Continuous-spin field propagator and interaction with matter

Action principles for the single and double valued continuous-spin representations of the Poincare group have been recently proposed in a Segal-like formulation. We address three related issues: First, we explain how to obtain these actions directly from the Fronsdal-like and Fang-Fronsdal-like equations by solving the traceless constraints in Fourier space. Second, we introduce a current, similar to the one of Berends, Burgers and Van Dam, which is bilinear in a pair of scalar matter fields, to which the bosonic continuous-spin field can couple minimally. Third, we investigate the current exchange mediated by a continuous-spin particle obtained from this action principle and investigate whether it propagates the right degrees of freedom, and whether it reproduces the known result for massless higher-spin fields in the helicity limit.

Translation invariant time-dependent massive gravity: Hamiltonian analysis

The canonical structure of the massive gravity in the first order moving frame formalism is studied. We work in the simplified context of translation invariant fields, with mass terms given by general non-derivative interactions, invariant under the diagonal Lorentz group, depending on the moving frame as well as a fixed reference frame. We prove that the only mass terms which give 5 propagating degrees of freedom are the dRGT mass terms, namely those which are linear in the lapse. We also complete the Hamiltonian analysis with the dynamical evolution of the system.

A note on "symmetric" vielbeins in bimetric, massive, perturbative and non perturbative gravities

We consider a manifold endowed with two different vielbeins $E^{A}{}_μ$ and $L^{A}{}_μ$ corresponding to two different metrics $g_{μν}$ and $f_{μν}$. Such a situation arises generically in bimetric or massive gravity (including the recently discussed version of de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley), as well as in perturbative quantum gravity where one vielbein parametrizes the background space-time and the other the dynamical degrees of freedom. We determine the conditions under which the relation $g^{μν} E^{A}{}_μ L^{B}{}_ν = g^{μν} E^{B}{}_μ L^{A}{}_ν$ can be imposed (or the "Deser-van Nieuwenhuizen" gauge chosen). We clarify and correct various statements which have been made about this issue.

Boundary action of free AdS higher-spin gauge fields and the holographic correspondence

We determine the boundary terms of the free higher-spin action which reproduce the AdS Fronsdal equations in an AdS manifold with a finite distance boundary. The boundary terms are further constrained by the gauge invariance of the total action. We show that, for spins larger than two, no local boundary term can restore the full gauge symmetry, and the broken symmetry corresponds to higher-spin Weyl transformations on the boundary CFT. The boundary action is used for the evaluation of the on-shell higher-spin AdS action in terms of the boundary data given by a conformal higher-spin field.

Comments on higher-spin holography

The conjectured holographic duality between vector models with quartic interaction and higher-spin field theory in the bulk is reviewed, with emphasis on some versions and generalisations (higher dimensions, beyond the singlet sector, etc) which have not been much investigated yet. The strongest form of the conjecture assumes that it holds for any (not necessarily large) number of massless scalar fields and for any value of the coupling constant. Since the quartic interaction is of double-trace type, the exact duality (for any value of the coupling constant) automatically follows from its validity at the Gaussian fixed point (for vanishing coupling constant). The validity of the latter also implies that unbroken higher spin symmetries should prevent quantum corrections in the bulk.

Effective action in a higher-spin background

We consider a free massless scalar field coupled to an infinite tower of background higher-spin gauge fields via minimal coupling to the traceless conserved currents. The set of Abelian gauge transformations is deformed to the non-Abelian group of unitary operators acting on the scalar field. The gauge invariant effective action is computed perturbatively in the external fields. The structure of the various (divergent or finite) terms is determined. In particular, the quadratic part of the logarithmically divergent (or of the finite) term is expressed in terms of curvatures and related to conformal higher-spin gravity. The generalized higher-spin Weyl anomalies are also determined. The relation with the theory of interacting higher-spin gauge fields on anti de Sitter spacetime via the holographic correspondence is discussed.

On higher spin interactions with matter

Cubic couplings between a complex scalar field and a tower of symmetric tensor gauge fields of all ranks are investigated. A symmetric conserved current, bilinear in the scalar field and containing r derivatives, is provided for any rank r>0 and is related to the corresponding rigid symmetry of Klein-Gordon's Lagrangian. Following Noether's method, the tensor gauge fields interact with the scalar field via minimal coupling to the conserved currents. The corresponding cubic vertex is written in a compact form by making use of Weyl's symbols. This enables the explicit computation of the non-Abelian gauge symmetry group, the current-current interaction between scalar particles mediated by any gauge field and the corresponding four-scalar elastic scattering tree amplitude. The exact summation of these amplitudes for an infinite tower of gauge fields is possible and several examples for a definite choice of the coupling constants are provided where the total amplitude exhibits fast (e.g. exponential) fall-off in the high-energy limit. Nevertheless, the long range interaction potential is dominated by the exchange of low-spin particles in the low-energy limit.

Unconstrained Higher Spins of Mixed Symmetry. II. Fermi Fields

This paper is a sequel of arXiv:0810.4350 [hep-th], and is also devoted to the local "metric-like" unconstrained Lagrangians and field equations for higher-spin fields of mixed symmetry in flat space. Here we complete the previous constrained on-shell formulation of Labastida for Fermi fields, deriving the corresponding constrained Lagrangians both via the Bianchi identities and via the requirement of self-adjointness. We also describe two types of unconstrained Lagrangian formulations: a "minimal" one, containing higher derivatives of the compensator fields, and another non-minimal one, containing only one-derivative terms. We identify classes of these systems that are invariant under Weyl-like symmetry transformations.
