Detection of Fights in Videos: A Comparison Study of Anomaly Detection and Action Recognition

Detection of fights is an important surveillance application in videos. Most existing methods use supervised binary action recognition. Since frame-level annotations are very hard to get for anomaly detection, weakly supervised learning using multiple instance learning is widely used. This paper explores the detection of fights in videos as one special type of anomaly detection and as binary action recognition. We use the UBI-Fight and NTU-CCTV-Fight datasets for most of the study since they have frame-level annotations. We find that the anomaly detection has similar or even better performance than the action recognition. Furthermore, we study to use anomaly detection as a toolbox to generate training datasets for action recognition in an iterative way conditioned on the performance of the anomaly detection. Experiment results should show that we achieve state-of-the-art performance on three fight detection datasets.

Two-Stage COVID19 Classification Using BERT Features

We propose an automatic COVID1-19 diagnosis framework from lung CT-scan slice images using double BERT feature extraction. In the first BERT feature extraction, A 3D-CNN is first used to extract CNN internal feature maps. Instead of using the global average pooling, a late BERT temporal pooing is used to aggregate the temporal information in these feature maps, followed by a classification layer. This 3D-CNN-BERT classification network is first trained on sampled fixed number of slice images from every original CT scan volume. In the second stage, the 3D-CNN-BERT embedding features are extracted on all slice images of every CT scan volume, and these features are averaged into a fixed number of segments. Then another BERT network is used to aggregate these multiple features into a single feature followed by another classification layer. The classification results of both stages are combined to generate final outputs. On the validation dataset, we achieve macro F1 score of 0.9164.

YOLO5Face: Why Reinventing a Face Detector

Tremendous progress has been made on face detection in recent years using convolutional neural networks. While many face detectors use designs designated for detecting faces, we treat face detection as a generic object detection task. We implement a face detector based on the YOLOv5 object detector and call it YOLO5Face. We make a few key modifications to the YOLOv5 and optimize it for face detection. These modifications include adding a five-point landmark regression head, using a stem block at the input of the backbone, using smaller-size kernels in the SPP, and adding a P6 output in the PAN block. We design detectors of different model sizes, from an extra-large model to achieve the best performance to a super small model for real-time detection on an embedded or mobile device. Experiment results on the WiderFace dataset show that on VGA images, our face detectors can achieve state-of-the-art performance in almost all the Easy, Medium, and Hard subsets, exceeding the more complex designated face detectors. Discrete solitons and vortices on two-dimensional lattices of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric couplers

We introduce a 2D network built of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimers with on-site cubic nonlinearity, the gain and loss elements of the dimers being linked by parallel square-shaped lattices. The system may be realized as a set of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dual-core waveguides embedded into a photonic crystal. The system supports $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and antisymmetric fundamental solitons (FSs) and on-site-centered solitary vortices (OnVs). Stability of these discrete solitons is the central topic of the consideration. Their stability regions in the underlying parameter space are identified through the computation of stability eigenvalues, and verified by direct simulations. Symmetric FSs represent the system's ground state, being stable at lowest values of the power, while anti-symmetric FSs and OnVs are stable at higher powers. Symmetric OnVs, which are also stable at lower powers, are remarkably robust modes: on the contrary to other PT-symmetric states, unstable OnVs do not blow up, but spontaneously rebuild themselves into stable FSs.

Lattice solitons with quadrupolar intersite interactions

We study two-dimensional (2D) solitons in the mean-field models of ultracold gases with long-range quadrupole-quadrupole interaction (QQI) between particles. The condensate is loaded into a deep optical-lattice (OL) potential, therefore the model is based on the 2D discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with contact onsite and long-range intersite interactions, which represent the QQI. The quadrupoles are built as pairs of electric dipoles and anti-dipoles orientated perpendicular to the 2D plane to which the gas is confined. Because the quadrupoles interact with the local gradient of the external field, they are polarized by inhomogeneous dc electric field that may be supplied by a tapered capacitor. Shapes, stability, mobility, and collisions of fundamental discrete solitons are studied by means of systematic simulations. In particular, threshold values of the norm, necessary for the existence of the solitons, are found, and anisotropy of their static and dynamical properties is explored. As concerns the mobility and collisions, it is the first analysis of such properties for discrete solitons on 2D lattices with long-range intersite interactions of any type. Estimates demonstrate that the setting can be realized under experimentally available conditions, predicting solitons built of $\sim$ 10,000 particles.

Matter-wave solitons supported by field-induced dipole-dipole repulsion with a spatially modulated strength

We demonstrate the existence of one and two-dimensional bright solitons in the Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive dipole-dipole interactions induced by a combination of dc and ac polarizing fields, oriented perpendicular to the plane in which the BEC is trapped, assuming that the strength of the fields grows in the radial ($r$) direction faster than $r^{3}$. Stable tightly confined 1D and 2D fundamental solitons, twisted solitons in 1D, and solitary vortices in 2D are found in a numerical form. The fundamental solitons remain robust under the action of an expulsive potential, which is induced by the interaction of the dipoles with the polarizing field. The confinement and scaling properties of the soliton families are explained analytically. The Thomas-Fermi approximation is elaborated for fundamental solitons. The mobility of the fundamental solitons is limited to the central area. Stable 1D even and odd solitons are also found in the setting with a double-well modulation function, along with a regime of Josephson oscillations.

Symmetry breaking in dipolar matter-wave solitons in dual-core couplers

We study effects of the spontaneous symmetry-breaking (SSB) in solitons built of the dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), trapped in a dual-core system with the dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs) and hopping between the cores. Two realizations of such a matter-wave coupler are introduced, weakly- and strongly-coupled. The former one in based on two parallel pipe-shaped traps, while the latter one is represented by a single pipe sliced by an external field into parallel layers. The dipoles are oriented along axes of the pipes. In these systems, the dual-core solitons feature the SSB of the supercritical type and subcritical types, respectively. Stability regions are identified for symmetric and asymmetric solitons, and, in addition, for non-bifurcating antisymmetric ones, as well as for symmetric flat states, which may also be stable in the strongly-coupled system, due to competition between the attractive and repulsive intra- and inter-core DDIs. Effects of the contact interactions are considered too. Collisions between moving asymmetric solitons in the weakly-symmetric system feature elastic rebound, merger into a single breather, and passage accompanied by excitation of intrinsic vibrations of the solitons, for small, intermediate, and large collision velocities, respectively. A PT-symmetric version of the weakly-coupled system is briefly considered too, which may be relevant for matter-wave lasers. Stability boundaries for PT-symmetric and antisymmetric solitons are identified.
