Measurement of Photocarrier Mean Free Path via Speckled Laser Pump -- Transient Fourier Microscopy Probe

The mean free path of photocarriers is a crucial parameter for material design, device optimization, and new optoelectronics applications. Currently, this parameter remains unknown for many materials, and experimental means available for its measurement are considerably lacking. Meanwhile, it remains an unclear issue whether the mean free path of the photogenerated high-energy hot carriers is significantly different from that of the localequilibrium-state carriers near the Fermi surface or around the band edge. Based on the concept of transient grating Fourier transform and utilizing a virtual lock-in amplification technique, we proposed and demonstrated an efficient experimental technique for measuring the mean free path of photocarriers. This method has facilitated direct observation of the photocarrier transport behavior across the transition between diffusive and ballistic motion, from which we surprisingly find that the mean free path of photogenerated hot carriers in Silicon membrane and GaAs quantum well can reach micron scale, more than an order of magnitude larger compared to the electrically-measured one. This work provides new ideas for characterization of photoelectronic devices under operating status and is expected to greatly enhance the understanding of the photocarrier transport process in opto-electronic or photonic materials.

Novel Materials and Concepts for Next-Generation High Power Target Applications

Novel beam-intercepting materials and targetry concepts are essential to improve the performance, reliability and operation lifetimes of next generation multi-megawatt (multi-MW) accelerator target facilities. The beam-intercepting materials and components must sustain an order-of-magnitude increase in particle beam intensities and are beyond the current state-of-the-art. With conventional materials already limiting the scope of experiments, it is crucial to investigate novel target materials, technologies and concepts that will satisfy the requirements and maximize the physics benefits of future energy and intensity frontier experiments. This paper provides an overview of the related targetry R&D required over the next 10 years to support and enable future high-power accelerator target facilities.

Direct Growth Graphene on Cu Nanoparticles by Chemical Vapor Deposition as Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrate for Label-Free Detection of Adenosine

We present a graphene/Cu nanoparticle hybrids (G/CuNPs) system as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for adenosine detection. The Cu nanoparticles wrapped around a monolayer graphene shell were directly synthesized on flat quartz by chemical vapor deposition in a mixture of methane and hydrogen. The G/CuNPs showed an excellent SERS enhancement activity for adenosine. The minimum detected concentration of the adenosine in serum was demonstrated as low as 5 nM, and the calibration curve showed a good linear response from 5 to 500 nM. The capability of SERS detection of adenosine in real normal human urine samples based on G/CuNPs was also investigated and the characteristic peaks of adenosine were still recognizable. The reproducible and the ultrasensitive enhanced Raman signals could be due to the presence of an ultrathin graphene layer. The graphene shell was able to enrich and fix the adenosine molecules, which could also efficiently maintain chemical and optical stability of G/CuNPs. Based on G/CuNPs system, the ultrasensitive SERS detection of adenosine in varied matrices was expected for the practical applications of medicine and biotechnology

Deflections in Magnet Fringe Fields

A transverse multipole expansion is derived, including the longitudinal components necessarily present in regions of varying magnetic field profile. It can be used for exact numerical orbit following through the fringe field regions of magnets whose end designs introduce no extraneous components, {\it i.e.} fields not required to be present by Maxwell's equations. Analytic evaluations of the deflections are obtained in various approximations. Mainly emphasized is a ``straight-line approximation'', in which particle orbits are treated as straight lines through the fringe field regions. This approximation leads to a readily-evaluated figure of merit, the ratio of r.m.s. end deflection to nominal body deflection, that can be used to determine whether or not a fringe field can be neglected. Deflections in ``critical'' cases (e.g. near intersection regions) are analysed in the same approximation.
