Snowmass 2021 White Paper: Charged lepton flavor violation in the tau sector

Charged lepton flavor violation has long been recognized as unambiguous signature of New Physics. Here we describe the physics capabilities and discovery potential of New Physics models with charged lepton flavor violation in the tau sector as its experimental signature. Current experimental status from the B-Factory experiments BaBar, Belle and Belle II, and future prospects at Super Tau Charm Factory, LHC, EIC and FCC-ee experiments to discover New Physics via charged lepton flavor violation in the tau sector are discussed in detail. Submitted to the Proceedings of the US Community Study on the Future of Particle Physics (Snowmass 2021)

Transverse Lambda production at the future Electron-Ion Collider

We provide a comprehensive overview of transversely polarized $Λ$ production at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). In particular, we study both spontaneous transverse $Λ$ polarization as well as the transverse spin transfer within the Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) factorization region. To describe spontaneous $Λ$ polarization, we consider the contribution from the TMD Polarizing Fragmentation Function (TMD PFF). Similarly, we study the contribution of the transverse spin transfer originating from the transversity TMD Fragmentation Function (TMD FF). We provide projections for the statistical uncertainties in the corresponding spin observables at the future EIC. Using these statistical uncertainties, we characterize the role that the future EIC will play in constraining these distributions. We perform an impact study in the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process for spontaneous $Λ$ polarization with a proton beam. We find that the projected experimental data leads to a significant decrease in the uncertainties for the $u$ and sea TMD PFFs. Furthermore, to access the impact of the EIC on the transversity TMD FF, we perform the first extraction of the transversity TMD FF from the recent COMPASS data. We compare the statistical uncertainties of the future EIC with the theoretical uncertainties from our extraction and find that the EIC could have a significant role in constraining this distribution. Finally, we also provide projections for both spontaneous $Λ$ polarization as well as the transverse spin transfer inside the jets in back-to-back electron-jet production at the EIC.

Large dynamical axion field in topological antiferromagnetic insulator Mn$_2$Bi$_2$Te$_5$

The dynamical axion field is a new state of quantum matter where the magnetoelectric response couples strongly to its low-energy magnetic fluctuations. It is fundamentally different from an axion insulator with a static quantized magnetoelectric response. The dynamical axion field exhibits many exotic phenomena such as axionic polariton and axion instability. However, these effects have not been experimentally confirmed due to the lack of proper topological magnetic materials. Here by combining analytic models and first-principles calculations, we predict a series of van der Waal layered Mn$_2$Bi$_2$Te$_5$-related topological antiferromagnetic materials could host the long-sought dynamical axion field with a topological origin. We also show a large dynamical axion field can be achieved in antiferromagnetic insulating states close to the topological phase transition. We further propose the optical and transport experiments to detect such a dynamical axion field. Our results could directly aid and facilitate the search for topological-origin large dynamical axion field in realistic materials.

The STAR Event Plane Detector

The Event Plane Detector (EPD) is an upgrade detector to the STAR experiment at RHIC, designed to measure the pattern of forward-going charged particles emitted in a high-energy collision between heavy nuclei. It consists of two highly-segmented disks of 1.2-cm-thick scintillator embedded with wavelength-shifting fiber, coupled to silicon photomultipliers and custom electronics. We describe the general design of the device, its construction, and performance on the bench and in the experiment.

Forward Instrumentation for ILC Detectors

Two special calorimeters are foreseen for the instrumentation of the very forward region of the ILC detector, a luminometer designed to measure the rate of low angle Bhabha scattering events with a precision better than 10-3 and a low polar angle calorimeter, adjacent to the beam-pipe. The latter will be hit by a large amount of beamstrahlung remnants. The amount and shape of these depositions will allow a fast luminosity estimate and the determination of beam parameters. The sensors of this calorimeter must be radiation hard. Both devices will improve the hermeticity of the detector in the search for new particles. Finely segmented and very compact calorimeters will match the requirements. Due to the high occupancy fast front-end electronics is needed. The design of the calorimeters developed and optimised with Monte Carlo simulations is presented. Sensors and readout electronics ASICs have been designed and prototypes are available. Results on the performance of these major components are summarised.
