Spin-orbit coupling controlled two-dimensional magnetism in chromium trihalides

CrX$_3$ (X = Cl, Br, I) have the same crystal structure and Hamiltonian but different ligand spin-orbit coupling (SOC) constant $λ_X$, providing excellent material platform exploring for exotic two-dimensional (2D) spin orders. Their microscopic mechanism underlying 2D spin physics remain unestablished, along with experimental corroboration of Kitaev exchange interaction, central to realizing topological quantum spin liquids. Finding direct evidence for Kitaev interaction and determining its value has been an essential but formidable challenge in Kitaev physics. Here we report the direct Kitaev interaction signature in magnetic anisotropy measured by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy. We present measured values of Heisenberg $J$, Kitaev $K$, and off-diagonal symmetric $Γ$ exchange interactions in CrX$_3$ determined using FMR and exact diagonalization. $K$ and $Γ$ exhibit dominant dependencies on $λ_X$, indicating its central role in 2D magnetism. Our study provides a foundation for designing 2D magnetic materials exhibiting novel behaviors by tuning intrinsic material parameters such as SOC.

Subterahertz spin pumping from an insulating antiferromagnet

Spin-transfer torque and spin Hall effects combined with their reciprocal phenomena, spin-pumping and inverse spin Hall (ISHE) effects, enable the reading and control of magnetic moments in spintronics. The direct observation of these effects remains elusive in antiferromagnetic-based devices. We report sub-terahertz spin-pumping at the interface of a uniaxial insulating antiferromagnet MnF2 and platinum. The measured ISHE voltage arising from spin-charge conversion in the platinum layer depends on the chirality of the dynamical modes of the antiferromagnet, which is selectively excited and modulated by the handedness of the circularly polarized sub-THz irradiation. Our results open the door to the controlled generation of coherent pure spin currents at THz frequencies.

Fundamental Spin Interactions Underlying the Magnetic Anisotropy in the Kitaev Ferromagnet CrI$_3$

We lay the foundation for determining the microscopic spin interactions in two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets by combining angle-dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments on high quality CrI$_3$ single crystals with theoretical modeling based on symmetries. We discover that the Kitaev interaction is the strongest in this material with $K \sim -5.2$ meV, 25 times larger than the Heisenberg exchange $J \sim -0.2$ meV, and responsible for opening the $\sim$5 meV gap at the Dirac points in the spin-wave dispersion. Furthermore, we find that the symmetric off-diagonal anisotropy $Γ\sim -67.5$ $μ$eV, though small, is crucial for opening a $\sim$0.3 meV gap in the magnon spectrum at the zone center and stabilizing ferromagnetism in the 2D limit. The high resolution of the FMR data further reveals a $μ$eV-scale quadrupolar contribution to the $S=3/2$ magnetism. Our identification of the underlying exchange anisotropies opens paths toward 2D ferromagnets with higher $T_\text{C}$ as well as magnetically frustrated quantum spin liquids based on Kitaev physics.

Rabi oscillations of solitons in spin-chains: a new route to quantum computation and communication

We provide the first evidence for coherence and Rabi oscillations of spin-solitons pinned by the local breaking of translational symmetry in isotropic Heisenberg chains (simple antiferromagnetic-Néel or spin-Peierls).We show that these correlated spin systems made of hundreds of coupled spin bear an overall spin S=1/2 and can be manipulated as a single spin. This is clearly contrary to all known spin-qubits which are paramagnetic centres, highly diluted to prevent decoherence. These results offer an alternative approach for spin-qubits paving the way for the implementation of a new type of quantum computer.

Softened magnetic excitations in the s = 3/2 distorted triangular antiferromagnet alpha-CaCr2O4

The spin dynamics and magnetic excitations of the slightly distorted triangular s = 3/2 system alpha-CaCr2O4 are investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy and electron spin resonance (ESR) to elucidate its peculiar magnetic properties. Two-magnon excitations in circular RL symmetry show a multi-maximum structure with a dominant spectral weight at low energies. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth is described by a critical broadening DeltaHpp(T) ~ (T - T_N)^{-p} with the exponent p = 0.30(3) - 0.38(5) for temperatures above T_N = 42.6 K. The exponent is much smaller than that of other s = 3/2 triangular lattices. This is ascribed to soft roton-like modes, indicative of the instability of a helical 120° phase. As an origin we discuss a complex spin topology formed by four inequivalent nearest neighbor and sizable next-nearest neighbor interactions.

Initializing, manipulating and storing quantum information with bismuth dopants in silicon

A prerequisite for exploiting spins for quantum data storage and processing is long spin coherence times. Phosphorus dopants in silicon (Si:P) have been favoured as hosts for such spins because of measured electron spin coherence times (T2) longer than any other electron spin in the solid state: 14 ms at 7 K. Heavier impurities such as bismuth in silicon (Si:Bi) could be used in conjunction with Si:P for quantum information proposals that require two separately addressable spin species. However, the question of whether the incorporation of the much less soluble Bi into Si leads to defect species that destroy coherence has not been addressed. Here we show that schemes involving Si:Bi are indeed feasible as the electron spin coherence time T2 exceeds 1 ms at 10 K. We polarized the Si:Bi electrons and hyperpolarized the I=9/2 nuclear spin of 209Bi, manipulating both with pulsed magnetic resonance. The larger nuclear spin means that a Si:Bi dopant provides a 20-dimensional Hilbert space rather than the four dimensional Hilbert space of an I=1/2 Si:P dopant.

Efficient Dynamic Nuclear Polarization at High Magnetic Fields

By applying a new technique for dynamic nuclear polarization involving simultaneous excitation of electronic and nuclear transitions, we have enhanced the nuclear polarization of the nitrogen nuclei in 15N@C60 by a factor of 1000 at a fixed temperature of 3 K and a magnetic field of 8.6 T, more than twice the maximum enhancement reported to date. This methodology will allow the initialization of the nuclear qubit in schemes exploiting N@C60 molecules as components of a quantum information processing device.
