Snowmass 2021 Accelerator Frontier White Paper: Near Term Applications driven by Advanced Accelerator Concepts

While the long-term vision of the advanced accelerator community is aimed at addressing the challenges of future collider technology, it is critical that the community takes advantage of the opportunity to make large societal impact through its near-term applications. In turn, enabling robust applications strengthens the quality, control, and reliability of the underlying accelerator infrastructure. The white paper contributions that are solicited here will summarize the near-term applications ideas presented by the advanced accelerator community, assessing their potential impact, discussing scientific and technical readiness of concepts, and providing a timeline for implementation.

Resonant phase matching by oblique illumination of a dielectric laser accelerator

In dielectric laser-driven accelerators (DLA), careful tuning of drive-laser wavelength and structure periodicity is typically required in order to hit the resonant condition and match the phase velocity of the accelerating wave to the electron beam velocity. By aggressively detuning (up to 30 mrad) the angle of incidence of the drive laser on a double grating DLA structure, we show that it is possible to recover resonant phase matching and maximize the energy modulation of an externally injected 6 MeV beam in a 800 nm period structure driven using a 780 nm laser. These results show that it is possible to power DLA structures away from their design working point, and excite accelerating fields in the gap with phase profiles that change by a relatively large amount period-to-period. This flexibility is a key feature of DLAs and a critical element in the realization of phase-modulation based ponderomotive focusing to demonstrate MeV energy gain and large capture in a single DLA stage.

Frequency-domain calculation of Smith-Purcell radiation for metallic and dielectric gratings

The intensity of Smith-Purcell radiation from metallic and dielectric gratings (silicon, silica) is compared in a frequency-domain simulation. The numerical model is discussed and verified with the Frank-Tamm formula for Cherenkov radiation. For 30 keV electrons, rectangular dielectric gratings are less efficient than their metallic counterpart, by an order of magnitude for silicon, and two orders of magnitude for silica. For all gratings studied, radiation intensity oscillates with grating tooth height due to electromagnetic resonances in the grating. 3D and 2D numerical models are compared.
