Heavy quarks at finite temperature

New incarnations of heavy-ion collision experiments are turning our attention to hard processes and a more fine-grained resolution of the QGP. In this endeavor quarkonia or open heavy flavors turn out to be versatile probes, which are usually described through models based on perturbative QCD, AdS, and effective field theories. The lattice provides nonperturbative input and constraints to such models.\newline In-medium bottomonia, the complex static quark-antiquark potential, and the heavy-quark momentum diffusion coefficient are key quantities where lattice gauge theory has recently achieved significant progress with impact for heavy-ion phenomenology. We review these lattice results, relate them to phenomenological applications, and close with an outlook.

QTRAJ 1.0: A Lindblad equation solver for heavy-quarkonium dynamics

We introduce an open-source package called QTraj that solves the Lindblad equation for heavy-quarkonium dynamics using the quantum trajectories algorithm. The package allows users to simulate the suppression of heavy-quarkonium states using externally-supplied input from 3+1D hydrodynamics simulations. The code uses a split-step pseudo-spectral method for updating the wave-function between jumps, which is implemented using the open-source multi-threaded FFTW3 package. This allows one to have manifestly unitary evolution when using real-valued potentials. In this paper, we provide detailed documentation of QTraj 1.0, installation instructions, and present various tests and benchmarks of the code.

Static quark anti-quark interactions at non-zero temperature from lattice QCD

We present results on the in-medium interactions of static quark anti-quark pairs using realistic 2+1 HISQ flavor lattice QCD. Focus is put on the extraction of spectral information from Wilson line correlators in Coulomb gauge using four complementary methods. Our results indicate that on HISQ lattices, the position of the dominant spectral peak associated with the real-part of the interquark potential remains unaffected by temperature. This is in contrast to prior work in quenched QCD and we present follow up comparisons to newly generated quenched ensembles.

Static quark anti-quark interactions at non-zero temperature from lattice QCD

We study the interactions of a static quark antiquark pair at non-zero temperature using realistic 2+1 flavor lattice QCD calculations. The study consists of two parts: the first investigates the properties of Wilson line correlators in Coulomb gauge and compares to predictions of hard-thermal loop perturbation theory. As a second step we extract the spectral functions underlying the correlators using four conceptually different methods: spectral function fits, a HTL inspired fit for the correlation function, Padé rational approximation and the Bayesian BR spectral reconstruction. We find that our high statistics Euclidean lattice data are amenable to different hypotheses for the shapes of the spectral function and we compare the implications of each analysis method for the existence and properties of a well defined ground state spectral peak.

Strong coupling constant from moments of quarkonium correlators revisited

We revisit previous determination of the strong coupling constant from moments of quarkonium correlators in (2+1)-flavor QCD. We use previously calculated moments obtained with Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) action for five different quark masses and several lattice spacings. We perform a careful continuum extrapolations of the moments and from the comparison of these to the perturbative result we determine the QCD Lambda parameter, $Λ_{\overline{MS}}^{n_f=3}=332 \pm 17 \pm 2(scale)$ MeV. This corresponds to $α_s^{n_f=5}(μ=M_Z)=0.1177(12)$.

Bottomonium suppression in an open quantum system using the quantum trajectories method

We solve the Lindblad equation describing the Brownian motion of a Coulombic heavy quark-antiquark pair in a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma using the highly efficient Monte Carlo wave-function method. The Lindblad equation has been derived in the framework of pNRQCD and fully accounts for the quantum and non-Abelian nature of the system. The hydrodynamics of the plasma is realistically implemented through a 3+1D dissipative hydrodynamics code. We compute the bottomonium nuclear modification factor and compare with the most recent LHC data. The computation does not rely on any free parameter, as it depends on two transport coefficients that have been evaluated independently in lattice QCD. Our final results, which include late-time feed down of excited states, agree well with the available data from LHC 5.02 TeV PbPb collisions.

Lattice calculation of transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ in pure gluon plasma and (2+1)-flavor QCD plasma

The transport coefficient $\hat{q}$ is a leading coefficient that controls the modification of the hard parton traversing QGP, and hence, responsible for the suppression of the high transverse momentum (transverse to the beam direction) charged-hadrons in heavy-ion collisions. In this article, we present the first unquenched lattice QCD calculation of $\hat{q}$. The calculation is carried out using (2+1)-flavor of quarks, using the highly improved staggered quark action (HISQ) and tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action. The calculation is performed in a wide range of temperatures, ranging from 200 MeV $<T<$ 800 MeV using MILC code package. We considered a leading-order process where a hard parton scatters off the glue field of a thermal QCD medium by exchanging a Glauber gluon (whose transverse momentum is larger than its longitudinal components). The hard scale associated with the jet parton allows the coupling of the gluon to that parton to be treated in perturbation theory. The coupling of the gluon to the medium is treated non-perturbatively. This non-perturbative part is expressed in terms of a non-local (two-point) field-strength-field-strength operator product which can be Taylor expanded after analytic continuation to the deep Euclidean region. Such an expansion allows us to write $\hat{q}$ in terms of a series of local operators, which are suppressed by factors of the hard parton energy. The calculated $\hat{q}$ and its temperature dependence demonstrates reasonable agreement with the phenomenological extraction carried out by the JET collaboration.

Strong coupling constant and quark masses from lattice QCD

We review lattice determinations of the charm and bottom quark masses and the strong coupling constant obtained by different methods. We explain how effective field theory approaches, such as Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD), potential Non-Relativistic QCD (pNRQCD), Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) and Heavy Meson rooted All-Staggered Chiral Perturbation Theory (HMrAS$χ$PT) can help in these determinations. After critically reviewing different lattice results we determine lattice world averages for the strong coupling constant, $α_s(M_Z,N_f{=}5)=0.11803^{+0.00047}_{-0.00068}$, as well as for the charm quark mass, $m_c(m_c,N_f{=}4)=1.2735(35)$ GeV, and the bottom quark mass, $m_b(m_b,N_f{=}5)=4.188(10)$ GeV. The above determinations are more precise than the ones obtained by Particle Data Group (PDG).

Correlation functions with Karsten-Wilczek fermions

The Karsten-Wilczek action describes two chiral fermions but breaks the symmetries under both charge conjugation ($ \widehat{C}) $ and time reflection ($ \widehatΘ $) explicitly, though invariance under $ \widehat{CΘ} $ and a mirror fermion symmetry $ \widehat{TΘ} $ are maintained. These proceedings outline how the action's symmetries and the presence of the second fermion emerge in mesonic correlation functions. The residual symmetries explain the non-observation of broken time-reflection symmetry in a class of mesonic correlation functions. Time-reflection symmetry is enforced for correlation functions that are manifestly invariant under $ \widehat{C} $ or $ \widehat{T} $. Due to contributions from the second fermion, oscillating contributions arise in some mesonic correlation functions. A second condition for non-perturbative tuning of the relevant counterterm is obtained from these oscillations. Both non-perturbative tuning conditions are independent and agree within errors. Due to contributions from the second fermion, additional pseudoscalar states are observed in non-standard channels. Mass splittings between these additional states and the Goldstone boson vanish as $ \mathcal{O}(a^2) $.

Polyakov loop correlators and cyclic Wilson loop from lattice QCD

We discuss color screening in 2+1 flavor QCD in terms of free energies of a static quark-antiquark pair. Thermal modifications of long distance correlations in quark-antiquark systems are studied in terms of static meson correlators. We calculate the Polyakov loop correlator, the color-singlet Wilson line correlator in Coulomb gauge and the cyclic Wilson loop on lattices using the HISQ/Tree action and almost physical quark mases with $N_τ= 4, 6, 8, 10, 12$. We present results in the continuum limit for temperatures up to $T \lesssim 650$ MeV and discuss the linear divergence of the cyclic Wilson loop.

QCD with Flavored Minimally Doubled Fermions

I discuss minimally doubled fermions fermions as an ultra-local formulation on the lattice for sea quarks that realize a non-singlet chiral symmetry. I introduce a non-singlet mass term for Karsten-Wilczek fermions and identify the appropriate representation of the SU(2) flavor group at finite lattice spacing. I present an algebraic proof that the symmetry of the quark determinant under charge conjugation and reflections of the Euclidean axes is preserved for Karsten-Wilczek fermions as sea quarks. Finally, I discuss how the flavor components in meson correlation functions with Karsten-Wilczek fermions emerge naturally and I show how taste-breaking can be avoided without fine tuning.

Single quark entropy and the Polyakov loop

We study Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) with 2+1 flavors with almost physical quark masses using the highly improved staggered quark action (HISQ). We calculate the Polyakov loop in a wide temperature range, obtain the free energy and the entropy of a single static quark and discuss the QCD crossover region in detail. We show that the entropy has a peak close to the chiral crossover and consider the consequences for the deconfinement aspects of the crossover phenomena. We study the renormalized Polyakov loop susceptibilities and place them into the context of the crossover. We also obtain a quantitative result for the onset of weak coupling behavior at high temperatures.

Numerical studies of Minimally Doubled Fermions

We have performed the first numerical study of minimally doubled fermions of the Karsten-Wilczek class in the quenched approximation. This requires fixing the counterterms, which arise due to hypercubic symmetry breaking induced by the Karsten-Wilczek term. Non-perturbative renormalisation criteria are formulated after a detailed study of the parameter dependence of mesonic observables. Minimisation of the mass anisotropy of the pseudoscalar ground state fixes non-perturbative renormalisation conditions for the counterterm coefficients. These anisotropies are mapped out by probing different euclidean components of the transfer matrix through calculations of the pseudoscalar ground state mass in different directions. The chiral behaviour of the pseudoscalar ground state is studied with the tuned Karsten-Wilczek action for multiple lattice spacings. Light pseudoscalar masses ($ M_{PS} \lesssim 250\,MeV $) were achieved in the quenched approximation without encountering exceptional configurations. The presence of quenched chiral logarithms is studied under the tentative assumption of Goldstone Boson-like behaviour.
