Spinor-helicity representations of (A)dS$_4$ particles of any mass

The spinor-helicity representations of massive and (partially-)massless particles in four dimensional (Anti-) de Sitter spacetime are studied within the framework of the dual pair correspondence. We show that the dual groups (aka "little groups") of the AdS and dS groups are respectively $O(2N)$ and $O^*(2N)$. For $N=1$, the generator of the dual algebra $\mathfrak{so}(2)\cong \mathfrak{so}^*(2) \cong \mathfrak{u}(1)$ corresponds to the helicity operator, and the spinor-helicity representation describes massless particles in (A)dS$_4$. For $N=2$, the dual algebra is composed of two ideals, $\mathfrak{s}$ and $\mathfrak{m}_Λ$. The former ideal $\mathfrak{s}\cong \mathfrak{so}(3)$ fixes the spin of the particle, while the mass is determined by the latter ideal $\mathfrak{m}_Λ$, which is isomorphic to $\mathfrak{so}(2,1)$, $\mathfrak{iso}(2)$ or $\mathfrak{so}(3)$ depending on the cosmological constant being positive, zero or negative. In the case of a positive cosmological constant, namely dS$_4$, the spinor-helicity representation contains all massive particles corresponding to the principal series representations and the partially-massless particles corresponding to the discrete series representations leaving out only the light massive particles corresponding to the complementary series representations. The zero and negative cosmological constant cases, which had been addressed in earlier references, are also discussed briefly. Finally, we consider the multilinear form of helicity spinors invariant under (A)dS group, which can be served for the (A)dS counterpart of the scattering amplitude, and discuss technical differences and difficulties of the (A)dS cases compared to the flat spacetime case.

Unfolding Conformal Geometry

Conformal geometry is studied using the unfolded formulation à la Vasiliev. Analyzing the first-order consistency of the unfolded equations, we identify the content of zero-forms as the spin-two off-shell Fradkin-Tseytlin module of $\mathfrak{so}(2,d)$. We sketch the nonlinear structure of the equations and explain how Weyl invariant densities, which Type-B Weyl anomaly consist of, could be systematically computed within the unfolded formulation. The unfolded equation for conformal geometry is also shown to be reduced to various on-shell gravitational systems by requiring additional algebraic constraints.

A note on Faddeev--Popov action for doubled-yet-gauged particle and graded Poisson geometry

The section condition of Double Field Theory has been argued to mean that doubled coordinates are gauged: a gauge orbit represents a single physical point. In this note, we consider a doubled and at the same time gauged particle action, and show that its BRST formulation including Faddeev--Popov ghosts matches with the graded Poisson geometry that has been recently used to describe the symmetries of Double Field Theory. Besides, by requiring target spacetime diffeomorphisms at the quantum level, we derive quantum corrections to the classical action involving dilaton, which might be comparable with the Fradkin--Tseytlin term on string worldsheet.

Dual Pair Correspondence in Physics: Oscillator Realizations and Representations

We study general aspects of the reductive dual pair correspondence, also known as Howe duality. We make an explicit and systematic treatment, where we first derive the oscillator realizations of all irreducible dual pairs: $(GL(M,\mathbb R), GL(N,\mathbb R))$, $(GL(M,\mathbb C), GL(N,\mathbb C))$, $(U^*(2M), U^*(2N))$, $(U(M_+,M_-), U(N_+,N_-))$, $(O(N_+,N_-),Sp(2M,\mathbb R))$, $(O(N,\mathbb C), Sp(2M,\mathbb C))$ and $(O^*(2N), Sp(M_+,M_-))$. Then, we decompose the Fock space into irreducible representations of each group in the dual pairs for the cases where one member of the pair is compact as well as the first non-trivial cases of where it is non-compact. We discuss the relevance of these representations in several physical applications throughout this analysis. In particular, we discuss peculiarities of their branching properties. Finally, closed-form expressions relating all Casimir operators of two groups in a pair are established.

On the Holography of Free Yang-Mills

We study the AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ duality where the boundary CFT is free Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(N). At the planar level we use the spectrum and correlation functions of the boundary theory to explicate features of the bulk theory. Further, by computing the one-loop partition function of the bulk theory using the methods of arXiv:1603.05387, we argue that the bulk coupling constant should be shifted to $N^2$ from $N^2-1$. Similar conclusions are reached by studying the dualities in thermal AdS$_5$ with $S^1\times S^3$ boundary.

One-loop Test of Free SU(N) Adjoint Model Holography

We consider the holographic duality where the CFT side is given by $SU(N)$ adjoint free scalar field theory. Compared to the vector models, the set of single trace operators is immensely extended so that the corresponding AdS theory also contains infinitely many massive higher spin fields on top of the massless ones. We compute the one-loop vacuum energy of these AdS fields to test this duality at the subleading order in large $N$ expansion. The determination of the bulk vacuum energy requires a proper scheme to sum up the infinitely many contributions. For that, we develop a new method and apply it first to calculate the vacuum energies for the first few `Regge trajectories' in AdS$_4$ and AdS$_5$. In considering the full vacuum energy of AdS theory dual to a matrix model CFT, we find that there exist more than one available prescriptions for the one-loop vacuum energy. Taking a particular prescription, we determine the full vacuum energy of the AdS$_5$ theory, whereas the AdS$_4$ calculation still remains technically prohibitive. This result shows that the full vacuum energy of the AdS$_5$ theory coincides with minus of the free energy of a single scalar field on the boundary. This is analogous to the $O(N)$ vector model case, hence suggests an interpretation of the \emph{positive} shift of the bulk coupling constant, i.e. from $N^2-1$ to $N^2$.

Rainbow Vacua of Colored Higher Spin Gravity in Three Dimensions

We study the color-decoration of higher-spin (anti)-de Sitter gravity in three dimensions. We show that the rainbow vacua, which we found recently for the colored gravity theory, also pertain in the colored higher-spin theory. The color singlet spin-two plays the role of first fundamental form (metric). The difference is that when spontaneous breaking of color symmetry takes place, the Goldstone modes of massless spin-two combine with all other spins and become the maximal-depth partially massless fields of the highest spin in the theory, forming a Regge trajectory.

Rainbow Valley of Colored (Anti) de Sitter Gravity in Three Dimensions

We propose a theory of three-dimensional (anti) de Sitter gravity carrying Chan-Paton color charges. We define the theory by Chern-Simons formulation with the gauge algebra $(\mathfrak{gl}_{2}\oplus \mathfrak{gl}_{2})\otimes \mathfrak{u}(N)$, obtaining a color-decorated version of interacting spin-one and spin-two fields. We also describe the theory in metric formulation and show that, among $N^{2}$ massless spin-two fields, only the singlet one plays the role of metric graviton whereas the rest behave as \emph{colored spinning matter} that strongly interacts at large $N$. Remarkably, these \emph{colored spinning matter} acts as Higgs field and generates a non-trivial potential of staircase shape. At each extremum labelled by $k = 0, \ldots, [\frac{N-1}2]$, the $\mathfrak{u}(N)$ color gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken down to $\mathfrak{u}(N-k)\oplus \mathfrak{u}(k)$ and provides different (A)dS backgrounds with the cosmological constants $\big(\frac{N}{N-2k}\big)^{2}\,Ł$\,. When this symmetry breaking takes place, the spin-two Goldstone modes combine with (or are eaten by) the spin-one gauge fields to become partially-massless spin-two fields. We discuss various aspects of this theory and highlight physical implications.

Spinor-Helicity Three-Point Amplitudes from Local Cubic Interactions

We make an explicit link between the cubic interactions of off-shell fields and the on-shell three-point amplitudes in four dimensions. Both the cubic interactions and the on-shell three-point amplitudes had been independently classified in the literature, but their relation has not been made explicit. The aim of this note is to provide such a relation and discuss similarities and differences of their constructions. For the completeness of our analysis, we also derive the covariant form of all parity-odd massless vertices.

Weyl Action of Two-Column Mixed-Symmetry Field and Its Factorization Around (A)dS Space

We investigate the four-derivative free Weyl action for two-column mixed-symmetry field that makes use of maximal gauge symmetries. In flat space, the action can be uniquely determined from gauge and Weyl (trace shift) symmetry requirements. We show that there is a smooth and unique deformation of the flat action to (A)dS which keeps the same amount of gauge symmetries. This action admits a factorization into two distinct two-derivative actions having gauge parameters of different Young diagrams. Hence, this factorization pattern naturally extends that of the Weyl actions of symmetric higher spin fields to mixed-symmetry cases. The mass-deformation for these actions can be realized preserving one of the gauge symmetries. Although generically non-unitary, in special dimensions, unitarity is achieved selecting different mass deformations for dS and AdS. We consider particular examples of our construction such as New Massive Gravity in three dimensions, linearized bigravity in four dimensions and their arbitrary dimensional generalizations.

Notes on higher-spin algebras: minimal representations and structure constants

The higher-spin (HS) algebras so far known can be interpreted as the symmetries of the minimal representation of the isometry algebra. After discussing this connection briefly, we generalize this concept to any classical Lie algebras and consider the corresponding HS algebras. For sp(2N) and so(N), the minimal representations are unique so we get unique HS algebras. For sl(N), the minimal representation has one-parameter family, so does the corresponding HS algebra. The so(N) HS algebra is what underlies the Vasiliev theory while the sl(2) one coincides with the 3D HS algebra hs[lambda]. Finally, we derive the explicit expression of the structure constant of these algebras --- more precisely, their bilinear and trilinear forms. Several consistency checks are carried out for our results.

Partially-massless higher-spin algebras and their finite-dimensional truncations

The global symmetry algebras of partially-massless (PM) higher-spin (HS) fields in (A)dS$_{d+1}$ are studied. The algebras involving PM generators up to depth $2\,(\ell-1)$ are defined as the maximal symmetries of free conformal scalar field with $2\,\ell$ order wave equation in $d$ dimensions. We review the construction of these algebras by quotienting certain ideals in the universal enveloping algebra of $(A)dS_{d+1}$ isometries. We discuss another description in terms of Howe duality and derive the formula for computing trace in these algebras. This enables us to explicitly calculate the bilinear form for this one-parameter family of algebras. In particular, the bilinear form shows the appearance of additional ideal for any non-negative integer values of $\ell-d/2\,$, which coincides with the annihilator of the one-row $\ell$-box Young diagram representation of $\mathfrak{so}_{d+2}\,$. Hence, the corresponding finite-dimensional coset algebra spanned by massless and PM generators is equivalent to the symmetries of this representation.

Cubic-interaction-induced deformations of higher-spin symmetries

The deformations of higher-spin symmetries induced by cubic interactions of symmetric massless bosonic fields are analyzed within the metric-like formalism. Our analysis amends the existing classification according to gauge-algebra deformations taking into account also gauge-transformation deformations. In particular, we identify a class of couplings which leave the gauge algebra Abelian but deform one (out of three) gauge transformation, and another class of couplings which deform all three gauge transformations in (A)dS but only two in the flat-space limit. The former class is related to higher-spin algebra multiplets (representations of the global algebra) together with the massless-massive-massive couplings, which we also briefly discuss. The latter class is what makes (A)dS a distinguished background for higher-spin interactions and includes in particular the gravitational interactions of higher-spin fields, retrospectively accounting for the Fradkin-Vasiliev solution to the Aragon-Deser problem. We also study the restriction of gauge symmetries to global symmetries (higher-spin algebra) discussing the invariant bilinear form and the cyclicity of the structure constants. A possible generalization of the analysis to partially-massless fields is also commented.

No-Go Theorems for Unitary and Interacting Partially Massless Spin-Two Fields

We examine the generic theory of a partially massless (PM) spin-two field interacting with gravity in four dimensions from a bottom-up perspective. By analyzing the most general form of the Lagrangian, we first show that if such a theory exists, its de Sitter background must admit either so(1, 5) or so(2, 4) global symmetry depending on the relative sign of the kinetic terms: the former for a positive sign the latter for a negative sign. Further analysis reveals that the coupling constant of the PM cubic self-interaction must be fixed with a purely imaginary number in the case of a positive sign. We conclude that there cannot exist a unitary theory of a PM spin-two field coupled to Einstein gravity with a perturbatively local Lagrangian. In the case of a negative sign we recover conformal gravity. As a special case of our analysis, it is shown that the PM limit of massive gravity also lacks the PM gauge symmetry.

A Calculus for Higher Spin Interactions

Higher spin theories can be efficiently described in terms of auxiliary Stückelberg or projective space field multiplets. By considering how higher spin models couple to scale, these approaches can be unified in a conformal geometry/tractor calculus framework. We review these methods and apply them to higher spin vertices to obtain a generating function for massless, massive and partially massless three-point interactions.

A note on higher-derivative actions for free higher-spin fields

Higher-derivative theories of free higher-spin fields are investigated focusing on their symmetries. Generalizing familiar two-derivative constrained formulations, we first construct less-constrained Einstein-like and Maxwell-like higher-derivative actions. Then, we construct Weyl-like actions - the actions admitting constrained Weyl symmetries - with different numbers of derivatives. They are presented in a factorized form making use of Einstein-like and Maxwell-like tensors. The last (highest-derivative) member of the hierarchy of the Weyl-like actions coincides with the Fradkin-Tseytlin conformal higher-spin action in four dimensions.

Boundary action of free AdS higher-spin gauge fields and the holographic correspondence

We determine the boundary terms of the free higher-spin action which reproduce the AdS Fronsdal equations in an AdS manifold with a finite distance boundary. The boundary terms are further constrained by the gauge invariance of the total action. We show that, for spins larger than two, no local boundary term can restore the full gauge symmetry, and the broken symmetry corresponds to higher-spin Weyl transformations on the boundary CFT. The boundary action is used for the evaluation of the on-shell higher-spin AdS action in terms of the boundary data given by a conformal higher-spin field.

Comments on higher-spin holography

The conjectured holographic duality between vector models with quartic interaction and higher-spin field theory in the bulk is reviewed, with emphasis on some versions and generalisations (higher dimensions, beyond the singlet sector, etc) which have not been much investigated yet. The strongest form of the conjecture assumes that it holds for any (not necessarily large) number of massless scalar fields and for any value of the coupling constant. Since the quartic interaction is of double-trace type, the exact duality (for any value of the coupling constant) automatically follows from its validity at the Gaussian fixed point (for vanishing coupling constant). The validity of the latter also implies that unbroken higher spin symmetries should prevent quantum corrections in the bulk.

Generating functions of (partially-)massless higher-spin cubic interactions

Generating functions encoding cubic interactions of (partially-)massless higher-spin fields are provided within the ambient-space formalism. They satisfy a system of higher-order partial differential equations that can be explicitly solved due to their factorized form. We find that the number of consistent couplings increases whenever the squares of the field masses take some integer values (in units of the cosmological constant) and satisfy certain conditions. Moreover, it is shown that only the supplemental solutions can give rise to non-Abelian deformations of the gauge symmetries. The presence of these conditions on the masses is a distinctive feature of (A)dS interactions that has in general no direct counterpart in flat space.

On the cubic interactions of massive and partially-massless higher spins in (A)dS

Cubic interactions of massive and partially-massless totally-symmetric higher-spin fields in any constant-curvature background of dimension greater than three are investigated. Making use of the ambient-space formalism, the consistency condition for the traceless and transverse parts of the parity-invariant interactions is recast into a system of partial differential equations. The latter can be explicitly solved for given s_1-s_2-s_3 couplings and the 2-2-2 and 3-3-2 examples are provided in detail for general choices of the masses. On the other hand, the general solutions for the interactions involving massive and massless fields are expressed in a compact form as generating functions of all the consistent couplings. The Stückelberg formulation of the cubic interactions as well as their massless limits are also analyzed.

Effective action in a higher-spin background

We consider a free massless scalar field coupled to an infinite tower of background higher-spin gauge fields via minimal coupling to the traceless conserved currents. The set of Abelian gauge transformations is deformed to the non-Abelian group of unitary operators acting on the scalar field. The gauge invariant effective action is computed perturbatively in the external fields. The structure of the various (divergent or finite) terms is determined. In particular, the quadratic part of the logarithmically divergent (or of the finite) term is expressed in terms of curvatures and related to conformal higher-spin gravity. The generalized higher-spin Weyl anomalies are also determined. The relation with the theory of interacting higher-spin gauge fields on anti de Sitter spacetime via the holographic correspondence is discussed.

On higher spin interactions with matter

Cubic couplings between a complex scalar field and a tower of symmetric tensor gauge fields of all ranks are investigated. A symmetric conserved current, bilinear in the scalar field and containing r derivatives, is provided for any rank r>0 and is related to the corresponding rigid symmetry of Klein-Gordon's Lagrangian. Following Noether's method, the tensor gauge fields interact with the scalar field via minimal coupling to the conserved currents. The corresponding cubic vertex is written in a compact form by making use of Weyl's symbols. This enables the explicit computation of the non-Abelian gauge symmetry group, the current-current interaction between scalar particles mediated by any gauge field and the corresponding four-scalar elastic scattering tree amplitude. The exact summation of these amplitudes for an infinite tower of gauge fields is possible and several examples for a definite choice of the coupling constants are provided where the total amplitude exhibits fast (e.g. exponential) fall-off in the high-energy limit. Nevertheless, the long range interaction potential is dominated by the exchange of low-spin particles in the low-energy limit.
