Rethinking complexity for software code structures: A pioneering study on Linux kernel code repository

The recent progress of artificial intelligence(AI) has shown great potentials for alleviating human burden in various complex tasks. From the view of software engineering, AI techniques can be seen in many fundamental aspects of development, such as source code comprehension, in which state-of-the-art models are implemented to extract and express the meaning of code snippets automatically. However, such technologies are still struggling to tackle and comprehend the complex structures within industrial code, thus far from real-world applications. In the present work, we built an innovative and systematical framework, emphasizing the problem of complexity in code comprehension and further software engineering. Upon automatic data collection from the latest Linux kernel source code, we modeled code structures as complex networks through token extraction and relation parsing. Comprehensive analysis of complexity further revealed the density and scale of network-based code representations. Our work constructed the first large-scale dataset from industrial-strength software code for downstream software engineering tasks including code comprehension, and incorporated complex network theory into code-level investigations of software development for the first time. In the longer term, the proposed methodology could play significant roles in the entire software engineering process, powering software design, coding, debugging, testing, and sustaining by redefining and embracing complexity.

A Multilayer Neural Network Merging Image Preprocessing and Pattern Recognition by Integrating Diffusion and Drift Memristors

With the development of research on novel memristor model and device, neural networks by integrating various memristor models have become a hot research topic recently. However, state-of-the-art works still build such neural networks using drift memristor only. Furthermore, some other related works are only applied to a few individual applications including pattern recognition and edge detection. In this paper, a novel kind of multilayer neural network is proposed, in which diffusion and drift memristor models are applied to construct a system merging image preprocessing and pattern recognition. Specifically, the entire network consists of two diffusion memristive cellular layers for image preprocessing and one drift memristive feedforward layer for pattern recognition. Experimental results show that good recognition accuracy of noisy MNIST is obtained due to the fusion of image preprocessing and pattern recognition. Moreover, owing to high-efficiency in-memory computing and brief spiking encoding methods, high processing speed, high throughput, and few hardware resources of the entire network are achieved.

Bottomonium spectrum in the relativistic flux tube model

The bottomonium spectrum is far from being established. The structures of higher vector states, including the $Υ(10580)$, $Υ(10860)$, and $Υ(11020)$ states, are still in dispute. In addition, whether the $Υ(10750)$ signal which was recently observed by the Belle Collaboration is a normal $b\bar{b}$ state or not should be examined. Faced with such a situation, we carried out a systematic investigation of the bottomonium spectrum in the scheme of the relativistic flux tube (RFT) model. A Chew-Frautschi like formula was derived analytically for the spin average mass of bottomonium states. We further incorporated the spin-dependent interactions and obtained a complete bottomonium spectrum. We found that the most established bottomonium states can be explained in the RFT scheme. The $Υ(10750)$, $Υ(10860)$, and $Υ(11020)$ could be predominantly the $3^3D_1$, $5^3S_1$, and $4^3D_1$ states, respectively. Our predicted masses of $1F$ and $1G$ $b\bar{b}$ states are in agreement with the results given by the method of lattice QCD, which can be tested by experiments in future. We also compared the RFT model with the quark potential model in detail. The differences of these two kinds of models were discussed.

Direction Finding of Electromagnetic Sources on a Sparse Cross-Dipole Array Using One-Bit Measurements

Sparse array arrangement has been widely used in vector-sensor arrays because of increased degree-of-freedoms for identifying more sources than sensors. For large-size sparse vector-sensor arrays, one-bit measurements can further reduce the receiver system complexity by using low-resolution ADCs. In this paper, we present a sparse cross-dipole array with one-bit measurements to estimate Direction of Arrivals (DOA) of electromagnetic sources. Based on the independence assumption of sources, we establish the relation between the covariance matrix of one-bit measurements and that of unquantized measurements by Bussgang Theorem. Then we develop a Spatial-Smooth MUSIC (SS-MUSIC) based method, One-Bit MUSIC (OB-MUSIC), to estimate the DOAs. By jointly utilizing the covariance matrices of two dipole arrays, we find that OB-MUSIC is robust against polarization states. We also derive the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of DOA estimation for the proposed scheme. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze the applicability of the independence assumption of sources, which is the fundamental of the proposed and other typical methods, and verify the assumption in typical communication applications. Numerical results show that, with the same number of sensors, one-bit sparse cross-dipole arrays have comparable performance with unquantized uniform linear arrays and thus provide a compromise between the DOA estimation performance and the system complexity.

Fully Memristive Spiking-Neuron Learning Framework and its Applications on Pattern Recognition and Edge Detection

Fully memristive spiking-neuron learning framework, which uses drift and diffusion memristor models as axon and dendrite respectively, becomes a hot topic recently with the development of memristor devices. Normally, some other devices like resistor or capacitor are still necessary on recent works of fully memristive learning framework. However, theoretically, one neuron needs axon and dendrite only, which makes technique process simpler and learning framework more similar to biologic brain. In this paper, a fully memristive spiking-neuron learning framework is introduced, in which a neuron structure is just built of one drift and one diffusion memristive models. To verify it merits, a feedforward neural network for pattern recognition and a cellular neural network for edge detection are designed. Experiment results show that compared to other memristive neural networks, our framework's the processing speed is much faster and the hardware resource is saved in pattern recognition due to its simple structure. Further due to the dynamic filtering function of diffusion memristor model in our learning framework, its peak signal noise ratio (PSNR) is much higher than traditional algorithms in edge detection.

NetSecCC: A Scalable and Fault-tolerant Architecture without Outsourcing Cloud Network Security

Modern cloud computing platforms based on virtual machine monitors carry a variety of complex business that present many network security vulnerabilities. At present, the traditional architecture employs a number of security devices at front-end of cloud computing to protect its network security. Under the new environment, however, this approach can not meet the needs of cloud security. New cloud security vendors and academia also made great efforts to solve network security of cloud computing, unfortunately, they also cannot provide a perfect and effective method to solve this problem. We introduce a novel network security architecture for cloud computing (NetSecCC) that addresses this problem. NetSecCC not only provides an effective solution for network security issues of cloud computing, but also greatly improves in scalability, fault-tolerant, resource utilization, etc. We have implemented a proof-of-concept prototype about NetSecCC and proved by experiments that NetSecCC is an effective architecture with minimal performance overhead that can be applied to the extensive practical promotion in cloud computing.

Einstein Field Equation: the Root of All Evil? Quantum Gravity, Solar Application and the Prediction on Gravity Probe B

The starting point of quantum mechanics is the relationship between energy and momentum: energy is proportional to the squared momentum! As a result, energy and momentum have not been treated equally. The wave equation required by quantization is a differential equation which accordingly, does not treat time and space equally. As a result, the Planck constant is not canceled out from the two sides of the equation. Dr. He's gravity is the local bending of background space-time which as suggested by Einstein, can be described by a differential form of second order, and treats time and space equally. Therefore, the Planck constant is completely canceled out in the resulting wave equation. In other words, the quantization of gravity simply does not need the Planck constant!

Rational Galaxy Structure and its Disturbance

Why is there little dust in elliptical galaxies? Firstly, the universe is rational and the rationality is the proportional density distribution in any independent galaxy. Proportion means that the density distribution of stars is orderly. For example, there are four giants standing in array. Their heights are A, B, C, D, respectively, and A, B stand in the first row from left to right, C, D in the second row from left to right. Proportion requires that A divided by C be equal to B divided by D. Rational structures are smooth 2- (or 3-) dimensional structures, which are either circularly (spherically) symmetric with respect to the center point, or bilaterally symmetric. Secondly, spiral galaxy arms are linearly shaped, which are neither circularly symmetric nor bilaterally symmetric. Therefore, arms are not rational structures. Arm patterns exist only in spiral galaxies and they are weak compared with the main disk structure. Therefore, the presence of arm structure is the disturbance to the rational structure. Because arm patterns exist only in spiral galaxies and only spiral galaxies present dust, I come to the critical answer to the above question: any disturbance to rational structure produces cosmic dust. From now on we call the disturbance to rational structure the cosmic impulse. Therefore, the universe is originated not only rationally but also impulsively.

The Faulty Assumptions of the Expanding-Universe Model vs. the Simple and Consistent Principles of a Flat-Universe Model -- with Moving Pisa Tower Experiment which Tests General Relativity

Mach Principle presents the absolute universe. For example, when Einstein stood on the ground and relaxed, his arms fell down naturally. However, if he rotated his body then his arms were lifted up as the rotation was faster and faster. Mach principle is that the matter of the whole universe can affect local dynamic systems. That is, the matter of the whole universe sets up the local absolute reference frames. However, Einstein's general theory of relativity is against the absolute reference frames of Mach Principle.
