Translating solutions for a class of quasilinear parabolic initial boundary value problems in Lorentz-Minkowski plane R12\mathbb{R}^{2}_{1}

In this paper, we investigate the evolution of spacelike curves in Lorentz-Minkowski plane R12\mathbb{R}^{2}_{1} along prescribed geometric flows (including the classical curve shortening flow or mean curvature flow as a special case), which correspond to a class of quasilinear parabolic initial boundary value problems, and can prove that this flow exists for all time. Moreover, we can also show that the evolving spacelike curves converge to a spacelike straight line or a spacelike Grim Reaper curve as time tends to infinity.

Matrix Variate RBM and Its Applications

Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) is an importan- t generative model modeling vectorial data. While applying an RBM in practice to images, the data have to be vec- torized. This results in high-dimensional data and valu- able spatial information has got lost in vectorization. In this paper, a Matrix-Variate Restricted Boltzmann Machine (MVRBM) model is proposed by generalizing the classic RBM to explicitly model matrix data. In the new RBM model, both input and hidden variables are in matrix forms which are connected by bilinear transforms. The MVRBM has much less model parameters, resulting in a faster train- ing algorithm while retaining comparable performance as the classic RBM. The advantages of the MVRBM have been demonstrated on two real-world applications: Image super- resolution and handwritten digit recognition.

High-throughput Imaging and Spectroscopy of Individual Carbon Nanotubes in Devices with Light Microscopy

Two paramount challenges in carbon nanotube research are achieving chirality-controlled synthesis and understanding chirality-dependent device physics. High-throughput and in-situ chirality and electronic structural characterization of individual carbon nanotubes is crucial for addressing these challenges. Optical imaging and spectroscopy has unparalleled throughput and specificity, but its realization for single nanotubes on substrates or in devices has long been an outstanding challenge. Here we demonstrate video-rate imaging and in-situ spectroscopy of individual carbon nanotubes on various substrates and in functional devices using a novel high-contrast polarization-based optical microscopy. Our technique enables the complete chirality profiling of hundreds of as-grown carbon nanotubes. In addition, we in-situ monitor nanotube electronic structure in active field-effect devices, and observe that high-order nanotube optical resonances are dramatically broadened by electrostatic doping. This unexpected behaviour points to strong interband electron-electron scattering processes that can dominate ultrafast dynamics of excited states in carbon nanotubes.
