Butler's Method applied to $\mathbb{Z}_p[C_p\times C_p]$-permutation modules

Let $G$ be a finite $p$-group with normal subgroup $N$ of order $p$. The first author and Zalesskii have previously given a characterization of permutation modules for $\mathbb{Z}_pG$ in terms of modules for $G/N$, but the necessity of their conditions was not known. We apply a correspondence due to Butler to demonstrate the necessity of the conditions, by exhibiting highly non-trivial counterexamples to the claim that if both the $N$-invariants and the $N$-coinvariants of a given lattice $U$ are permutation modules, then so is $U$.

Infinitely generated pseudocompact modules for finite groups and Weiss' Theorem

One of the most beautiful results in the integral representation theory of finite groups is a theorem of A. Weiss that detects a permutation $R$-lattice for the finite $p$-group $G$ in terms of the restriction to a normal subgroup $N$ and the $N$-fixed points of the lattice, where $R$ is a finite extension of the $p$-adic integers. Using techniques from relative homological algebra, we generalize Weiss' Theorem to the class of infinitely generated pseudocompact lattices for a finite $p$-group, allowing $R$ to be any complete discrete valuation ring in mixed characteristic. A related theorem of Cliff and Weiss is also generalized to this class of modules. The existence of the permutation cover of a pseudocompact module is proved as a special case of a more general result. The permutation cover is explicitly described.

Brauer Theory for Profinite Groups

Brauer Theory for a finite group can be viewed as a method for comparing the representations of the group in characteristic 0 with those in prime characteristic. Here we generalize much of the machinery of Brauer theory to the setting of profinite groups. By regarding Grothendieck groups as functors we describe corresponding Grothendieck groups for profinite groups, and generalize the decomposition map, regarded as a natural transformation. We discuss characters and Brauer characters for profinite groups. We give a functorial description of the block theory of a profinite group. We finish with a method for computing the Cartan matrix of a finite group $G$ given the Cartan matrix for a quotient of $G$ by a normal $p$-subgroup.

Gradings, smash products and Galois coverings of a small category

In this paper we develop the theory of coverings of a small connected category B. We show that the category of Galois coverings of B is equivalent to the category of Galois coverings of its fundamental groupoid. Making use of effective gradings of B we explicitly construct Galois coverings through a smash product analogous to the one considered in the linear case. In particular, the universal cover of B can be obtained from its fundamental groupoid.

Modular Representations of Profinite Groups

Our aim is to transfer several foundational results from the modular representation theory of finite groups to the wider context of profinite groups. We are thus interested in profinite modules over the completed group algebra k[[G]] of a profinite group G, where k is a finite field of characteristic p. We define the concept of relative projectivity for a profinite k[[G]]-module. We prove a characterization of finitely generated relatively projective modules analogous to the finite case with additions of interest to the profinite theory. We introduce vertices and sources for indecomposable finitely generated k[[G]]-modules and show that the expected conjugacy properties hold - for sources this requires additional assumptions. Finally we prove a direct analogue of Green's Indecomposability Theorem for finitely generated modules over a virtually pro-p group.
