Solutions of the sDiff(2)Toda equation with SU(2) Symmetry

We present the general solution to the Plebanski equation for an H-space that admits Killing vectors for an entire SU(2) of symmetries, which is therefore also the general solution of the sDiff(2)Toda equation that allows these symmetries. Desiring these solutions as a bridge toward the future for yet more general solutions of the sDiff(2)Toda equation, we generalize the earlier work of Olivier, on the Atiyah-Hitchin metric, and re-formulate work of Babich and Korotkin, and Tod, on the Bianchi IX approach to a metric with an SU(2) of symmetries. We also give careful delineations of the conformal transformations required to ensure that a metric of Bianchi IX type has zero Ricci tensor, so that it is a self-dual, vacuum solution of the complex-valued version of Einstein's equations, as appropriate for the original Plebanski equation.

Bloch Equations and Completely Positive Maps

The phenomenological dissipation of the Bloch equations is reexamined in the context of completely positive maps. Such maps occur if the dissipation arises from a reduction of a unitary evolution of a system coupled to a reservoir. In such a case the reduced dynamics for the system alone will always yield completely positive maps of the density operator. We show that, for Markovian Bloch maps, the requirement of complete positivity imposes some Bloch inequalities on the phenomenological damping constants. For non-Markovian Bloch maps some kind of Bloch inequalities involving eigenvalues of the damping basis can be established as well. As an illustration of these general properties we use the depolarizing channel with white and colored stochastic noise.

Infinite-Dimensional Estabrook-Wahlquist Prolongations for the sine-Gordon Equation

We are looking for the universal covering algebra for all symmetries of a given pde, using the sine-Gordon equation as a typical example for a non-evolution equation. For non-evolution equations, Estabrook-Wahlquist prolongation structures for non-local symmetries depend on the choice of a specific sub-ideal, of the contact module, to define the pde. For each inequivalent such choice we determine the most general solution of the prolongation equations, as sub-algebras of the (infinite-dimensional) algebra of all vector fields over the space of non-local variables associated with the pde, in the style of Vinogradov covering spaces. We show explicitly how previously-known prolongation structures, known to lie within the Kac-Moody algebra, $A_1^{(1)}$, are special cases of these general solutions, although we are unable to identify the most general solutions with previously-studied algebras. We show the existence of gauge transformations between prolongation structures, viewed as determining connections over the solution space, and use these to relate (otherwise) distinct algebras. Faithful realizations of the universal algebra allow integral representations of the prolongation structure, opening up interesting connections with algebras of Toeplitz operators over Banach spaces, an area that has only begun to be explored.
