Zero-Inertia Limit: from Particle Swarm Optimization to Consensus Based Optimization

Recently a continuous description of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) based on a system of stochastic differential equations was proposed by Grassi and Pareschi in arXiv:2012.05613 where the authors formally showed the link between PSO and the consensus based optimization (CBO) through zero-inertia limit. This paper is devoted to solving this theoretical open problem proposed in arXiv:2012.05613 by providing a rigorous derivation of CBO from PSO through the limit of zero inertia, and a quantified convergence rate is obtained as well. The proofs are based on a probabilistic approach by investigating the weak convergence of the corresponding stochastic differential equations (SDEs) of Mckean type in the continuous path space and the results are illustrated with some numerical examples.

On the mean-field limit for the consensus-based optimization

This paper is concerned with the large particle limit for the consensus-based optimization (CBO), which was postulated in the pioneering works [6,28]. In order to solve this open problem, we adapt a compactness argument by first proving the tightness of the empirical measures $\{μ^N\}_{N\geq 2}$ associated to the particle system and then verifying that the limit measure $μ$ is the unique weak solution to the mean-field CBO equation. Such results are extended to the model of particle swarm optimization (PSO).

Pricing Options Under Rough Volatility with Backward SPDEs

In this paper, we study the option pricing problems for rough volatility models. As the framework is non-Markovian, the value function for a European option is not deterministic; rather, it is random and satisfies a backward stochastic partial differential equation (BSPDE). The existence and uniqueness of weak solution is proved for general nonlinear BSPDEs with unbounded random leading coefficients whose connections with certain forward-backward stochastic differential equations are derived as well. These BSPDEs are then used to approximate American option prices. A deep leaning-based method is also investigated for the numerical approximations to such BSPDEs and associated non-Markovian pricing problems. Finally, the examples of rough Bergomi type are numerically computed for both European and American options.

Stochastic Path-Dependent Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equations and Controlled Stochastic Differential Equations with Random Path-Dependent Coefficients

In this paper, we propose and study the stochastic path-dependent Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (SPHJB) equation that arises naturally from the optimal stochastic control problem of stochastic differential equations with path-dependence and measurable randomness. Both the notions of viscosity solution and classical solution are proposed, and the value function of the optimal stochastic control problem is proved to be the viscosity solution to the associated SPHJB equation. A uniqueness result about viscosity solutions is also given for certain superparabolic cases, while the uniqueness of classical solution is addressed for general cases. In addition, an Itô-Kunita-Wentzell-Krylov formula is proved for the compositions of random fields and stochastic differential equations in the path-dependent setting.

The microscopic derivation and well-posedness of the stochastic Keller-Segel equation

In this paper, we propose and study a stochastic aggregation-diffusion equation of the Keller-Segel (KS) type for modeling the chemotaxis in dimensions $d=2,3$. Unlike the classical deterministic KS system, which only allows for idiosyncratic noises, the stochastic KS equation is derived from an interacting particle system subject to both idiosyncratic and common noises. Both the unique existence of solutions to the stochastic KS equation and the mean-field limit result are addressed.

A Functional Limit Theorem for Limit Order Books with State Dependent Price Dynamics

We consider a stochastic model for the dynamics of the two-sided limit order book (LOB). Our model is flexible enough to allow for a dependence of the price dynamics on volumes. For the joint dynamics of best bid and ask prices and the standing buy and sell volume densities, we derive a functional limit theorem, which states that our LOB model converges in distribution to a fully coupled SDE-SPDE system when the order arrival rates tend to infinity and the impact of an individual order arrival on the book as well as the tick size tends to zero. The SDE describes the bid/ask price dynamics while the SPDE describes the volume dynamics.

Maximum Principle for Quasi-linear Reflected Backward SPDEs

This paper establishes a maximum principle for quasi-linear reflected backward stochastic partial differential equations (RBSPDEs for short). We prove the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution to RBSPDEs allowing for non-zero Dirichlet boundary conditions and, using a stochastic version of De Giorgi's iteration, establish the maximum principle for RBSPDEs on a general domain. The maximum principle for RBSPDEs on a bounded domain and the maximum principle for backward stochastic partial differential equations (BSPDEs for short) on a general domain can be obtained as byproducts. Finally, the local behavior of the weak solutions is considered.

A Constrained Control Problem with Degenerate Coefficients and Degenerate Backward SPDEs with Singular Terminal Condition

We study a constrained optimal control problem with possibly degenerate coefficients arising in models of optimal portfolio liquidation under market impact. The coefficients can be random in which case the value function is described by a degenerate backward stochastic partial differential equation (BSPDE) with singular terminal condition. For this degenerate BSPDE, we prove existence and uniqueness of a nonnegative solution. Our existence result requires a novel gradient estimate for degenerate BSPDEs.

A Non-Markovian Liquidation Problem and Backward SPDEs with Singular Terminal Conditions

We establish existence, uniqueness and regularity of solution results for a class of backward stochastic partial differential equations with singular terminal condition. The equation describes the value function of non-Markovian stochastic optimal control problem in which the terminal state of the controlled process is pre-specified. The analysis of such control problems is motivated by models of optimal portfolio liquidation.

Weak Solution for a Class of Fully Nonlinear Stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Equations

This paper is concerned with the stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation with controlled leading coefficients, which is a type of fully nonlinear backward stochastic partial differential equation (BSPDE for short). In order to formulate the weak solution for such kind of BSPDEs, the classical potential theory is generalized in the backward stochastic framework. The existence and uniqueness of the weak solution is proved, and for the partially non-Markovian case, we obtain the associated gradient estimate. As a byproduct, the existence and uniqueness of solution for a class of degenerate reflected BSPDEs is discussed as well.

Forward-Backward Stochastic Differential Systems Associated to Navier-Stokes Equations in the Whole Space

A coupled forward-backward stochastic differential system (FBSDS) is formulated in spaces of fields for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in the whole space. It is shown to have a unique local solution, and further if either the Reynolds number is small or the dimension of the forward stochastic differential equation is equal to two, it can be shown to have a unique global solution. These results are shown with probabilistic arguments to imply the known existence and uniqueness results for the Navier-Stokes equation, and thus provide probabilistic formulas to the latter. Related results and the maximum principle are also addressed for partial differential equations (PDEs) of Burgers' type. Moreover, from truncating the time interval of the above FBSDS, approximate solution is derived for the Navier-Stokes equation by a new class of FBSDSs and their associated PDEs; our probabilistic formula is also bridged to the probabilistic Lagrangian representations for the velocity field, given by Constantin and Iyer (Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 61: 330--345, 2008) and Zhang (Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 148: 305--332, 2010) ; finally, the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is shown to be a critical point of controlled forward-backward stochastic differential equations.

On the Quasi-linear Reflected Backward Stochastic Partial Differential Equations

This paper is concerned with the quasi-linear reflected backward stochastic partial differential equation (RBSPDE for short). Basing on the theory of backward stochastic partial differential equation and the parabolic capacity and potential, we first associate the RBSPDE to a variational problem, and via the penalization method, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution for linear RBSPDE with Lapalacian leading coefficients. With the continuity approach, we further obtain the well-posedness of general quasi-linear RBSPDEs. Related results, including Itô formulas for backward stochastic partial differential equations with random measures, the comparison principle for solutions of RBSPDEs and the connections with reflected backward stochastic differential equations and optimal stopping problems, are addressed as well.

2D Backward Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equations with Nonlinear Forcing

The paper is concerned with the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to a two-dimensional backward stochastic Navier-Stokes equation with nonlinear forcing, driven by a Brownian motion. We use the spectral approximation and the truncation and variational techniques. The methodology features an interactive analysis on basis of the regularity of the deterministic Navier-Stokes dynamics and the stochastic properties of the Itô-type diffusion processes.

Maximum Principle for Quasi-linear Backward Stochastic Partial Differential Equations

In this paper we are concerned with the maximum principle for quasi-linear backward stochastic partial differential equations (BSPDEs for short) of parabolic type. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution to quasi-linear BSPDE with the null Dirichlet condition on the lateral boundary. Then using the De Giorgi iteration scheme, we establish the maximum estimates and the global maximum principle for quasi-linear BSPDEs. To study the local regularity of weak solutions, we also prove a local maximum principle for the backward stochastic parabolic De Giorgi class.
