Localization and multifractal properties of the long-range Kitaev chain in the presence of an Aubry-André-Harper modulation

In the presence of quasiperiodic potentials, the celebrated Kitaev chain presents an intriguing phase diagram with ergodic, localized and and multifractal states. In this work, we generalize these results by studying the localization properties of the Aubry-André-Harper model in the presence of long-range hopping and superconducting pairing amplitudes. These amplitudes decay with power-law exponents $ξ$ and $α$ respectively. To this end, we review and compare a toolbox of global and local characterization methods in order to investigate different types of transitions between ergodic, localized and multifractal states. We report energy-dependent transitions from ergodic to multifractal states for pairing terms with $α<1$ and energy-dependent transitions from ergodic to localized states with an intermediate multifractal region for $α>1$. The size of the intermediate multifractal region depends not only on the value of the superconducting pairing term $Δ$, but also on the energy band. The transitions are not described by a mobility edge, but instead we report hybridization of bands with different types of localization properties. This leads to coexisting multifractal regimes where fractal dimensions follow different distributions.

Topological quantum critical points in the extended Bose-Hubbard model

The combination of topology and quantum criticality can give rise to an exotic mix of counterintuitive effects. Here, we show that unexpected topological properties take place in a paradigmatic strongly-correlated Hamiltonian: the 1D extended Bose-Hubbard model. In particular, we reveal the presence of two distinct topological quantum critical points with localized edge states and gapless bulk excitations. Our results show that the topological critical points separate two phases, one topologically protected and the other topologically trivial, both characterized by a long-range ordered string correlation function. The long-range order persists also at the topological critical points and it reflects the presence of localized edge states protected by a finite charge gap. Finally, we introduce a super-resolution quantum gas microscopy scheme for dipolar dysprosium atoms, which provides a reliable route towards the experimental study of topological quantum critical points.

Variational Quantum Anomaly Detection: Unsupervised mapping of phase diagrams on a physical quantum computer

One of the most promising applications of quantum computing is simulating quantum many-body systems. However, there is still a need for methods to efficiently investigate these systems in a native way, capturing their full complexity. Here, we propose variational quantum anomaly detection, an unsupervised quantum machine learning algorithm to analyze quantum data from quantum simulation. The algorithm is used to extract the phase diagram of a system with no prior physical knowledge and can be performed end-to-end on the same quantum device that the system is simulated on. We showcase its capabilities by mapping out the phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Bose Hubbard model with dimerized hoppings, which exhibits a symmetry protected topological phase. Further, we show that it can be used with readily accessible devices nowadays and perform the algorithm on a real quantum computer.

Topological properties of the long-range Kitaev chain with Aubry-André-Harper modulation

We present a detailed study of the topological properties of the Kitaev chain with long-range pairing terms and in the presence of an Aubry-André-Harper on-site potential. Specifically, we consider algebraically decaying superconducting pairing amplitudes; the exponent of this decay is found to determine a critical pairing strength, below which the chain remains topologically trivial. Above the critical pairing, topological edge modes are observed in the central gap. For sufficiently fast decay of the pairing, these modes are identified as Majorana zero-modes. However, if the pairing term decays slowly, the modes become massive Dirac modes. Interestingly, these massive modes still exhibit a true level crossing at zero energy, which points towards an initimate relation to Majorana physics. We also observe a clear lack of bulk-boundary correspondence in the long-range system, where bulk topological invariants remain constant, while dramatic changes appear in the behavior at the edge of the system. In addition to the central gap around zero energy, the Aubry-André-Harper potential also leads to other energy gaps at non-zero energy. As for the analogous short-range model, the edge modes in these gaps can be characterized through a 2D Chern invariant. However, in contrast to the short-range model, this topological invariant does not correspond to the number of edge mode crossings anymore. This provides another example for the weakening of the bulk-boundary correspondence occurring in this model. Finally, we discuss possible realizations of the model with ultracold atoms and condensed matter systems.
