Review of 5G capabilities for smart manufacturing

5G has been defined to address new use cases beyond consumer-focused mobile broadband services. In particular industrial use cases, for example in smart manufacturing, have been addressed in the 5G standardization, so that 5G can support industrial IoT services and wireless industrial networking. To this end, 5G needs to integrate with the industrial network based on Ethernet and TSN. 5G can create new opportunities for smart manufacturing by enabling flexibility and increasing the automation in the production. This paper provides an overview of the use cases and requirements for smart manufacturing that can be addressed with 5G and which are validated in three industrial 5G trial systems. The capabilities of 5G are described for providing non-public networks that support industrial LAN services based on Ethernet and TSN. The 5G radio access network functionality is described and discussed for practical deployments. The paper provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art of using 5G for smart manufacturing.

Translating Cyber-Physical Control Application Requirements to Network level Parameters

Cyber-physical control applications impose strict requirements on the reliability and latency of the underlying communication system. Hence, they have been mostly implemented using wired channels where the communication service is highly predictable. Nevertheless, fulfilling such stringent demands is envisioned with the fifth generation of mobile networks (5G). The requirements of such applications are often defined on the application layer. However, cyber-physical control applications can usually tolerate sparse packet loss, and therefore it is not at all obvious what configurations and settings these application level requirements impose on the underlying wireless network. In this paper, we apply the fundamental metrics from reliability literature to wireless communications and derive a mapping function between application level requirements and network level parameters for those metrics under deterministic arrivals. Our mapping function enables network designers to realize the end-to-end performance (as the target application observes it). It provides insights to the network controller to either enable more reliability enhancement features (e.g., repetition), if the metrics are below requirements, or to enable features increasing network utilization, otherwise. We evaluate our theoretical results by realistic and detailed simulations of a factory automation scenario. Our simulation results confirm the viability of the theoretical framework under various burst error tolerance and load conditions.

Impact of Correlated Failures in 5G Dual Connectivity Architectures for URLLC Applications

Achieving end-to-end ultra-reliability and resiliency in mission critical communications is a major challenge for future wireless networks. Dual connectivity has been proposed by 3GPP as one of the viable solutions to fulfill the reliability requirements. However, the potential correlation in failures occurring over different wireless links is commonly neglected in current network design approaches. In this paper, we investigate the impact of realistic correlation among different wireless links on end-to-end reliability for two selected architectures from 3GPP. In ultra-reliable use-cases, we show that even small values of correlation can increase the end-to-end error rate by orders of magnitude. This may suggest alternative feasible architecture designs and paves the way towards serving ultra-reliable communications in 5G networks.

5G Ultra-Reliable Vehicular Communication

Applications enabled by Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) represent a major step towards making the road transport system safer and more efficient (green), and thus suited for a sustainable future. Wireless communication between vehicles and road infrastructure is an enabler for high-performance C-ITS applications. State-of-the-art communication systems for supporting low-latency C-ITS applications are based on IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) and physical (PHY) layers. In this paper, we argue that a well-designed 5G system can complement or even replace these systems. We will review the C-ITS application requirements and explain how these are well aligned with the foreseen generic 5G service of ultra-reliable machine-type communication (uMTC). Key technology components suitable for constructing the uMTC service are identified: reliable service composition (RSC) and device-to-device (D2D) links for all-to-all broadcast communication, operational at high mobility and with varying degree of network assistance. Important problems for future studies, including radio-resource management, medium access control, and physical layer challenges, are discussed.

Understanding the IoT Connectivity Landscape: A Contemporary M2M Radio Technology Roadmap

This article addresses the market-changing phenomenon of the Internet of Things (IoT), which relies on the underlying paradigm of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications to integrate a plethora of various sensors, actuators, and smart meters across a wide spectrum of businesses. The M2M landscape features today an extreme diversity of available connectivity solutions which -- due to the enormous economic promise of the IoT -- need to be harmonized across multiple industries. To this end, we comprehensively review the most prominent existing and novel M2M radio technologies, as well as share our first-hand real-world deployment experiences, with the goal to provide a unified insight into enabling M2M architectures, unique technology features, expected performance, and related standardization developments. We pay particular attention to the cellular M2M sector employing 3GPP LTE technology. This work is a systematic recollection of our many recent research, industrial, entrepreneurial, and standardization efforts within the contemporary M2M ecosystem.
