Random Raman lasing

Propagation of light in a highly scattering medium is among the most fascinating optical effect that everyone experiences on an everyday basis and possesses a number of fundamental problems which have yet to be solved. Conventional wisdom suggests that non-linear effects do not play a significant role because the diffusive nature of scattering acts to spread the intensity, dramatically weakening these effects. We demonstrate the first experimental evidence of lasing on a Raman transition in a bulk three-dimensional random media. From a practical standpoint, Raman transitions allow for spectroscopic analysis of the chemical makeup of the sample. A random Raman laser could serve as a bright Raman source allowing for remote, chemically specific, identification of powders and aerosols. Fundamentally, the first demonstration of this new light source opens up an entire new field of study into non-linear light propagation in turbid media, with the most notable application related to non-invasive biomedical imaging.

Hunting for Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking in Theories That S-confine

The s-confining theories are a class of supersymmetric gauge theories with infrared dynamics which are well-understood. Perturbing such theories can give rise to dynamical supersymmetry breaking. We realize simple models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking by perturbing two of the 10 SU(N) s-confining gauge theories by a single trilinear operator. These examples have locally stable vacua with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The first is SU(5) with two generations (consisting of an antisymmetric tensor and an antifundamental) plus two flavors. The second is SU(5) with three generations. The properties of the former vacuum are calculable while those of the latter vacuum are not. We briefly discuss the other SU(N) models.

Prospects of Searches for Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry with h^0 -> χ_1^0 χ_1^0 production in the Time-Delayed Photon + MET Final State at the Tevatron

We propose a search for direct production and decay of the lightest supersymmetric Higgs boson to two neutralinos in gauge mediated models at the Fermilab Tevatron. We focus on the final state where each neutralino decays to photon and light gravitino with a lifetime of order O(ns). In the detector this will show up as a photon with a time-delayed signature and missing E_T. We estimate that using the photon timing system at CDF, and the full 10/fb data sample, that the sensitivity can be within a factor of three in some regions of parameter space for direct production of the Higgs.

General Analysis of Antideuteron Searches for Dark Matter

Low energy cosmic ray antideuterons provide a unique low background channel for indirect detection of dark matter. We compute the cosmic ray flux of antideuterons from hadronic annihilations of dark matter for various Standard Model final states and determine the mass reach of two future experiments (AMS-02 and GAPS) designed to greatly increase the sensitivity of antideuteron detection over current bounds. We consider generic models of scalar, fermion, and massive vector bosons as thermal dark matter, describe their basic features relevant to direct and indirect detection, and discuss the implications of direct detection bounds on models of dark matter as a thermal relic. We also consider specific dark matter candidates and assess their potential for detection via antideuterons from their hadronic annihilation channels. Since the dark matter mass reach of the GAPS experiment can be well above 100 GeV, we find that antideuterons can be a good indirect detection channel for a variety of thermal relic electroweak scale dark matter candidates, even when the rate for direct detection is highly suppressed.

Higgs Boson Decays to Neutralinos in Low-Scale Gauge Mediation

We study the decays of a standard model-like MSSM Higgs boson to pairs of neutralinos, each of which subsequently decays promptly to a photon and a gravitino. Such decays can arise in supersymmetric scenarios where supersymmetry breaking is mediated to us by gauge interactions with a relatively light gauge messenger sector (M_{mess} < 100 TeV). This process gives rise to a collider signal consisting of a pair of photons and missing energy. In the present work we investigate the bounds on this scenario within the minimal supersymmetric standard model from existing collider data. We also study the prospects for discovering the Higgs boson through this decay mode with upcoming data from the Tevatron and the LHC.

Gauge Mediation with a small mu term and light squarks

We consider a solution to the mu problem in the context of Non-Minimal Gauge Mediation with two Singlets and Low-Scale Messengers. This solution reduces tuning associated with the "Little Hierarchy" problem by permitting a naturally small mu term (100-300 GeV) due to small mixing between the Singlets. The smallness of mu also relies crucially on compressing the Gauge Mediated sparticle spectrum resulting in 330-400 GeV squarks. In addition to a small mu term, the theory achieves a Higgs mass > 114.4 GeV through a large Higgs quartic coupling when tanbeta ~ 1.5. The vacua studied are globally stable with all couplings perturbative to the GUT scale. The amount of tuning required to get the correct Electroweak scale is of order 10%, with a similar residual tuning associated with the region of parameter space where the lightest CP-even Higgs mass is above the LEP bound.
