Charge-ordered state satisfying the Anderson condition in LiRh2O4 arising from local dimer order

We report on the charge-ordered structure of LiRh2O4 arising below the metal-insulator transition at 170 K. Structural studies using synchrotron X-rays have revealed that the charge-ordered states of Rh3+ and Rh4+ with dimerization are realized in the low-temperature phase below 170 K. Although the low-temperature ground state resembles that of CuIr2S4, a charge ordering pattern satisfying the Anderson condition is realized in LiRh2O4. Based on structural information such as the short-range order of dimers appearing above the transition temperature and the weakening of the correlation between rhodium one-dimensional chains appearing in the crystal structure, we argue that the Coulomb interaction plays an important role in determining the charge ordering patterns.

Large change of interlayer vibrational coupling with stacking in Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$Te$_{2}$

Stacking variations in quasi-2D materials can have an important influence on material properties, such as changing the topology of the band structure. Unfortunately, the weakness of van der Waals interactions makes it difficult to compute the stacking dependence of properties, and even in a material as simple as graphite the stacking energetics remain unclear. Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$Te$_{2}$ is a material in which three differently-stacked phases are conveniently accessible by temperature changes: $1T^{\prime}$, $T^*_d$, and the reported Weyl semimetal phase $T_d$. The transitions proceed via layer sliding, and the corresponding interlayer shear mode (ISM) is relevant not just for the stacking energetics, but for understanding the relationship between the Weyl physics and structural changes. However, the interlayer interactions of Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$Te$_{2}$ are not well understood, with wide variation in computed properties. We report inelastic neutron scattering of the ISM in a Mo$_{0.91}$W$_{0.09}$Te$_{2}$ crystal. The ISM energies are generally consistent with the linear chain model (LCM), as expected given the weak interlayer interaction, though there are some discrepancies from predicted intensities. However, the interlayer force constants $K_x$ in the $T^*_d$ and $1T^{\prime}$ phases are substantially weaker than that of $T_d$, at 76(3)% and 83(3)%, respectively. Considering that the relative positioning of atoms in neighboring layers is approximately the same regardless of overall stacking, our results suggest that longer-range influences, such as stacking-induced band structure changes, may be responsible for the substantial change in the interlayer vibrational coupling. These findings should elucidate the stacking energetics of Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$Te$_{2}$ and other van der Waals layered materials.

Evolution of the structural transition in Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$Te$_{2}$

The composition dependence of the structural transition between the monoclinic 1T$^{\prime}$ and orthorhombic T$_{d}$ phases in the Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$Te$_{2}$ Weyl semimetal was investigated by elastic neutron scattering on single crystals up to $x \approx 0.54$. First observed in MoTe$_{2}$, the transition from T$_{d}$ to 1T$^{\prime}$ is accompanied by an intermediate pseudo-orthorhombic phase, T$_{d}^{*}$. Upon doping with W, the T$_{d}^{*}$ phase vanishes by $x \approx 0.34$. Above this concentration, a phase coexistence behavior with both T$_{d}$ and 1T$^{\prime}$ is observed instead. The interlayer in-plane positioning parameter $δ$, which relates to the 1T$^{\prime}$ $β$ angle, decreases with temperature as well as with W substitution, likely due to strong anharmonicity in the interlayer interactions. The temperature width of the phase coexistence remains almost constant up to $x \approx 0.54$, in contrast to the broadening reported under pressure.

T$_{d}$ to 1T$^{\prime}$ structural phase transition in WTe$_{2}$ Weyl semimetal

Elastic neutron scattering on a single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction measurements were carried out to investigate how the crystal structure evolves as a function of temperature in the Weyl semimetal WTe$_{2}$. A sharp transition from the low-temperature orthorhombic phase (T$_{d}$) to the high-temperature monoclinic phase (1T$^{\prime}$) was observed at ambient pressure in the single crystal near $\sim$565 K. Unlike in MoTe$_{2}$, the solid-solid transition from T$_{d}$ to 1T$^{\prime}$ occurs without the cell doubling of the intermediate T$_{d}^{*}$ phase with AABB (or ABBA) layer stacking. In powders however, the thermal transition from the T$_{d}$ to the 1T$^{\prime}$ phase is broadened and a two phase coexistence was observed until 700K, well above the structural transition.

Nodeless pairing in superconducting copper-oxide monolayer films on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ

The pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates remains the biggest unresolved mystery in condensed matter physics. To solve the problem, one of the most effective approaches is to investigate directly the superconducting CuO2 layers. Here, by growing CuO2 monolayer films on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ substrates, we identify two distinct and spatially separated energy gaps centered at the Fermi energy, a smaller U-like gap and a larger V-like gap on the films, and study their interactions with alien atoms by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The newly discovered U-like gap exhibits strong phase coherence and is immune to scattering by K, Cs and Ag atoms, suggesting its nature as a nodeless superconducting gap in the CuO2 layers, whereas the V-like gap agrees with the well-known pseudogap state in the underdoped regime. Our results support an s-wave superconductivity in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, which, we propose, originates from the modulation-doping resultant two-dimensional hole liquid confined in the CuO2 layers.

Phonon coupling to dynamic short-range polar order in a relaxor ferroelectric near the morphotropic phase boundary

We report neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystal PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ doped with 32\% PbTiO$_{3}$, a relaxor ferroelectric that lies close to the morphotropic phase boundary. When cooled under an electric field $\mathbf{E} \parallel$ [001] into tetragonal and monoclinic phases, the scattering cross section from transverse acoustic (TA) phonons polarized parallel to $\mathbf{E}$ weakens and shifts to higher energy relative to that under zero-field-cooled conditions. Likewise, the scattering cross section from transverse optic (TO) phonons polarized parallel to $\mathbf{E}$ weakens for energy transfers $4 \leq \hbar ω\leq 9$ meV. However, TA and TO phonons polarized perpendicular to $\mathbf{E}$ show no change. This anisotropic field response is similar to that of the diffuse scattering cross section, which, as previously reported, is suppressed when polarized parallel to $\mathbf{E}$, but not when polarized perpendicular to $\mathbf{E}$. Our findings suggest that the lattice dynamics and dynamic short-range polar correlations that give rise to the diffuse scattering are coupled.

Surface-state-dominated transport in crystals of the topological crystalline insulator In-doped Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te

Three-dimensional topological insulators and topological crystalline insulators represent new quantum states of matter, which are predicted to have insulating bulk states and spin-momentum-locked gapless surface states. Experimentally, it has proven difficult to achieve the high bulk resistivity that would allow surface states to dominate the transport properties over a substantial temperature range. Here we report a series of indium-doped Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Te compounds that manifest huge bulk resistivities together with strong evidence of topological surface states, based on thickness-dependent transport studies and magnetoresistance measurements. For these bulk-insulating materials, the surface states determine the resistivity for temperatures approaching 30 K.

Neutron inelastic scattering measurements of low energy phonons in the multiferroic BiFeO3

We present neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the low-energy phonons in single crystal BiFeO3. The dispersions of the three acoustic phonon modes (LA along [100], TA1 along [010] and TA2 along [110]) and two low energy optic phonon modes (LO and TO1) have been mapped out between 300 K and 700 K. Elastic constants are extracted from the phonon measurements. The energy linewidths of both TA phonons at the zone boundary clearly broaden when the system is warmed toward the magnetic ordering temperature TN = 640 K. This suggests that the magnetic and low-energy lattice dynamics in this multiferroic material are coupled.
