Hodge-de Rham numbers of almost complex 4-manifolds

We introduce and study Hodge-de Rham numbers for compact almost complex 4-manifolds, generalizing the Hodge numbers of a complex surface. The main properties of these numbers in the case of complex surfaces are extended to this more general setting, and it is shown that all Hodge-de Rham numbers for compact almost complex 4-manifolds are determined by the cohomology, except for one (the irregularity). Finally, these numbers are shown to prohibit the existence of complex structures on certain manifolds, without reference to the classification of surfaces.

Sheaves of E-infinity algebras and applications to algebraic varieties and singular spaces

We describe the E-infinity algebra structure on the complex of singular cochains of a topological space, in the context of sheaf theory. As a first application, for any algebraic variety we define a weight filtration compatible with its E-infinity structure. This naturally extends the theory of mixed Hodge structures in rational homotopy to p-adic homotopy theory. The spectral sequence associated to the weight filtration gives a new family of multiplicative algebraic invariants of the varieties for any coefficient ring, carrying Steenrod operations. As a second application, we promote Deligne's intersection complex computing intersection cohomology, to a sheaf carrying E-infinity structures. This allows for a natural interpretation of the Steenrod operations defined on the intersection cohomology of any topological pseudomanifold.

Characterization of quantum entanglement via a hypercube of Segre embeddings

A particularly simple description of separability of quantum states arises naturally in the setting of complex algebraic geometry, via the Segre embedding. This is a map describing how to take products of projective Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we show that for pure states of n particles, the corresponding Segre embedding may be described by means of a directed hypercube of dimension n-1, where all edges are bipartite-type Segre maps. Moreover, we describe the image of the original Segre map via the intersections of images of the n-1 edges whose target is the last vertex of the hypercube. This purely algebraic result is then transferred to physics. For each of the last edges of the Segre hypercube, we introduce an observable which measures geometric separability and is related to the trace of the squared reduced density matrix. As a consequence, the hypercube approach gives a novel viewpoint on measuring entanglement, naturally relating bipartitions with $q$-partitions for q>1. We test our observables against well-known states, showing that these provide well-behaved and fine measures of entanglement.

Topological and geometric aspects of almost Kähler manifolds via harmonic theory

The well-known Kähler identities naturally extend to the non-integrable setting. This paper deduces several geometric and topological consequences of these extended identities for compact almost Kähler manifolds. Among these are identities of various Laplacians, generalized Hodge and Serre dualities, a generalized hard Lefschetz duality, and a Lefschetz decomposition, all on the space of $d$-harmonic forms of pure bidegree. There is also a generalization of Hodge Index Theorem for compact almost Kähler $4$-manifolds. In particular, these provide topological bounds on the dimension of the space of $d$-harmonic forms of pure bidegree, as well as several new obstructions to the existence of a symplectic form compatible with a given almost complex structure.

Mixed Hodge structures on the intersection homotopy type of complex varieties with isolated singularities

A homotopical treatment of intersection cohomology recently developed by Chataur-Saralegui-Tanré associates a "perverse algebraic model" to every topological pseudomanifold, extending Sullivan's presentation of rational homotopy to intersection cohomology. In this context, there is a notion of "intersection-formality", measuring the vanishing of Massey products in intersection cohomology. In the present paper, we study the perverse algebraic model of complex projective varieties with isolated singularities. We endow such invariant with natural mixed Hodge structures. This allows us to prove some intersection-formality results for large families of complex projective varieties, such as isolated surface singularities and varieties of arbitrary dimension with ordinary isolated singularities.

Rational homotopy of complex projective varieties with normal isolated singularities

Let X be a complex projective variety of dimension n with only isolated normal singularities. In this paper we prove, using mixed Hodge theory, that if the link of each singular point of X is (n-2)-connected, then X is a formal topological space. This result applies to a large class of examples, such as normal surface singularities, varieties with ordinary multiple points, hypersurfaces with isolated singularities and more generally, complete intersections with isolated singularities. We obtain analogous results for contractions of subvarieties.

Classification of isometries of spaces of constant curvature and invariant subspaces

We study the varieties of invariant totally geodesic submanifolds of isometries of the spherical, Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces in each finite dimension. We show that the dimensions of the connected components of these varieties determine the orbit type (or the z-class) of the isometry. For this purpose, we introduce the Segre symbol of an isometry, a discrete invariant encoding the structure of its normal form, which parametrizes z-classes. We then provide a description of the isomorphism type of the varieties of invariant subspaces in terms of the Segre symbol.

Weight filtration on the cohomology of complex analytic spaces

We extend Deligne's weight filtration to the integer cohomology of complex analytic spaces (endowed with an equivalence class of compactifications). In general, the weight filtration that we obtain is not part of a mixed Hodge structure. Our purely geometric proof is based on cubical descent for resolution of singularities and Poincaré-Verdier duality. Using similar techniques, we introduce the singularity filtration on the cohomology of compactificable analytic spaces. This is a new and natural analytic invariant which does not depend on the equivalence class of compactifications and is related to the weight filtration.

Cofibrant models of diagrams: mixed Hodge structures in rational homotopy

We study the homotopy theory of a certain type of diagram categories whose vertices are in variable categories with a functorial path, leading to a good calculation of the homotopy category in terms of cofibrant objects. The theory is applied to the category of mixed Hodge diagrams of differential graded algebras. Using Sullivan's minimal models, we prove a multiplicative version of Beilinson's Theorem on mixed Hodge complexes. As a consequence, we obtain functoriality for the mixed Hodge structures on the rational homotopy type of complex algebraic varieties. In this context, the mixed Hodge structures on homotopy groups obtained by Morgan's theory follow from the derived functor of the indecomposables of mixed Hodge diagrams.
