Electronic Structure of ThPd$_2$Al$_3$: an impact of the U $5f$ states in the electronic structure of UPd$_2$Al$_3$

The electronic structure of ThPd$_2$Al$_3$, which is isostructural to the heavy fermion superconductor UPd$_2$Al$_3$, was investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy. The band structure and Fermi surfaces of ThPd$_2$Al$_3$ were obtained by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), and the results were well-explained by the band-structure calculation based on the local density approximation. The comparison between the ARPES spectra and the band-structure calculation suggests that the Fermi surface of ThPd$_2$Al$_3$ mainly consists of the Al $3p$ and Th $6d$ states with a minor contribution from the Pd $4d$ states. The comparison of the band structures between ThPd$_2$Al$_3$ and UPd$_2$Al$_3$ argues that the U $5f$ states form Fermi surfaces in UPd$_2$Al$_3$ through hybridization with the Al $3p$ state in the Al layer, suggesting that the Fermi surface of UPd$_2$Al$_3$ has a strong three-dimensional nature.

Tricritical fluctuations and elastic properties of the Ising antiferromagnet UIrSi$_3$

Elastic constants, thermal expansion, magnetostriction and heat capacity measurements were performed with and without applied magnetic field on a single crystal of UIrSi$_3$. The elastic properties were interpreted within the theory of the strain-exchange effect. The exchange-striction model together with the Ising model for the behavior of magnetic localized 5$f$ electrons and itinerant electrons of uranium correctly reproduces the main features of our magneto-acoustic experiments in UIrSi$_3$. Data on thermal expansion and magnetostriction confirm the conclusion that the dominant contribution of the measured temperature and field change in the speed of sound comes from the change in the elastic modulus itself. Based on the analysis of heat capacity measurements in the magnetic field, we explain the significant anomalies at the second-order branch of the phase transition boundary as a manifestation of the tricritical fluctuations, dominating the region below the tricritical point. The outcome confirms the 3D Ising model, at zero and low magnetic fields, with a crossover to the mean-field tricritical behavior at fields close to the tricritical point, where tricritical fluctuations dominate the temperature evolution of the given property.

Evolution of ferromagnetic and non-Fermi liquid state with doping:the case of Ru doped UCoGe

We have investigated the impact of Ru substitution for Co on the behavior of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe by performing x-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements on polycrystalline samples of the $\mathrm{UCo}_{1-x}\mathrm{Ru}_{x}\mathrm{Ge}$ series ($0\geq x\leq0.9$). The initial Ru substitution up to $x\approx0.1$ leads to a simultaneous sharp increase of the Curie temperature and spontaneous magnetization up to maximum values of $T_{\mathrm{C}}=8.6 K$ and $M_{\mathrm{S}}=0.1 μ_{\mathrm{B}}$ per formula unit, respectively, whereas superconductivity vanishes already for $x\approx0.03$. Further increase of the Ru content beyond $x\approx0.1$ leads to a precipitous decrease of both, $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ and $M_{\mathrm{S}}$ towards a ferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) at $x_{\mathrm{cr}}=0.31$. Consequently the $T-x$ magnetic phase diagram consists of a well-developed ferromagnetic dome. We discuss the evolution of ferromagnetism with $x$ on the basis of band structure changes due to varying 5$f$-ligand hybridization. This scenario is supported by the results of electronic structure calculations and consideration of the simplified periodic Anderson model. The analysis of the temperature dependencies of the electrical resistivity and heat capacity at low temperatures of the samples in the vicinity of the QCP reveals a non-Fermi liquid behavior and assigns the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition to be most likely of a continuous Hertz-Millis type.

Complex Magnetic Phase Diagram of a Geometrically Frustrated Sm Lattice: SmPd2Al3 case

Magnetism in SmPd2Al3 was investigated on a single crystal by magnetometry and neutron diffraction. SmPd2Al3 represents a distinctive example of the Sm magnetism exhibiting complex magnetic behavior at low temperatures with four consecutive magnetic phase transitions at 3.4, 3.9, 4.3 and 12.5 K. The rich magnetic phase diagram of this compound reflects the specific features of the Sm3+ ion, namely the energy nearness of the ground-state multiplet J = 5/2 and the first excited multiplet J = 7/2 in conjunction with strong crystal field influence. Consequently, a significantly reduced Sm magnetic moment in comparison with the theoretical Sm3+ free-ion value is observed. Despite the strong neutron absorption by natural samarium and the small Sm magnetic moment (~ 0.2 μB) we have successfully determined the magnetic k-vector (1/3, 1/3, 0) of the phase existing in the temperature interval 12.5 - 4.3 K. This observation classifies the SmPd2Al3 compound as a magnetically frustrated system. The complex magnetic behavior of this material is further illustrated by kinetic effects of the magnetization inducing rather complicated magnetic structure with various metastable states.

Influence of symmetry on Sm magnetism studied on SmIr2Si2 polymorphs

Polycrystalline samples of SmIr2Si2 formed at room temperature both the low temperature phase (LTP) and the metastable high temperature phase (HTP), respectively, depending on the heat treatment. The samples were studied by X-ray powder diffraction, DTA, specific-heat and magnetization measurements with respect to temperature and magnetic field. The first order LTP to HTP polymorphic phase transition has been determined showing the huge temperature hysteresis of 264°C caused by the high energy barrier due to the change of stacking of Sm, Ir and Si basal plane sheets within the transition. Both polymorphs show indications of antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures. The considerably different magnetic phase transitions determined for the LTP and HTP confirm the strong influence of crystal structure symmetry on magnetism in the two polymorphs. The magnetism in SmIr2Si2 exhibits typical features caused by the specific behavior of Sm3+ ion characterized by energy nearness of the ground state and first excited state and crystal field influence. Interpretation of experimental results is corroborated by results of ab initio electronic structure calculations.

Superconductivity in the YIr2Si2 and LaIr2Si2 Polymorphs

We report on existence of superconductivity in YIr2Si2 and LaIr2Si2 compounds in relation to crystal structure. The two compounds crystallize in two structural polymorphs, both tetragonal. The high temperature polymorph (HTP) adopts the CaBe2Ge2-structure type (space group P4/nmm) while the low temperature polymorph (LTP) is of the ThCr2Si2 type (I4/mmm). By studying polycrystals prepared by arc melting we have observed that the rapidly cooled samples retain the HTP even at room temperature (RT) and below. Annealing such samples at 900C followed by slow cooling to RT provides the LTP. Both, the HTP and LTP were subsequently studied with respect to magnetism and superconductivity by electrical resistivity, magnetization, AC susceptibility and specific heat measurements. The HTP and LTP of both compounds respectively, behave as Pauli paramagnets. Superconductivity has been found exclusively in the HTP of both compounds below Tsc (= 2.52 K in YIr2Si2 and 1.24 K in LaIr2Si2). The relations of magnetism and superconductivity with the electronic and crystal structure are discussed with comparing experimental data with the results of first principles electronic structure calculations.

Low magnetic field phase diagram of UCoGe

We propose an alternate scenario for the relation between ferromagnetism (FM) and superconductivity (SC) in UCoGe at ambient pressure. On the basis of neutron polarimetry measurement performed in strictly zero field on a single-crystal at ambient pressure, we claim that the SC phase does exist in spite of lack of long-range FM order. Moreover, the SC regime dominates to the paramagnetic (PM) state in small external magnetic fields. Above the critical SC temperature, TSC = 0.64 K, the zero-field state is characterized by a regime with strong FM spin fluctuations, suggesting the proximity of the FM quantum critical point. We present an ambient-pressure phase diagram of UCoGe based on our resistivity, magnetization and neutron polarimetry results.
