Tuning biexciton binding and anti-binding in core/shell quantum dots

We use a path integral quantum Monte Carlo method to simulate excitons and biexcitons in core shell nanocrystals with Type-I, II and quasi-Type II band alignments. Quantum Monte Carlo techniques allow for all quantum correlations to be included when determining the thermal ground state, thus producing accurate predictions of biexciton binding. These subtle quantum correlations are found to cause the biexciton to be binding with Type-I carrier localization and strongly anti-binding with Type-II carrier localization, in agreement with experiment for both core shell nanocrystals and dot in rod nanocrystal structures. Simple treatments based on perturbative approaches are shown to miss this important transition in the biexciton binding. Understanding these correlations offers prospects to engineer strong biexciton anti-binding which is crucial to the design of nanocrystals for single exciton lasing applications.

FFLO vs Bose-Fermi mixture in polarized 1D Fermi gas on a Feshbach resonance: a 3-body study

We study the three-fermion problem within a 1D model of a Feshbach resonance in order to gain insight into how the FFLO-like state at small negative scattering lengths evolves into a Bose-Fermi mixture at small positive scattering lengths. The FFLO state possesses an oscillating superfluid correlation function, while in a Bose-Fermi mixture correlations are monotonic. We find that this behavior is is already present at the 3-body level. We present an exact study of the 3-body problem, and gain extra insights by considering worldlines of a path integral Monte-Carlo calculation.

Lateral spatial switching of excitons using vertical electric fields in semiconductor quantum rings

We study the response of exciton complexes in semiconductor quantum rings to vertical electric fields, using path integral quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The interaction of a vertical applied field and the piezoelectric fields of the ring with strongly-correlated excitonic complexes switches excitons between two different lateral locations within the ring. This control should be observable through polarizability and dipole measurements, and, for biexcitons, an energy shift beyond the normal Stark shift.

Path integral study of the role of correlation in exchange coupling of spins in double quantum dots and optical lattices

We explore exchange coupling of a pair of spins in a double dot and in an optical lattice. Our algorithm uses the frequency of exchanges in a bosonic path integral, evaluated with Monte Carlo. This algorithm is simple enough to be a "black box" calculator, yet gives insights into the role of correlation through two-particle probability densities, visualization of instantons, and pair correlation functions. We map the problem to Hubbard model and see that exchange and correlation renormalize the effective parameters, dramatically lowering U at larger separations.
