Finite temperature holographic duals of 2-dimensional BCFTs

We consider holographic duals of $2$-dimensional conformal field theories in the presence of a boundary, interface, defect and/or junction, referred to collectively as BCFTs. In general, the presence of a boundary reduces the $SO(2,2)$ conformal symmetry to $SO(2,1)$ and the dual geometry is realized as a warped product of the form $AdS_2 \times {\cal M}$, where ${\cal M}$ is not compact. In particular, it will contain points where the warp factor of the $AdS_2$ space diverges, leading to asymptotically $AdS_3$ regions. We show that the $AdS_2$ space-time may always be replaced with an $AdS_2$-"black-hole" space-time. We argue the resulting geometry describes the BCFT at finite temperature. To motivate this claim, we compute the entanglement entropy holographically for a segment centered around the defect or ending on the boundary and find agreement with a known universal formula.

M-theory Solutions Invariant under $D(2,1;γ) \oplus D(2,1;γ)$

We simplify and extend the construction of half-BPS solutions to 11-dimensional supergravity, with isometry superalgebra D(2,1;γ) \oplus D(2,1;γ). Their space-time has the form AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 warped over a Riemann surface Σ. It describes near-horizon geometries of M2 branes ending on, or intersecting with, M5 branes along a common string. The general solution to the BPS equations is specified by a reduced set of data (γ, h, G), where γis the real parameter of the isometry superalgebra, and h and G are functions on Σwhose differential equations and regularity conditions depend only on the sign of γ. The magnitude of γenters only through the map of h, G onto the supergravity fields, thereby promoting all solutions into families parametrized by |γ|. By analyzing the regularity conditions for the supergravity fields, we prove two general theorems: (i) that the only solution with a 2-dimensional CFT dual is AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x R^2, modulo discrete identifications of the flat R^2, and (ii) that solutions with γ< 0 cannot have more than one asymptotic higher-dimensional AdS region. We classify the allowed singularities of h and G near the boundary of Σ, and identify four local solutions: asymptotic AdS_4/Z_2 or AdS_7' regions; highly-curved M5-branes; and a coordinate singularity called the "cap". By putting these "Lego" pieces together we recover all known global regular solutions with the above symmetry, including the self-dual strings on M5 for $γ< 0$, and the Janus solution for γ> 0, but now promoted to families parametrized by |γ|. We also construct exactly new regular solutions which are asymptotic to AdS_4/Z_2 for γ< 0, and conjecture that they are a different superconformal limit of the self-dual string.

Near Horizon Geometry of Strings Ending on Intersecting D8/D4-branes

We consider solutions of massive IIA supergravity corresponding to the half-BPS intersection of D8/D4-branes with fundamental strings. The $1+1$-dimensional intersection preserves the symmetry $D(2,1;γ;1) \times SO(4)$. We give a reduction and partial integration of the BPS equations for this symmetry group. We then specialize to the cases of enhanced supersymmetry corresponding to $γ= -1/2,-2$ or $γ= 1$. In the first case, we show that the only solution with enhanced symmetry is given by the $AdS_6$ geometry describing the near horizon geometry of D8/D4-branes in the presence of an O8-plane. In the second case, we identify novel solutions corresponding to fundamental strings ending on D8-branes and a second set of novel solutions corresponding to fundamental strings ending on an O8-plane. In both cases, the fundamental string geometry contains an asymptotically flat region where the string coupling goes to zero. We also show that there are no solutions corresponding to $1+0$-dimensional CFTs, which one may have hoped to construct by suspending fundamental strings between D8-branes.

On Holographic Defect Entropy

We study a number of (3+1)- and (2+1)-dimensional defect and boundary conformal field theories holographically dual to supergravity theories. In all cases the defects or boundaries are planar, and the defects are codimension-one. Using holography, we compute the entanglement entropy of a (hemi-)spherical region centered on the defect (boundary). We define defect and boundary entropies from the entanglement entropy by an appropriate background subtraction. For some (3+1)-dimensional theories we find evidence that the defect/boundary entropy changes monotonically under certain renormalization group flows triggered by operators localized at the defect or boundary. This provides evidence that the g-theorem of (1+1)-dimensional field theories generalizes to higher dimensions.

Exact Half-BPS Flux Solutions in M-theory with $D(2, 1; c'; 0)^2$ Symmetry: Local Solutions

We construct local solutions to 11-dimensional supergravity (or M-theory), which are invariant under the superalgebra $D(2, 1; c'; 0)\oplus D(2, 1; c'; 0)$ for all values of the parameter $c'$. The BPS constraints are reduced to a single linear PDE on a complex function $G$. The PDE was solved in 0806.0605 modulo application of boundary and regularity conditions. The physical fields of the solutions are determined by $c'$, a harmonic function $h$, and the complex function $G$. $ h$ and $G$ are both functions on a 2-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. The harmonic function $ h$ is freely chosen. We obtain the expressions for the metric and the field strength in terms of $G$, $h$, and $c'$ and show that these are indeed valid solutions of the Einstein, Maxwell, and Bianchi equations. Finally we give a construction of one parameter deformations of $AdS_7 \times S^4$ and $AdS_4 \times S^7$ as a function of $c'$.

Holographic Wilson Loops, Dielectric Interfaces, and Topological Insulators

We use holography to study (3+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory (SYM) in the large-Nc and large coupling limits, with a (2+1)-dimensional interface where the Yang-Mills coupling or theta-angle changes value, or "jumps." We consider interfaces that either break all supersymmetry or that preserve half of the N=4 supersymmetry thanks to certain operators localized to the interface. Specifically, we compute the expectation values of a straight timelike Wilson line and of a rectangular Wilson loop in the fundamental representation of SU(Nc). The former gives us the self-energy of a heavy test charge while the latter gives us the potential between heavy test charges. A jumping coupling or theta-angle acts much like a dielectric interface in electromagnetism: a self-energy or potential includes the effects of image charges. N=4 SYM with a jumping theta-angle may also be interpreted as the low-energy effective description of a fractional topological insulator, as we explain in detail. For non-supersymmetric interfaces, we find that the self-energy and potential are qualitatively similar to those in electromagnetism, despite the differences between N=4 SYM and electromagnetism. For supersymmetric interfaces, we find dramatic differences from electromagnetism which depend sensitively on the coupling of the test charge to the adjoint scalars of N=4 SYM. In particular, we find one special case where a test charge has vanishing image charge.

IIB Duals of D=3 N=4 Circular Quivers

We construct the type-IIB $AdS_4\times K$ supergravity solutions which are dual to the three-dimensional ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal field theories that arise as infrared fixed points of circular-quiver gauge theories. These superconformal field theories are labeled by a triple $(ρ,\hat ρ,L)$ subject to constraints, where $ρ$ and $\hat ρ$ are two partitions of a number $N$, and $L$ is a positive integer. We show that in the limit of large $L$ the localized five-branes in our solutions are effectively smeared, and these type-IIB solutions are dual to the near-horizon geometry of M-theory M2-branes at a $\mathbb{C}^4/(Z_k\times Z_{\hat k})$ orbifold singularity. Our IIB solutions resolve the singularity into localized five-brane throats, without breaking the conformal symmetry. The constraints satisfied by the triple $(ρ,\hatρ,L)$, together with the enhanced non-abelian flavour symmetries of the superconformal field theories, are precisely reproduced by the supergravity solutions. As a bonus, we uncover a novel type of "orbifold equivalence" between different quantum field theories and provide quantitative evidence for this equivalence.

Large N Free Energy of 3d N=4 SCFTs and AdS/CFT

We provide a non-trivial check of the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence recently proposed in arXiv:1106.4253 by verifying the GKPW relation in the large N limit. The CFT free energy is obtained from the previous works (arXiv:1105.2551, arXiv:1105.4390) on the S^3 partition function for 3-dimensional N=4 SCFT T[SU(N)]. This is matched with the computation of the type IIB action on the corresponding gravity background. We unexpectedly find that the leading behavior of the free energy at large N is 1/2 N^2 ln N. We also extend our results to richer theories and argue that 1/2 N^2 ln N is the maximal free energy at large N in this class of gauge theories.

Wilson Loops in 5d N=1 SCFTs and AdS/CFT

We consider 1/2-BPS circular Wilson loops in a class of 5d superconformal field theories on S^5. The large N limit of the vacuum expectation values of Wilson loops are computed both by localization in the field theory and by evaluating the fundamental string and D4-brane actions in the dual massive IIA supergravity background. We find agreement in the leading large N limit for a rather general class of representations, including fundamental, anti-symmetric and symmetric representations. For single node theories the match is straightforward, while for quiver theories, the Wilson loop can be in different representations for each node. We highlight the two special cases when the Wilson loop is in either in all symmetric or all anti-symmetric representations. In the anti-symmetric case, we find that the vacuum expectation value factorizes into distinct contributions from each quiver node. In the dual supergravity description, this corresponds to probe D4-branes wrapping internal S^3 cycles. The story is more complicated in the symmetric case and the vacuum expectation value does not exhibit factorization.

Geometry of open strings ending on backreacting D3-branes

We investigate open string theory on backreacting D3-branes using a spacetime approach. We study in detail the half-BPS supergravity solutions describing open strings ending on D3-branes, in the near horizon of the D3-branes. We recover quantitatively several non-trivial features of open string physics including the appearance of D3-brane spikes, the polarization of fundamental strings into D5-branes, and the Hanany-Witten effect. Finally we detail the computation of the gravitational potential between two open strings, and contrast it with the holographic computation of Wilson lines. We argue that the D-brane backreaction has a large influence on the low-energy gravity, which may lead to experimental tests for string theory brane-world scenarios.

Holographic Duals of D=3 N=4 Superconformal Field Theories

We find the warped AdS_4 x K type-IIB supergravity solutions holographically dual to a large family of three dimensional \cN=4 superconformal field theories labeled by a pair (ρ,\hatρ) of partitions of N. These superconformal theories arise as renormalization group fixed points of three dimensional mirror symmetric quiver gauge theories, denoted by T^ρ_{\hat ρ}(SU(N)) and T_ρ^{\hat ρ}(SU(N)) respectively. We give a supergravity derivation of the conjectured field theory constraints that must be satisfied in order for these gauge theories to flow to a non-trivial supersymmetric fixed point in the infrared. The exotic global symmetries of these superconformal field theories are precisely realized in our explicit supergravity description.

Massless D-strings and moduli stabilization in type I cosmology

We consider the cosmological evolution induced by the free energy F of a gas of maximally supersymmetric heterotic strings at finite temperature and weak coupling in dimension D>=4. We show that F, which plays the role of an effective potential, has minima associated to enhanced gauge symmetries, where all internal moduli can be attracted and dynamically stabilized. Using the fact that the heterotic/type I S-duality remains valid at finite temperature and can be applied at each instant of a quasi-static evolution, we find in the dual type I cosmology that all internal NS-NS and RR moduli in the closed string sector and the Wilson lines in the open string sector can be stabilized. For the special case of D=6, the internal volume modulus remains a flat direction, while the dilaton is stabilized. An essential role is played by light D-string modes wrapping the internal manifold and whose contribution to the free energy cannot be omitted, even when the type I string is at weak coupling. As a result, the order of magnitude of the internal radii expectation values on the type I side is (lambda_I alpha')^{1/2}, where lambda_I is the ten-dimensional string coupling. The non-perturbative corrections to the type I free energy can alternatively be described as effects of "thermal E1-instantons", whose worldsheets wrap the compact Euclidean time cycle.

Spin-2 spectrum of defect theories

We study spin-2 excitations in the background of the recently-discovered type-IIB solutions of D'Hoker et al. These are holographically-dual to defect conformal field theories, and they are also of interest in the context of the Karch-Randall proposal for a string-theory embedding of localized gravity. We first generalize an argument by Csaki et al to show that for any solution with four-dimensional anti-de Sitter, Poincare or de Sitter invariance the spin-2 excitations obey the massless scalar wave equation in ten dimensions. For the interface solutions at hand this reduces to a Laplace-Beltrami equation on a Riemann surface with disk topology, and in the simplest case of the supersymmetric Janus solution it further reduces to an ordinary differential equation known as Heun's equation. We solve this equation numerically, and exhibit the spectrum as a function of the dilaton-jump parameter $Δϕ$. In the limit of large $Δϕ$ a nearly-flat linear-dilaton dimension grows large, and the Janus geometry becomes effectively five-dimensional. We also discuss the difficulties of localizing four-dimensional gravity in the more general backgrounds with NS5-brane or D5-brane charge, which will be analyzed in detail in a companion paper.

Superstring cosmology for N_4 = 1 -> 0 superstring vacua

We study the cosmology of perturbative heterotic superstring theory during the radiation-like era for semi-realistic backgrounds with initial $\N=1$ supersymmetry. This analysis is valid for times after the Hagedorn era (or alternatively inflation era) but before the electroweak symmetry breaking transition. We find an attraction to a radiation-like era with the ratio of the supersymmetry breaking scale to temperature stabilized. This provides a dynamical mechanism for setting the supersymmetry breaking scale and its corresponding hierarchy with the Planck scale. For the internal space, we find that orbifold directions never decompactify, while toroidal directions may decompactify only when they are wrapped by certain geometrical fluxes which break supersymmetry. This suggests a mechanism for generating spatial directions during the radiation-like era. Moreover, we show that certain moduli may be stabilized during the radiation-like era with masses near the supersymmetry breaking scale. In addition, the moduli do not dominate at late times, thus avoiding the cosmological moduli problem.

The fate of Newton's law in brane-world scenarios

We consider brane-world scenarios embedded into string theory. We find that the D-brane backreaction induces a large increase in the open string's proper length. Consequently the stringy nature of elementary particles can be detected at distances much larger than the fundamental string scale. As an example, we compute the gravitational potential between two open strings ending on backreacting D3-branes in four-dimensional compactifications of type II string theory. We find that the Newtonian potential receives a correction that goes like 1/r but that is not proportional to the inertial masses of the open strings, implying a violation of the equivalence principle in the effective gravitational theory. This stringy correction is screened by thermal effects when the distance between the strings is greater than the inverse temperature. This suggests new experimental tests for many phenomenological models in type II string theory.

Cosmological Phases of the String Thermal Effective Potential

In a superstring framework, the free energy density, F, can be determined unambiguously at the full string level once supersymmetry is spontaneously broken via geometrical fluxes. We show explicitly that only the moduli associated to the supersymmetry breaking may give relevant contributions. All other spectator moduli μ_I give exponentially suppressed contributions for relatively small (as compared to the string scale) temperature, T, and supersymmetry breaking scale, M. More concisely, for μ_I > T and M, F takes the form F(T,M; μ_I)=F(T,M)+O[exp(- {μ_I\over T}), exp(- {μ_I\over M})] We study the cosmological regime where T and M are below the Hagedorn temperature scale T_H. In this regime, F remains finite for any values of the spectator moduli μ_I. We investigate extensively the case of one spectator modulus μ_d corresponding to R_d, the radius-modulus field of an internal compactified dimension. We show that its thermal effective potential admits five phases, each of which can be described by a distinct but different effective field theory. For late cosmological times, the Universe is attracted to a "Radiation-like evolution" with M(t) ~ T(t)~ 1/a(t)~ t^{-2/d}. The spectator modulus μ(t) is stabilized either to the stringy enhanced symmetry point where R_d=1, or fixed at an arbitrary constant μ_0>T,M. For arbitrary boundary conditions at some initial time, t_E, μ(t) may pass through more than one effective field theory phase before its final attraction.

Janus solutions in M-theory

We present a one-parameter deformation of the AdS_{4} x S^{7} vacuum, which is a regular solution in M-theory, invariant under SO(2,2) x SO(4) x SO(4), and which preserves 16 supersymmetries. The solution corresponds to a holographic realization of a Janus-like interface/defect theory, despite the absence of a dilaton in M-theory. The 2+1-dimensional CFT dual results from the maximally symmetric CFT through the insertion of a dimension 2 operator which is localized along a 1+1-dimensional linear interface/defect, thereby partially breaking the superconformal symmetry. The solution admits a regular ABJM reduction to a quotient solution which is invariant under SO(2,2) x SO(4) x U(1)^2, preserves 12 supersymmetries, and provides a Janus-like interface/defect solution in ABJM theory.

Exact Half-BPS Flux Solutions in M-theory I, Local Solutions

The complete eleven-dimensional supergravity solutions with 16 supersymmetries on manifolds of the form $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3 \times Σ$, with isometry $SO(2,2) \times SO(4) \times SO(4)$, and with either $AdS_4 \times S^7$ or $AdS_7 \times S^4$ boundary behavior, are obtained in exact form. The two-dimensional parameter space $Σ$ is a Riemann surface with boundary, over which the product space $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3$ is warped. By mapping the reduced BPS equations to an integrable system of the sine-Gordon/Liouville type, and then mapping this integrable system onto a linear equation, the general local solutions are constructed explicitly in terms of one harmonic function on $Σ$, and an integral transform of two further harmonic functions on $Σ$. The solutions to the BPS equations are shown to automatically solve the Bianchi identities and field equations for the 4-form field, as well as Einstein's equations. The solutions we obtain have non-vanishing 4-form field strength on each of the three factors of $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3$, and include fully back-reacted M2-branes in $AdS_7 \times S^4$ and M5-branes in $AdS_4 \times S^7$. No interpolating solutions exist with mixed $AdS_4 \times S^7$ and $AdS_7 \times S^4$ boundary behavior. Global regularity of these local solutions, as well as the existence of further solutions with neither $AdS_4 \times S^7$ nor $AdS_7 \times S^4$ boundary behavior will be studied elsewhere.

Integrable systems from supergravity BPS equations

Integrable systems of the sine-Gordon/Liouville type, which arise from reducing the BPS equations for solutions invariant under 16 supersymmetries in Type IIB supergravity and M-theory, are shown to be special cases of an infinite family of integrable systems, parametrized by an arbitrary real function $f$ of a real variable. It is shown that, for each function $f$, this generalized integrable system may be mapped onto a system of linear equations, which in turn may be integrated in terms of the two linearly independent solutions of an ordinary linear second order differential equation which depends only on the function $f$.
