Singularity, weighted uniform approximation, intersections and rates

A classical argument was introduced by Khintchine in 1926 in order to exhibit the existence of totally irrational singular linear forms in two variables. This argument was subsequently revisited and extended by many authors. For instance, in 1959 Jarnik used it to show that for $n \geq 2$ and for any non-increasing positive $f$ there are totally irrational matrices $A \in M_{m,n}({\mathbb R})$ such that for all large enough $t$ there are $\mathbf{p} \in {\mathbb Z}^m, \mathbf{q} \in {\mathbb Z}^n \smallsetminus \{0\}$ with $$\|\mathbf{q}\| \leq t \ \text{ and } \ \|A \mathbf{q} - \mathbf{p}\| \leq f(t).$$ We denote the collection of such matrices by $\mathrm{UA}^*_{m,n}(f)$. We adapt Khintchine's argument to show that the sets $\mathrm{UA}^*_{m,n}(f)$, and their weighted analogues $\mathrm{UA}^*_{m,n}(f, \mathbf{w})$, intersect many manifolds and fractals, and have strong intersection properties. For example, we show that: When $n \geq 2$, the set $\bigcap_{\mathbf{w}} \mathrm{UA}^*(f, \mathbf{w}) $, where the intersection is over all weights $\mathbf{w}$, is nonempty, and moreover intesects many manifolds and fractals; For $n \geq 2$, there are vectors in ${\mathbb R}^n$ which are simultaneously $k$-singular for every $k$, in the sense of Yu; when $n \geq 3$, $\mathrm{UA}^*_{1,n}(f) + \mathrm{UA}^*_{1,n}(f) = {\mathbb R}^n$. We also obtain new bounds on the rate of singularity which can be attained by column vectors in analytic submanifolds of dimension at least 2 in ${\mathbb R}^n$.

Random walks on tori and normal numbers in self similar sets

We study random walks on a $d$-dimensional torus by affine expanding maps whose linear parts commute. Assuming an irrationality condition on their translation parts, we prove that the Haar measure is the unique stationary measure. We deduce that if $K \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is an attractor of a finite iterated function system of $n\geq 2$ maps of the form $x \mapsto D^{-r_i} x + t_i \ (i=1, \ldots, n)$, where $D$ is an expanding $d\times d$ integer matrix, and is the same for all the maps, and $r_{i} \in\mathbb{N}$, under an irrationality condition on the translation parts $t_i$, almost every point in $K$ (w.r.t. any Bernoulli measure) has an equidistributed orbit under the map $x\mapsto Dx$ (multiplication mod $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$). In the one-dimensional case, this conclusion amounts to normality to base $D$. Thus for example, almost every point in an irrational dilation of the middle-thirds Cantor set is normal to base 3.

Horocycle dynamics: new invariants and eigenform loci in the stratum H(1,1)

We study dynamics of the horocycle flow on strata of translation surfaces, introduce new invariants for ergodic measures, and analyze the interaction of the horocycle flow and real Rel surgeries. We use this analysis to complete and extend results of Calta and Wortman classifying horocycle-invariant measures in the eigenform loci. We classify the orbit-closures and prove that every orbit is equidistributed in its orbit-closure. We also prove equidistribution statements regarding limits of sequences of measures, some of which have applications to counting problems.

New bounds on the density of lattice coverings

We obtain new upper bounds on the minimal density of lattice coverings of Euclidean space by dilates of a convex body K. We also obtain bounds on the probability (with respect to the natural Haar-Siegel measure on the space of lattices) that a randomly chosen lattice L satisfies that L+K is all of space. As a step in the proof, we utilize and strengthen results on the discrete Kakeya problem.

Rel leaves of the Arnoux-Yoccoz surfaces

We analyze the rel leaves of the Arnoux-Yoccoz translation surfaces. We show that for any genus $g \geq 3$, the leaf is dense in the connected component of the stratum $H(g -1 , g -1)$ to which it belongs, and the one-sided imaginary-rel trajectory of the surface is divergent. For one surface on this trajectory, namely the Arnoux-Yoccoz surface itself, the horizontal foliation is invariant under a pseudo-Anosov map (and in particular is uniquely ergodic), but for all other surfaces, the horizontal foliation is completely periodic. The appendix proves a field theoretic result needed for denseness of the leaf: for any $n \geq 3$, the field extension of the rationals obtained by adjoining a root of $X^n-X^{n-1}-\ldots-X-1$ has no totally real subfields other than the rationals.

Random walks on homogeneous spaces and diophantine approximation on fractals

We extend results of Y. Benoist and J.-F. Quint concerning random walks on homogeneous spaces of simple Lie groups to the case where the measure defining the random walk generates a semigroup which is not necessarily Zariski dense, but satisfies some expansion properties for the adjoint action. Using these dynamical results, we study diophantine properties of typical points on some self-similar fractals in R^d. As examples, we show that for any self-similar fractal K in R^d satisfying the open set condition (for instance any translate or dilate of Cantor's middle thirds set or of a Koch snowflake), almost every point with respect to the natural measure on K is not badly approximable. Furthermore, almost every point on the fractal is of generic type, which implies (in the one dimensional case) that its continued fraction expansion contains all finite words with the frequencies predicted by Gauss measure. We prove analogous results for matrix multiplication, and for the case of fractals defined by Mobius transformation.

Stable lattices and the diagonal group

Inspired by work of McMullen, we show that any orbit of the diagonal group in the space of lattices accumulates on the set of stable lattices. As consequences, we settle a conjecture of Ramharter concerning the asymptotic behaviour of the Mordell constant, and reduce Minkowski's conjecture on products of linear forms to a geometric question, yielding two new proofs of the conjecture in dimensions up to 7.

Equivalence relations on separated nets arising from linear toral flows

In 1998, Burago-Kleiner and McMullen independently proved the existence of separated nets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ which are not bi-Lipschitz equivalent (BL) to a lattice. A finer equivalence relation than BL is bounded displacement (BD). Separated nets arise naturally as return times to a section for minimal $\mathbb{R}^d$-actions. We analyze the separated nets which arise via these constructions, focusing particularly on nets arising from linear $\mathbb{R}^d$-actions on tori. We show that generically these nets are BL to a lattice, and for some choices of dimensions and sections, they are generically BD to a lattice. We also show the existence of such nets which are not BD to a lattice.

On problems of Danzer and Gowers and dynamics on the space of closed subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$

Considering the space of closed subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$, endowed with the Chabauty-Fell topology, and the affine action of $SL_d(\mathbb{R})\ltimes\mathbb{R}^d$, we prove that the only minimal subsystems are the fixed points $\{\varnothing\}$ and $\{\mathbb{R}^d\}$. As a consequence we resolve a question of Gowers concerning the existence of certain Danzer sets: there is no set $Y \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ such that for every convex set $\mathcal{C} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ of volume one, the cardinality of $\mathcal{C} \cap Y$ is bounded above and below by nonzero contants independent of $\mathcal{C}$. We also provide a short independent proof of this fact and deduce a quantitative consequence: for every $\varepsilon$-net $N$ for convex sets in $[0,1]^d$ there is a convex set of volume $\varepsilon$ containing at least $Ω(\log\log(1/\varepsilon))$ points of $N$.

Pointwise equidistribution with an error rate and with respect to unbounded functions

Consider $G=\SL_{ d }(\mathbb R)$ and $ Γ=\SL_{ d }(\mathbb Z)$. It was recently shown by the second-named author \cite{s} that for some diagonal subgroups $\{g_t\}\subset G$ and unipotent subgroups $U\subset G$, $g_t$-trajectories of almost all points on all $U$-orbits on $G/Γ$ are equidistributed with respect to continuous compactly supported functions $φ$ on $G/Γ$. In this paper we strengthen this result in two directions: by exhibiting an error rate of equidistribution when $φ$ is smooth and compactly supported, and by proving equidistribution with respect to certain unbounded functions, namely Siegel transforms of Riemann integrable functions on $\R^d$. For the first part we use a method based on effective double equidistribution of $g_t$-translates of $U$-orbits, which generalizes the main result of \cite{km12}. The second part is based on Schmidt's results on counting of lattice points. Number-theoretic consequences involving spiraling of lattice approximations, extending recent work of Athreya, Ghosh and Tseng \cite{agt1}, are derived using the equidistribution result.

The rel leaf and real-rel ray of the Arnoux-Yoccoz surface in genus 3

We analyze the rel leaf of the Arnoux-Yoccoz translation surface in genus 3. We show that the leaf is dense in the stratum $\mathcal{H}(2,2)^{\mathrm{odd}}$ but that the real-rel trajectory of the surface is divergent. On this real-rel trajectory, the vertical foliation of one surface is invariant under a pseudo-Anosov map (and in particular is uniquely ergodic), but the vertical foliations on all other surfaces are completely periodic.

Dense forests and Danzer sets

A set $Y\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$ that intersects every convex set of volume $1$ is called a Danzer set. It is not known whether there are Danzer sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with growth rate $O(T^d)$. We prove that natural candidates, such as discrete sets that arise from substitutions and from cut-and-project constructions, are not Danzer sets. For cut and project sets our proof relies on the dynamics of homogeneous flows. We consider a weakening of the Danzer problem, the existence of uniformly discrete dense forests, and we use homogeneous dynamics (in particular Ratner's theorems on unipotent flows) to construct such sets. We also prove an equivalence between the above problem and a well-known combinatorial problem, and deduce the existence of Danzer sets with growth rate $O(T^d\log T)$, improving the previous bound of $O(T^d\log^{d-1} T)$.

Everything is illuminated

We study geometrical properties of translation surfaces: the finite blocking property, bounded blocking property, and illumination properties. These are elementary properties which can be fruitfully studied using the dynamical behavior of the SL(2,R)-action on the moduli space of translation surfaces. We characterize surfaces with the finite blocking property and bounded blocking property, completing work of the second-named author. Concerning the illumination problem, we also extend results of Hubert-Schmoll-Troubetzkoy, removing the hypothesis that the surface in question is a lattice surface, thus settling a conjecture. Our results crucially rely on the recent breakthrough results of Eskin-Mirzakhani and Eskin-Mirzakhani-Mohammadi, and on related results of Wright.

Invariant measures for solvable groups and diophantine approximation

We show that if $\mathcal{L}$ is a line in the plane containing a badly approximable vector, then almost every point in $\mathcal{L}$ does not admit an improvement in Dirichlet's theorem. Our proof relies on a measure classification result for certain measures invariant under a non-abelian two dimensional group on the homogeneous space $\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{R})/\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$. Using the measure classification theorem, we reprove a result of Shah about planar nondegenerate curves (which are not necessarily analytic), and prove analogous results for the framework of Diophantine approximation with weights. We also show that there are line segments in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which do contain badly approximable points, and for which all points do admit an improvement in Dirichlet's theorem.

Translation surfaces with no convex presentation

We give infinite lists of translations surfaces with no convex presentations. We classify the surfaces in the stratum H(2) which do not have convex presentations, as well as those with no strictly convex presentations. We show that in H(1,1), all surfaces in the eigenform loci E_4, E_9 or E_{16} have no strictly convex presentation, and that the list of surfaces with no convex presentations in H(1,1) - (E_4 union E_9 union E_{16}) is finite and consists of square-tiled surfaces. We prove the existence of non-lattice surfaces without strictly convex presentations in all of the strata H^{(hyp)}(g-1, g-1).

On the Mordell-Gruber spectrum

We investigate the Mordell constant of certain families of lattices, in particular, of lattices arising from totally real fields. We define the almost sure value k_mu of the Mordell constant with respect to certain homogeneous measures on the space of lattices, and establish a strict inequality k_mu < k_nu, when mu,nu are finite and the support of mu is strictly contained in the support of nu. In combination with known results regarding the dynamics of the diagonal group we obtain isolation results as well as information regarding accumulation points of the Mordell-Gruber spectrum, extending previous work of Gruber and Ramharter. One of the main tools we develop is the associated algebra, an algebraic invariant attached to the orbit of a lattice under a block group, which can be used to characterize closed and finite volume orbits.

Rigidity of group actions on homogeneous spaces, III

Consider homogeneous G/H and G/F, for an S-algebraic group G. A lattice Γ acts on the left strictly conservatively. The following rigidity results are obtained: morphisms, factors and joinings defined apriori only in the measurable category are in fact algebraically constrained. Arguing in an elementary fashion we manage to classify all the measurable Φ commuting with the Γ-action: assuming ergodicity, we find they are algebraically defined.

Cohomology classes represented by measured foliations, and Mahler's question for interval exchanges

A translation surface on (S, Σ) gives rise to two transverse measured foliations \FF, \GG on S with singularities in Σ, and by integration, to a pair of cohomology classes [\FF], \, [\GG] \in H^1(S, Σ; \R). Given a measured foliation \FF, we characterize the set of cohomology classes \B for which there is a measured foliation \GG as above with \B = [\GG]. This extends previous results of Thurston and Sullivan. We apply this to two problems: unique ergodicity of interval exchanges and flows on the moduli space of translation surfaces. For a fixed permutation σ\in \mathcal{S}_d, the space \R^d_+ parametrizes the interval exchanges on d intervals with permutation σ. We describe lines \ell in \R^d_+ such that almost every point in \ell is uniquely ergodic. We also show that for σ(i) = d+1-i, for almost every s>0, the interval exchange transformation corresponding to σand (s, s^2, \ldots, s^d) is uniquely ergodic. As another application we show that when k=|Σ| \geq 2, the operation of `moving the singularities horizontally' is globally well-defined. We prove that there is a well-defined action of the group B \ltimes \R^{k-1} on the set of translation surfaces of type (S, Σ) without horizontal saddle connections. Here B \subset \SL(2,\R) is the subgroup of upper triangular matrices.

The set of badly approximable vectors is strongly $C^1$ incompressible

We prove that the countable intersection of $C^1$-diffeomorphic images of certain Diophantine sets has full Hausdorff dimension. For example, we show this for the set of badly approximable vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$, improving earlier results of Schmidt and Dani. To prove this, inspired by ideas of McMullen, we define a new variant of Schmidt's $(α, β)$-game and show that our sets are hyperplane absolute winning (HAW), which in particular implies winning in the original game. The HAW property passes automatically to games played on certain fractals, thus our sets intersect a large class of fractals in a set of positive dimension. This extends earlier results of Fishman to a more general set-up, with simpler proofs.

Lattice actions on the plane revisited

We study the action of a lattice in the group SL(2,R) on the plane. We obtain a formula which simultaneously describes visits of an orbit to either a fixed ball, or an expanding or contracting family of annuli. We also discuss the `shrinking target problem'. Our results are valid for an explicitly described set of initial points: all nonzero vectors in the case of a cocompact lattice, and all vectors satisfying certain diophantine conditions in case SL(2,Z). The proofs combine the method of Ledrappier with effective equidistribution results for the horocycle flow due to Burger, Strombergsson, Forni and Flaminio.

Distribution of lattice orbits on homogeneous varieties

Given a lattice Γin a locally compact group G and a closed subgroup H of G, one has a natural action of Γon the homogeneous space V=H\G. For an increasing family of finite subsets {Γ_T: T>0}, a dense orbit vΓ, v\in V, and compactly supported function ϕon V, we consider the sums S_{ϕ,v}(T)=\sum_{γ\in Γ_T} ϕ(v γ). Understanding the asymptotic behavior of S_{ϕ,v}(T) is a delicate problem which has only been considered for certain very special choices of H, G and {Γ_T}. We develop a general abstract approach to the problem, and apply it to the case when G is a Lie group and either H or G is semisimple. When G is a group of matrices equipped with a norm, we have S_{ϕ,v}(T) \sim \int_{G_T} ϕ(vg) dg, where G_T={g\in G:||g||<T} and Γ_T = G_T \cap Γ. We also show that the asymptotics of S_{ϕ,v}(T) is governed by \int_V ϕdν, where νis an explicit limiting density depending on the choice of v and the norm.
