Scalable Estimation for Structured Additive Distributional Regression

Recently, fitting probabilistic models have gained importance in many areas but estimation of such distributional models with very large data sets is a difficult task. In particular, the use of rather complex models can easily lead to memory-related efficiency problems that can make estimation infeasible even on high-performance computers. We therefore propose a novel backfitting algorithm, which is based on the ideas of stochastic gradient descent and can deal virtually with any amount of data on a conventional laptop. The algorithm performs automatic selection of variables and smoothing parameters, and its performance is in most cases superior or at least equivalent to other implementations for structured additive distributional regression, e.g., gradient boosting, while maintaining low computation time. Performance is evaluated using an extensive simulation study and an exceptionally challenging and unique example of lightning count prediction over Austria. A very large dataset with over 9 million observations and 80 covariates is used, so that a prediction model cannot be estimated with standard distributional regression methods but with our new approach.

Geometric interpretation of the CHSH inequality of nonmaximally entangled states

We show that for pure and mixed states the problem of maximizing the correlation measure in the CHSH inequality reduces to maximizing the perimeter of a parallelogram enclosed by an ellipse characterized by the entanglement contained in the bipartite system. Since our geometrical description is also valid for a non-maximally entangled state we can determine the corresponding optimal measurements.

The geometric link between Hardy and Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt

We show that the Hardy nonlocality condition is equivalent to the violation of the CHSH inequality with additional constraints. We adapt the geometrical optimization of the violation of the CHSH inequality to these additional constraints and show that the Hardy condition is equivalent to optimizing the length difference of two sides in a triangle. Furthermore, we discuss the effects of the different constraints.

Multipath Correlation Interference and Controlled-NOT Gate Simulation with a Thermal Source

We theoretically demonstrate a counter-intuitive phenomenon in optical interferometry with a thermal source: the emergence of second-order interference between two pairs of correlated optical paths even if the time delay imprinted by each path in one pair with respect to each path in the other pair is much larger than the source coherence time. This fundamental effect could be useful for experimental simulations of small-scale quantum circuits and of $100\%$-visibility correlations typical of entangled states of a large number of qubits, with possible applications in high-precision metrology and imaging. As an example, we demonstrate the polarization-encoded simulation of the operation of the quantum logic gate known as controlled-NOT gate.
