Pinched weights and Duality Violation in QCD Sum Rules: a critical analysis

We analyze the so-called pinched weights, that are generally thought to reduce the violation of quark-hadron duality in Finite-Energy Sum Rules. After showing how this is not true in general, we explain how to address this question for the LR correlator and any particular pinched weight taking advantage of our previous work [1], where the possible high-energy behavior of the LR spectral function was studied. In particular we show that the use of pinched weights allows to determine with high accuracy the dimension six and eight contributions in the operator product expansion, O6=(-4.3^[+0.9}_{-0.7})*10^-3 GeV^6 and O8=(-7.2^{+4.2}_{-5.3})*10^-3 GeV^8.

Violation of Quark-Hadron Duality and Spectral Chiral Moments in QCD

We analyze the spectral moments of the V-A two-point correlation function. Using all known short-distance constraints and the most recent experimental data from tau decays, we determine the lowest spectral moments, trying to assess the uncertainties associated with the so-called violations of quark-hadron duality. We have generated a large number of "acceptable" spectral functions, satisfying all conditions, and have used them to extract the wanted hadronic parameters through a careful statistical analysis. We obtain accurate values for the ChPT couplings L10 and C87, and a realistic determination of the dimension six and eight contributions in the operator product expansion, O6=(-5.4^{+3.6}_{-1.6})*10^-3 GeV^6 and O8=(-8.9^{+12.6}_{-7.4})*10^-3 GeV^8, showing that the duality-violation effects have been usually underestimated in previous literature.

Hadronic Light-by-Light Scattering Contribution to the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment

We review the current status of theoretical calculations of the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Different approaches and related issues such as OPE constraints and large breaking of chiral symmetry are discussed. Combining results of different models with educated guesses on the errors we come to the estimate $$a^{\rm HLbL}=(10.5\pm 2.6)\times 10^{-10}.$$ The text is prepared as a contribution to the {\it Glasgow White Paper on the present status of the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment}.

Determination of the Chiral Couplings L_10 and C_87 from Semileptonic Tau Decays

Using recent precise hadronic tau-decay data on the V-A spectral function, and general properties of QCD such as analyticity, the operator product expansion and chiral perturbation theory, we get accurate values for the QCD chiral order parameters L_10^r(M_rho) and C_87^r(M_rho). These two low-energy constants appear at order p^4 and p^6, respectively, in the chiral perturbation theory expansion of the V-A correlator. At order p^4 we obtain L_10^r(M_rho) = -(5.22\pm 0.06)10^{-3}. Including in the analysis the two-loop (order p^6) contributions, we get L_10^r(M_rho) = -(4.06\pm 0.39)10^{-3} and C_87^r(M_rho) = (4.89\pm 0.19)10^{-3}GeV^{-2}. In the SU(2) chiral effective theory, the corresponding low-energy coupling takes the value \overline l_5 = 13.30 \pm 0.11 at order p^4, and \overline l_5 = 12.24 \pm 0.21 at order p^6.

Charged Kaon K^+ --> 3 pi CP Violating Asymmetries vs epsilon'_K / epsilon_K

We present the next-to-leading order full results in Chiral Perturbation Theory for the charged Kaon K --> 3 pi slope g CP violating asymmetries. We discuss the constraints that a measurement of these asymmetries would impose on the Standard Model results of epsilon_K' and search for new physics. We also study the kind of information that such measurement can provide on Im G_8, Im (e^2 G_E) and higher order weak couplings.

Extraction of m_s and |V_us| from Hadronic Tau Decays

We review recent work to determine the strange quark mass m_s as well as the proposal to determine |V_{us}| using hadronic tau decay data. The recent update of the strange spectral function by OPAL and their moments of the invariant mass distribution are employed. Our results are |V_us|=0.2208 +- 0.0034 and m_s (2 GeV)=81 +- 22 MeV. Our result is already competitive to the standard extraction of |V_us| from K_e3 decays and to the new proposals to determine it. The error on V_us is dominated by experiment and will be eventually much improved by the B-factories hadronic tau data. Ultimately, a simultaneous fit of both m_s and |V_us| to a set of moments of the hadronic tau decays invariant mass distribution will provide one of the most accurate determinations of these Standard Model parameters.

Matching the Electroweak Penguins $Q_7$, $Q_8$ and Spectral Correlators

Exact analytical expressions for the $ΔS=1$ coupling $\im G_E$ in terms of observable spectral functions are given. This coupling determines the size of the $ΔI=3/2$ contribution to $ε'$. We show analytically how the scheme-dependence and scale dependences vanish to all orders in $1/N_c$ and NLO in $α_S$ explicitly both for $Q_7$ and $Q_8$. Numerical results are derived for both $Q_7$ and $Q_8$ from the $τ$-data and known results on the scalar spectral functions. In particular we study the effect of all higher dimension operators. The coefficients of the leading operators in the OPE of the needed correlators are derived to NLO in $α_S$.

Strange Quark Mass Determination from Cabibbo-Suppressed Tau Decays

We present a general analysis of SU(3) breaking effects in the semi-inclusive tau hadronic width. The recent ALEPH measurements of the inclusive Cabibbo--suppressed decay width of the tau and several moments of its invariant mass distribution are used to determine the value of the strange quark mass. We obtain, in the MS scheme, m_s(M_τ^2) = (119\pm 24) MeV to O(α_s^3), which corresponds to m_s (1 GeV^2) = (164 \pm 33) MeV, m_s(4 GeV^2) = (114\pm 23) MeV .

Hadronic Light-by-Light Contribution to the Muon $g-2$

Mistake in FORTRAN program corrected. The numerical results and conclusions are changed significantly: We present a calculation of the hadronic light-by-light contributions to the muon $g-2$ in the $1/N_c$ expansion. We have used an Extended NJL model and introduced an explicit cut-off for the high energy region. We have then critically studied the relative size of the high energy contributions. Although we find them large we can give a conservative estimate of the light-by-light contribution to $a_μ$ which is $-(11\pm5) \cdot 10^{-10}$. This is between two and three sigmas the expected experimental uncertainty at the forthcoming BNL experiment.

The $B_K$ Parameter in the $1/N_c$ Expansion

We calculate the $B_K$ parameter within the framework of the $1/N_c$ expansion. We essentially use the technique presented by Bardeen, Buras and Gérard but calculate an off-shell Green function in order to disentangle different contributions. We study this Green function in pure Chiral Perturbation Theory (CHPT) first and afterwards in the $1/N_c$ expansion in the presence of an explicit cut-off to determine $B_K$ and the counterterms appearing in CHPT. The high energy part is done using the renormalization group. For the low-energy contributions we use both CHPT and an Extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. This model has the right properties to match with the high energy QCD behaviour. We then study explicit chiral symmetry breaking effects by calculating with both massless and degenerate quarks together with the real case. A detailed analysis and comparison with the results found within other approaches is done. Consequences for present lattice calculations of this parameter are then obtained. As final result we get $0.60 < \hat B_K < 0.80$. If $m_s=m_d=0$ we get $0.25 < \hat B^χ_K < 0.55$.

Two- and Three-Point Functions in the Extended NJL Model

The two-point functions in generalized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio models are calculated to all orders in momenta and quark masses to leading order in $1/N_c$. The use of Ward identities and the heat-kernel expansion allows for a large degree of regularization independence. We also show how this approach works to the same order for three-point functions on the example of the vector-pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar three-point function. The inclusion of the chiral anomaly effects at this level is shown by calculating the pseudoscalar-vector-vector three-point function to the same order. Finally we comment on how (vector-)meson-dominance comes out in the presence of explicit chiral symmetry breaking in both the anomalous and the non-anomalous sectors.

Anomalies, VMD and the Enjl Model

We show how the effective action of the Extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model (ENJL) can be defined in the presence of anomalies in a way that reproduces the flavour anomaly. This necessarily breaks Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) in the usual sense. The same method can be used to construct other chiral effective theories involving constituent quarks and spin-1 mesons that give the correct flavour anomaly. We also comment on how standard VMD is the root of this problem and those observed by previous authors in implementing VMD in the anomalous sector.
