Horocycle dynamics: new invariants and eigenform loci in the stratum H(1,1)

We study dynamics of the horocycle flow on strata of translation surfaces, introduce new invariants for ergodic measures, and analyze the interaction of the horocycle flow and real Rel surgeries. We use this analysis to complete and extend results of Calta and Wortman classifying horocycle-invariant measures in the eigenform loci. We classify the orbit-closures and prove that every orbit is equidistributed in its orbit-closure. We also prove equidistribution statements regarding limits of sequences of measures, some of which have applications to counting problems.

A Symbolic Characterization of the Horseshoe Locus in the Hénon Family

We consider the family of quadratic Hénon diffeomorphisms of the plane ${\bf R}^2$. A map will be said to be a "horseshoe" if its restriction to the nonwandering set is hyperbolic and conjugate to the full 2-shift. We give a criterion for being a horseshoe based on an auxiliary coding which describes positions of points relative to the stable manifold of one of the fixed points. In addition we describe the topological conjugacy type of maps on the boundary of the horseshoe locus. We use complex techniques and we work with maps in a parameter region which is a 2-D analog of the familiar "${1\over 2}$-wake" for the quadratic family $p_c(z) = z^2$.

Parabolic Bifurcations in Complex Dimension 2

Parabolic bifurcations in one complex dimension demonstrate a wide variety of interesting dynamical phenomena. In this paper we consider parabolic bifurcations of families of diffeomorphisms in two complex dimensions. Specifically we consider a two variable family of diffeomorphisms $F_ε: M\to M$ given locally by $$F_ε(x,y) = (x + x^2 + ε^2+ ..., b_εy+...)$$ where $|b_ε|<1$, and the `$...$' terms involve $x$, $y$ and $ε$.

Geodesic flow on the Teichmueller disk of the regular octagon, cutting sequences and octagon continued fractions maps

In this paper we give a geometric interpretation of the renormalization algorithm and of the continued fraction map that we introduced in arxiv:0905.0871 to give a characterization of symbolic sequences for linear flows in the regular octagon. We interpret this algorithm as renormalization on the Teichmueller disk of the octagon and explain the relation with Teichmueller geodesic flow. This connection is analogous to the classical relation between Sturmian sequences, continued fractions and geodesic flow on the modular surface. We use this connection to construct the natural extension and the invariant measure for the continued fraction map. We also define an acceleration of the continued fraction map which has a finite invariant measure.

Homotopy shadowing

Michael Shub proved in 1969 that the topological conjugacy class of an expanding endomorphism on a compact manifold is determined by its homotopy type. In this article we generalize this result in two directions. In one direction we consider certain expanding maps on metric spaces. In a second direction we consider maps which are hyperbolic with respect to product cone fields on a product manifold. A key step in the proof is to establish a shadowing theorem for pseudo--orbits with some additional homotopy information.

Polynomial Diffeomorphisms of C^2: VI. Connectivity of J

Given a polynomial diffeomorphism f: C^2 -> C^2 there is a set $J_f\subset{\bf C}^2$ which we call the Julia set of f. The set $J_f\subset C^2$ plays the role of the Julia set $J\subset{\bf C}$ for a polynomial map of C. In the study of polynomial maps of C a great deal of attention has been paid to the connectivity of the Julia set. The focus of this paper is to investigate the J-connected/J-disconnected dichotomy in the case of polynomial diffeomorphisms of C^2. The Jacobian determinant of f is constant. We make the standing assumption that $|det\ Df|\le 1$ (this can always be achieved by replacing f by $f^{-1}$ if necessary). The set $J^-$ is the set of points with bounded backward orbits. The set $U^+$ is the set of points with unbounded forward orbits. Let p be a periodic saddle point and let $W^u(p)$ be its unstable manifold. The set $W^u(p)$ will be a Riemann surface conformally equivalent to C. Theorem 1. The following are equivalent: 1. For some periodic saddle point p, some component of $W^u(p)\cap U^+$ is simply connected. 2. The set $J^-\cap U^+$ has a lamination by simply connected leaves so that for any periodic saddle point p each component of $W^u(p)\cap U^+$ is a leaf of this lamination. 3. For any periodic saddle point p, each component of $W^u(p)\cap U^+$ is simply connected. If f satisfies one of these conditions we say that f is unstably connected. Theorem 2. The set J is connected if and only if f is unstably connected. These results imply that we can determine the connectivity of J by considering the forward orbits of points in a single unstable manifold. These results open the door to computer exploration of the topology of two dimensional Julia sets and the connectivity locus in the parameter space.

Distribution of periodic points of polynomial diffeomorphisms of C^2

This paper deals with the dynamics of a simple family of holomorphic diffeomorphisms of $\C^2$: the polynomial automorphisms. This family of maps has been studied by a number of authors. We refer to [BLS] for a general introduction to this class of dynamical systems. An interesting object from the point of view of potential theory is the equilibrium measure $μ$ of the set $K$ of points with bounded orbits. In [BLS] $μ$ is also characterized dynamically as the unique measure of maximal entropy. Thus $μ$ is also an equilibrium measure from the point of view of the thermodynamical formalism. In the present paper we give another dynamical interpretation of $μ$ as the limit distribution of the periodic points of $f$.

Polynomial diffeomorphisms of C^2, IV: The measure of maximal entropy and laminar currents

This paper concerns the dynamics of polynomial automorphisms of ${\bf C}^2$. One can associate to such an automorphism two currents $μ^\pm$ and the equilibrium measure $μ=μ^+\wedgeμ^-$. In this paper we study some geometric and dynamical properties of these objects. First, we characterize $μ$ as the unique measure of maximal entropy. Then we show that the measure $μ$ has a local product structure and that the currents $μ^\pm$ have a laminar structure. This allows us to deduce information about periodic points and heteroclinic intersections. For example, we prove that the support of $μ$ coincides with the closure of the set of saddle points. The methods used combine the pluripotential theory with the theory of non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems.
