to constraints from large scale structure and full CMB analysis.

Recovering Multiplexing Loss Through Successive Relaying Using Repetition Coding

In this paper, a transmission protocol is studied for a two relay wireless network in which simple repetition coding is applied at the relays. Information-theoretic achievable rates for this transmission scheme are given, and a space-time V-BLAST signalling and detection method that can approach them is developed. It is shown through the diversity multiplexing tradeoff analysis that this transmission scheme can recover the multiplexing loss of the half-duplex relay network, while retaining some diversity gain. This scheme is also compared with conventional transmission protocols that exploit only the diversity of the network at the cost of a multiplexing loss. It is shown that the new transmission protocol offers significant performance advantages over conventional protocols, especially when the interference between the two relays is sufficiently strong.
