Static quark anti-quark interactions at non-zero temperature from lattice QCD

We present results on the in-medium interactions of static quark anti-quark pairs using realistic 2+1 HISQ flavor lattice QCD. Focus is put on the extraction of spectral information from Wilson line correlators in Coulomb gauge using four complementary methods. Our results indicate that on HISQ lattices, the position of the dominant spectral peak associated with the real-part of the interquark potential remains unaffected by temperature. This is in contrast to prior work in quenched QCD and we present follow up comparisons to newly generated quenched ensembles.

Static quark anti-quark interactions at non-zero temperature from lattice QCD

We study the interactions of a static quark antiquark pair at non-zero temperature using realistic 2+1 flavor lattice QCD calculations. The study consists of two parts: the first investigates the properties of Wilson line correlators in Coulomb gauge and compares to predictions of hard-thermal loop perturbation theory. As a second step we extract the spectral functions underlying the correlators using four conceptually different methods: spectral function fits, a HTL inspired fit for the correlation function, Padé rational approximation and the Bayesian BR spectral reconstruction. We find that our high statistics Euclidean lattice data are amenable to different hypotheses for the shapes of the spectral function and we compare the implications of each analysis method for the existence and properties of a well defined ground state spectral peak.

Interaction potential between heavy $Q \bar{Q}$ in color octet configuration in QGP

We investigate the interaction between a heavy quark-antiquark pair in color octet configuration in gluon plasma. We calculate nonperturbatively an effective thermal potential for such a pair through the study of the correlation function of a hybrid state with $Q \bar{Q}$ octet and an adjoint gluon source in the static limit. We discuss the extraction of an octet potential, and present results for the effective thermal potential between octet $Q \bar{Q}$ pair in gluon plasma for moderately high temperatures $\lesssim 2 T_c$. The implications of our result are discussed.

Nonperturbative potential for study of quarkonia in QGP

A thermal potential can be defined to facilitate understanding the behavior of quarkonia in quark-gluon plasma. A nonperturbative evaluation of this potential from lattice QCD is difficult, as it involves real-time corelation function, and has often involved the use of Bayesian analysis, with its associated systematics. In this work we show that using the properties of the static quarkonia thermal correlation functions, one can directly extract a thermal potential for quarkonia from Euclidean Wilson loop data. This leads to a controlled extraction, and allows us to judge the suitability of various model potentials. We also discuss the phenomenology of quarkonia in the gluonic plasma.

Disorder-induced two-step melting of vortex matter in Co-intercalated NbSe$_2$ single crystals

Disorder induced melting, where the increase in positional entropy created by random pinning sites drives the order-disorder transition in a periodic solid, provides an alternate route to the more conventional thermal melting. Here, using real space imaging of the vortex lattice through scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we show that in the presence of weak pinning, the vortex lattice in a type II superconductor disorders through two distinct topological transitions. Across each transition, we separately identify metastable states formed through superheating of the low temperature state or supercooling of the high temperature state. Comparing crystals with different levels of pinning we conclude that the two-step melting is fundamentally associated with the presence of random pinning which generates topological defects in the ordered vortex lattice.
