Time-crystalline behavior in an engineered spin chain

Time crystals appear when systems display a commensurate spontaneous breaking of the discrete time translational invariance imposed by an external periodic drive. No consensus on the definition has been reached as yet, but important aspects comprise robustness against small variations of the parameters and the initial quantum state. Often, disorder and interaction are thought to be essential ingredients for the occurrence of time crystals. We study a finite-length polarized XX spin chain engineered to display a spectrum of equidistant energy levels without drive and show that it keeps a spectrum of equidistant quasienergies in Floquet theory for a large variety of periodic driving schemes. This interesting behavior is explained by mapping the XX spin chain with $N+1$ sites to a single large spin with $S=N/2$ invoking the closure of the group SU(2). For suitably tuned parameters this system realizes time crystals of various periodicities for \emph{all} initial states. The robustness against variations of the parameters is also discussed. Thereby, we establish a clean system without interaction which can display the phenomenon of time crystallization.

Probing thermalization in quenched (non-)integrable Fermi-Hubbard models

Using numerically exact methods we examine the Fermi-Hubbard model on arbitrary cluster topology. We focus on the question which systems eventually equilibrate or even thermalize after an interaction quench when initially prepared in a state highly entangled between system and bath. We find that constants of motion in integrable clusters prevent equilibration to the thermal state. We discuss the size of fluctuations during equilibration and thermalization and the influence of integrability. The influence of real space topology and in particular of infinite-range graphs on equilibration and thermalization is studied.

Increased coherence time in narrowed bath states in quantum dots

We study the influence of narrowed distributions of the nuclear Overhauser field on the decoherence of a central electron spin in quantum dots. We describe the spin dynamics in quantum dots by the central spin model. We use analytic solutions for uniform couplings and the time dependent density-matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) for nonuniform couplings. With these tools we calculate the dynamics of the central spin for large baths of nuclear spins with or without external magnetic field applied to the central spin. The focus of our study is the influence of initial mixtures with narrowed distributions of the Overhauser field and of applied magnetic fields on the decoherence of the central spin.

Quantum state transfer in disordered spin chains: How much engineering is reasonable?

The transmission of quantum states through spin chains is an important element in the implementation of quantum information technologies. Speed and fidelity of transfer are the main objectives which have to be achieved by the devices even in the presence of imperfections which are unavoidable in any manufacturing process. To reach these goals, several kinds of spin chains have been suggested, which differ in the degree of fine-tuning, or engineering, of the system parameters. In this work we present a systematic study of two important classes of such chains. In one class only the spin couplings at the ends of the chain have to be adjusted to a value different from the bulk coupling constant, while in the other class every coupling has to have a specific value. We demonstrate that configurations from the two different classes may perform similarly when subjected to the same kind of disorder in spite of the large difference in the engineering effort necessary to prepare the system. We identify the system features responsible for these similarities and we perform a detailed study of the transfer fidelity as a function of chain length and disorder strength, yielding empirical scaling laws for the fidelity which are similar for all kinds of chain and all disorder models. These results are helpful in identifying the optimal spin chain for a given quantum information transfer task. In particular, they help in judging whether it is worthwhile to engineer all couplings in the chain as compared to adjusting only the boundary couplings.

Robustness of spin-chain state-transfer schemes

This is a shortened and slightly edited version of a chapter in the collection "Quantum State Transfer and Network Engineering", edited by G.M. Nikolopoulos and I. Jex, where we review our own research about the robustness of spin-chain state-transfer schemes along with other approaches to the topic. Since our own research is documented elsewhere to a large extent we here restrict ourselves to a review of other approaches which might be useful to other researchers in the field.

Conservation laws protect dynamic spin correlations from decay: Limited role of integrability in the central spin model

Mazur's inequality renders statements about persistent correlations possible. We generalize it in a convenient form applicable to any set of linearly independent constants of motion. This approach is used to show rigorously that a fraction of the initial spin correlations persists indefinitely in the isotropic central spin model unless the average coupling vanishes. The central spin model describes a major mechanism of decoherence in a large class of potential realizations of quantum bits. Thus the derived results contribute significantly to the understanding of the preservation of coherence. We will show that persisting quantum correlations are not linked to the integrability of the model, but caused by a finite operator overlap with a finite set of constants of motion.

Finite temperature line-shapes of hard-core bosons in quantum magnets: A diagrammatic approach tested in one dimension

The dynamics in quantum magnets can often be described by effective models with bosonic excitations obeying a hard-core constraint. Such models can be systematically derived by renormalization schemes such as continuous unitary transformations or by variational approaches. Even in the absence of further interactions the hard-core constraint makes the dynamics of the hard-core bosons nontrivial. Here we develop a systematic diagrammatic approach to the spectral properties of hard-core bosons at finite temperature. Starting from an expansion in the density of thermally excited bosons in a system with an energy gap, our approach leads to a summation of ladder diagrams. Conceptually, the approach is not restricted to one dimension, but the one-dimensional case offers the opportunity to gauge the method by comparison to exact results obtained via a mapping to Jordan-Wigner fermions. In particular, we present results for the thermal broadening of single-particle spectral functions at finite temperature. The line-shape is found to be asymmetric at elevated temperatures and the band-width of the dispersion narrows with increasing temperature. Additionally, the total number of thermally excited bosons is calculated and compared to various approximations and analytic results. Thereby, a flexible approach is introduced which can also be applied to more sophisticated and higher dimensional models.

Transferring entangled states through spin chains by boundary-state multiplets

Quantum spin chains may be used to transfer quantum states between elements of a quantum information processing device. A scheme discovered recently \cite{BFR+12} was shown to have favorable transfer properties for ingle-qubit states even in the presence of built-in static disorder caused by manufacturing errors. We extend that scheme in a way suggested already in \cite{BFR+12} and study the transfer of the four Bell states which form a maximally entangled basis in the two-qubit Hilbert space. We show that perfect transfer of all four Bell states separately and of arbitrary linear combinations may be achieved for chains with hundreds of spins. For simplicity we restrict ourselves to systems without disorder.

Spin chains for robust state transfer: Modified boundary couplings vs. completely engineered chains

Quantum state transfer in the presence of noise is one of the main challenges in building quantum computers. We compare the quantum state transfer properties for two classes of qubit chains under the influence of static randomness. In fully engineered chains all nearest-neighbor couplings are tuned in such a way that a single-qubit state can be transferred perfectly between the ends of the chain, while in boundary-controlled chains only the two couplings between the transmitting and receiving qubits and the remainder of the chain can be optimized. We study how the noise in the couplings affects the state transfer fidelity depending on the noise model and strength as well as the chain type and length. We show that the desired level of fidelity and transfer time are important factors in designing a chain. In particular we demonstrate that transfer efficiency comparable or better than that of the most robust engineered systems can also be reached in boundary-controlled chains without the demanding engineering of a large number of couplings.

Exponential asymptotic spin correlations in XY chains

The long-time and long-distance asymptotic behavior of the $x$ spin correlations at finite temperature in an anisotropic spin-1/2 XY chain is determined numerically. The decay of the correlations is exponential in both space and time. Similar exponential decay of correlations was already found earlier in the special case of the isotropic model, where analytical expressions for the decay rates could be derived via a mapping to a different model. While no such mapping is known for the anisotropic model, the asymptotic correlations can be very well approximated by a natural generalization of the known analytic results for the isotropic case.

Robustness of spin-coupling distributions for perfect quantum state transfer

The transmission of quantum information between different parts of a quantum computer is of fundamental importance. Spin chains have been proposed as quantum channels for transferring information. Different configurations for the spin couplings were proposed in order to optimize the transfer. As imperfections in the creation of these specific spin-coupling distributions can never be completely avoided, it is important to find out which systems are optimally suited for information transfer by assessing their robustness against imperfections or disturbances. We analyze different spin coupling distributions of spin chain channels designed for perfect quantum state transfer. In particular, we study the transfer of an initial state from one end of the chain to the other end. We quantify the robustness of different coupling distributions against perturbations and we relate it to the properties of the energy eigenstates and eigenvalues. We find that the localization properties of the systems play an important role for robust quantum state transfer.

Dynamics and decoherence in the central spin model using exact methods

The dynamics and decoherence of an electronic spin-1/2 qubit coupled to a bath of nuclear spins via hyperfine interactions in a quantum dot is studied. We show how exact results from the integrable solution can be used to understand the dynamic behavior of the qubit. It is possible to predict the main frequency contributions and their broadening for relatively general initial states analytically, leading to an estimate of the corresponding decay times. Furthermore, for a small bath polarization, a new low-frequency time scale is observed.

Spectrum and Screening cloud in the central spin model

We consider an electronic spin in a quantum dot, coupled to the surrounding nuclear spins via inhomogeneous antiferromagnetic hyperfine interactions and subject to a uniform field, which is described by Gaudin's central spin model. We study spectral properties, the two-point correlation functions, and the magnetization profile in the ground state and in low-lying excited states, which characterizes the structure of the cloud of nuclear spins screening the electron spin. A close connection to the pair occupation probability in the BCS-model is established. Using the exact Bethe Ansatz solution of that model and arguments of integrability, we can distinguish between contributions from purely classical physics and from quantum fluctuations.

Dimer and trimer fluctuations in the s=1/2 transverse XX chain

Exact results for the dynamic dimer and trimer structure factors of the one-dimensional s=1/2 XX model in a transverse magnetic field ($\parallel z$) are presented and discussed in relation to known exact results for the dynamic spin structure factors. In the framework of the Jordan-Wigner representation, the accessible spectrum of the dimer fluctuation operator is limited to two-fermion excitations whereas that of the trimer fluctuation operator involves two-fermion and four-fermion excitations. The spectral boundaries, soft modes, and singularity structure of the four-fermion excitation continuum as probed by the dynamic trimer structure factor are examined and compared with corresponding properties of the two-fermion excitation continuum, as probed by the dynamic dimer and transverse spin structure factors.

Dynamic correlations of antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ chains at arbitrary temperature from complete diagonalization

All eigenstates and eigenvalues are determined for the spin- 1/2 $XXZ$ chain $H = 2J \sum_i ( S_{i}^{x} S_{i + 1}^{x} + S_{i}^{y} S_{i + 1}^{y} + ΔS_i^z S_{i + 1}^{z})$ for rings with up to N=16 spins, for anisotropies $Δ=0 , \cos(0.3π)$, and 1. The dynamic spin pair correlations $< S_{l+n}^μ(t) S_l^μ > , (μ=x,z)$, the dynamic structure factors $S^μ(q,ω)$, and the intermediate structure factors $I^μ(q,t)$ are calculated for arbitrary temperature T. It is found, that for all T, $S^{z}(q,ω)$ is mainly concentrated on the region $|ω| < \varepsilon_2(q)$, where $\varepsilon_2(q)$ is the upper boundary of the two-spinon continuum, although excited states corresponding to a much broader frequency spectrum contribute. This is also true for the Haldane-Shastry model and the frustrated Heisenberg model. The intermediate structure factors $I^μ(q,t)$ for $Δ\neq 0$ show exponential decay for high T and large q. Within the accessible time range, the time-dependent spin correlation functions do not display the long-time signatures of spin diffusion.
