Double core-hole spectroscopy of transient plasmas produced in the interaction of ultraintense x-ray pulses with neon

Double core-hole (DCH) spectroscopy is investigated systematically for neon atomic system in the interaction with ultraintense x-ray pulses with photon energy from 937 eV to 2000 eV. A time-dependent rate equation, implemented in the detailed level accounting approximation, is utilized to study the dynamical evolution of the level population and emission properties of the highly transient plasmas. For x-ray pulses with photon energy in the range of 937-1030 eV, where $1s\rightarrow 2p$ resonance absorption from single core-hole (SCH) states of neon charge states exist, inner-shell resonant absorption (IRA) effects play important roles in the time evolution of population and DCH spectroscopy. Such IRA physical effects are illustrated in detail by investigating the interaction of x-ray pulses at a photon energy of 944 eV, which corresponds to the $1s\rightarrow 2p$ resonant absorption from the SCH states ($1s2s^22p^4$, $1s2s2p^5$ and $1s2p^6$) of Ne$^{3+}$. After averaging over the space and time distribution of the x-ray pulses, DCH spectroscopy at photon energies of 937, 944, 955, 968, 980, and 990 eV (corresponding to the $1s\rightarrow 2p$ resonance energies of Ne$^{2+}$-Ne$^{7+}$, respectively) are studied in detail. The complex mechanisms of producing the DCH states are discussed, taking the DCH spectroscopy at 937 and 980 eV as examples. For photon energy larger than 1362 eV, there are no resonance absorption in the interaction, resulting in a similar physical picture of DCH spectroscopy. The dominant DCH states are due to higher ionization stages of Ne$^{7+}$-Ne$^{9+}$, while the DCH spectroscopy from lower charge states Ne$^{2+}$-Ne$^{6+}$ are much weaker. With the increase of x-ray photon energy, the contributions from the lower charge states become larger.

Quantum coherence in the dynamical excitation, ionization, and decaying of neon gas induced by X-ray laser

We develop a large scale quantum master equation approach to describe dynamical processes of practical open quantum systems driven by both coherent and stochastic interactions by including more than one thousand true states of the systems, motivated by the development of highly bright and fully coherent lasers in the X-ray wavelength regime. The method combines the processes of coherent dynamics induced by the X-ray laser and incoherent relaxations due to spontaneous emissions, Auger decays, and electronic collisions. As examples, theoretical investigation of {\it real} coherent dynamics of inner-shell electrons of a neon gas, irradiated by a high-intensity X-ray laser with a full temporal coherence, is carried out with the approach. In contrast to the rate equation treatment, we find that coherence can suppress the multiphoton absorptions of a neon gas in the ultra-intense X-ray pulse, due to coherence-induced Rabi oscillations and power broadening effects. We study the influence of coherence on ionization processes of neon, and directly prove that sequential single-photon processes for both outer- and inner-shell electrons dominate the ionizations for the recently typical experiments with a laser intensity of $\approx10^{18}$ ${\rm W/cm^2}$. We discuss possible experimental implementations such as signatures for coherent evolution of inner-shell electrons via resonance fluorescence processes. The approach can also be applied to many different practical open quantum systems in atomic, quantum optical, and cold matter systems, which are treated qualitatively by a few-level master equation model before.

Electron impact collision strengths in Si IX, Si X and Si XI

Electron impact collision strengths among 560 levels of Si IX, 320 levels of Si X and 350 levels of Si XI have been calculated using the Flexible Atomic Code (FAC) of Gu (2003). Collision strengths $Ω$ at ten scattered electron energies covering an entire energy range, namely 10, 50, 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 eV, are reported. Assuming a Maxwellian energy distribution, effective collision strengths $Υ$ are obtained at a finer electron temperature grids of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 MK, which covers the typical temperature range of astrophysical hot plasma. Additionally, radiative rates $A$ and weighted oscillator strengths $gf$ are given for more possible transitions among these levels. Comparisons of our results with available predictions reported in earlier literatures are made, and the accuracy of the data is assessed. Most transitions exhibit a better agreement, whereas large differences in $gf$ appear for a few cases, which are due to the different inclusion of configuration interaction in different theoretical calculations. In excitations among levels of ground and lower excited configurations, large discrepancies of $Υ$ maybe resulted from the consideration of resonance effects in earlier works.
