CFNS Ad-Hoc meeting on Radiative Corrections Whitepaper

Current precision scattering experiments and even more so many experiments planed for the Electron Ion Collider will be limited by systematics. From the theory side, a fundamental source of systematic uncertainty is the correct treatment of radiative effects. To gauge the current state of technique and knowledge, help the cross-pollination between different direction of nuclear physics, and to give input to the yellow report process, the community met in an ad-hoc workshop hosted by the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science, Stony Brook University. This whitepaper is a collection of contributions to this workshop.

Symbolic Semantic Segmentation and Interpretation of COVID-19 Lung Infections in Chest CT volumes based on Emergent Languages

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has resulted in a pandemic crippling the a breadth of services critical to daily life. Segmentation of lung infections in computerized tomography (CT) slices could be be used to improve diagnosis and understanding of COVID-19 in patients. Deep learning systems lack interpretability because of their black box nature. Inspired by human communication of complex ideas through language, we propose a symbolic framework based on emergent languages for the segmentation of COVID-19 infections in CT scans of lungs. We model the cooperation between two artificial agents - a Sender and a Receiver. These agents synergistically cooperate using emergent symbolic language to solve the task of semantic segmentation. Our game theoretic approach is to model the cooperation between agents unlike Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The Sender retrieves information from one of the higher layers of the deep network and generates a symbolic sentence sampled from a categorical distribution of vocabularies. The Receiver ingests the stream of symbols and cogenerates the segmentation mask. A private emergent language is developed that forms the communication channel used to describe the task of segmentation of COVID infections. We augment existing state of the art semantic segmentation architectures with our symbolic generator to form symbolic segmentation models. Our symbolic segmentation framework achieves state of the art performance for segmentation of lung infections caused by COVID-19. Our results show direct interpretation of symbolic sentences to discriminate between normal and infected regions, infection morphology and image characteristics. We show state of the art results for segmentation of COVID-19 lung infections in CT.

QCD and Hadron Physics

This document presents the recommendations and scientific conclusions from the Town Meeting on QCD and Hadronic Physics that took place in the period 13-15 September 2014 at Temple University as part of the NSAC 2014 Long Range Planning process. It highlights progress in hadron physics in the seven years since the 2007 Long Range Plan (LRP07), and presents a vision for the future by identifying key questions and plausible paths to solutions which should define our next decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (roughly 5 years) and longer term (beyond 10 years) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential in hadronic physics worldwide. In this connection, the potential of an electron ion collider is highlighted.

The 1-Jettiness DIS Spectrum: Factorization, Resummation, and Jet Algorithm Dependence

The 1-Jettiness (tau_1) event shape for Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS), allows for a quantitative and global description of the pattern of QCD radiation for single jet (J) production in electron-nucleus (N_A) collisions e^- + N_A \to e^- + J + X. It allows for precision studies of QCD and is a sensitive probe of nuclear structure and dynamics. The large transverse momentum (P_{J_T}) of the final state jet $J$, characterizes the hard scale in the problem. The region of phase space where tau_1 << P_{J_T}, corresponds to configurations where energetic radiation (E~ P_{J_T}) is only along either the single jet direction or the beam direction with only soft radiation (E ~ τ_1 <<P_{J_T}) in between. Thus, the restriction tau_1 << P_{J_T} corresponds to a veto on additional jets and leads to large Sudakov logarithms of τ_1/P_{J_T} that must be resummed. Based on a factorization framework, derived using the Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), we provide resummation results at the NNLL level of accuracy and match them onto the NLO result in fixed order perturbation theory, appropriate in the τ_1 \sim P_{J_T} region where additional jets and hard radiation are allowed. The τ_1-distribution depends on the jet algorithm used to find the leading jet in the region tau_1 ~ P_{J_T}, unlike the resummation region where this dependence is power suppressed in tau_1/P_{J_T} << 1. We give results for the entire tau_1 spectrum, with a smooth matching between the resummation region and fixed-order region, where we make use of the anti-kt jet algorithm. The 1-Jettiness event shape can be a powerful probe of nuclear and QCD dynamics at future electron-ion colliders and by analyzing existing HERA data.

Probing Gluonic Spin-Orbit Correlations in Photon Pair Production

We consider photon pair production in hadronic collisions at large mass and small transverse momentum of the pair, assuming that factorization in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions applies. The unpolarized cross section is found to have azimuthal angular dependencies that are generated by a gluonic version of the Boer-Mulders function. In addition, the single-transversely polarized cross section is sensitive to the gluon Sivers function. We present simple numerical estimates for the Boer-Mulders and Sivers effects in diphoton production at RHIC and find that the process would offer unique opportunities for exploring transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions.

Transverse momentum distribution of Upsilon production in hadronic collisions

We calculate the transverse momentum p_T distribution for production of the Upsilon states in hadronic reactions. For small $p_T (\leq M_Υ)$, we resum to all orders in the strong coupling alpha_s the process-independent large logarithmic contributions that arise from initial-state gluon showers. We demonstrate that the p_T distribution at low p_T is dominated by the region of small impact parameter b and that it may be computed reliably in perturbation theory. We express the cross section at large p_T by the alpha_s^3 lowest-order non-vanishing perturbative contribution. Our results are consistent with data from the Fermilab Tevatron collider.

Upsilon Transverse Momentum at Hadron Colliders

We predict the shape of the transverse momentum p_T spectrum of Upsilon production. The distribution at low p_T is dominated by the region of small impact parameter b and may be computed reliably in perturbation theory. We resum to all orders in the strong coupling alpha_s the process-independent large logarithmic contributions that arise from initial-state gluon showers in the small p_T (< M_Upsilon) region. The cross section at large p_T is represented by the alpha_s^3 lowest-order non-vanishing perturbative contribution.

Full transverse-momentum spectra of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs at LHC energies

The transverse momentum distribution of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs is calculated in QCD perturbation theory with all-order resummation. We argue that at LHC energies the results should be reliable for the entire transverse momentum range. We demonstrate that the transverse momentum distribution of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs is an advantageous source of constraints on the gluon distribution and its nuclear dependence.

Nonlinear corrections to the DGLAP equations in view of the HERA data

The effects of the first nonlinear corrections to the DGLAP evolution equations are studied by using the recent HERA data for the structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ of the free proton and the parton distributions from CTEQ5L and CTEQ6L as a baseline. By requiring a good fit to the H1 data, we determine initial parton distributions at $Q_0^2=1.4$ GeV$^2$ for the nonlinear scale evolution. We show that the nonlinear corrections improve the agreement with the $F_2(x,Q^2)$ data in the region of $x\sim 3\cdot 10^{-5}$ and $Q^2\sim 1.5$ GeV$^2$ without paying the price of obtaining a worse agreement at larger values of $x$ and $Q^2$. For the gluon distribution the nonlinear effects are found to play an increasingly important role at $x\lsim 10^{-3}$ and $Q^2\lsim10$ GeV$^2$, but rapidly vanish at larger values of $x$ and $Q^2$. Consequently, contrary to CTEQ6L, the obtained gluon distribution at $Q^2=1.4$ GeV$^2$ shows a power-like growth at small $x$. Relative to the CTEQ6L gluons, an enhancement up to a factor $\sim6$ at $x=10^{-5}$, $Q_0^2=1.4$ GeV$^2$ reduces to a negligible difference at $Q^2\gsim 10$ GeV$^2$.

Probing Intrinsic Charm with Semileptonic B Decays

We discuss semileptonic B decays of the form B -> J/Psi e nu X as possible probes of intrinsic charm. We calculate the leading order perturbative contribution to the process B- -> J/Psi e- nu_e X and find it to be unobservably small, with a branching ratio ~ 10^-10. We propose a modified spectator model to estimate the intrinsic charm contribution and find that it can be significantly larger, with a branching ratio for B -> (c cbar) e- nu_e X as large as 5 X 10^-7. We show that the process could be observed at these levels by CDF assuming a Run II integrated luminosity of 15 fb^-1, making this a useful reaction to probe the idea of intrinsic charm.

Drell-Yan Massive Lepton-Pair's Angular Distributions at Large $Q_T$

By measuring Drell-Yan massive lepton-pair's angular distributions, we can identify the polarization of the virtual photon of invariant mass $Q$ which decays immediately into the lepton-pair. In terms of a modified QCD factorization formula for Drell-Yan process, which is valid even if $Q_T\gg Q$, we calculate the massive lepton-pair's angular distributions at large $Q_T$. We find that the virtual photons produced at high $Q_T$ are more likely to be transversely polarized. We discuss the implications of this finding to the J/$ψ$ mesons' polarization measured recently at Fermilab.

J/$ψ$ production and suppression in nuclear collisions

In terms of a new QCD factorization formula for J/$ψ$ production, we calculate the J/$ψ$ suppression in nuclear collisions by including the multiple scattering between the pre-J/$ψ$ partonic states and the nuclear medium. We find agreement with all data on J/$ψ$ suppression in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, except a couple of points (the ``second drop'') at the highest $E_T$ bins of the new NA50 data.

Single transverse-spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan lepton angular distribution

We calculate a single transverse-spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan lepton-pair's angular distribution in perturbative QCD. At leading order in the strong coupling constant, the asymmetry is expressed in terms of a twist-3 quark-gluon correlation function T_F^{(V)}(x_1,x_2). In our calculation, the same result was obtained in both light-cone and covariant gauge in QCD, while keeping explicit electromagnetic current conservation for the virtual photon that decays into the lepton pair. We also present a numerical estimate of the asymmetry and compare the result to an existing other prediction.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetries in Hadronic Pion Production

We analyze single transverse-spin asymmetries for hadronic pion production at large transverse momenta using QCD factorization. In the large $x_F$ region, leading contributions to the asymmetries are naturally produced by twist-3 parton correlation functions that couple quark fields and gluon field strengths. With a simple model for these matrix elements, leading-order asymmetries calculated from QCD are consistent with data on pion production from Fermilab, and can be used to predict single-spin asymmetries at RHIC. We argue that our perturbative calculation for the asymmetries is relevant to pion transverse momenta as low as a few GeV.

Nuclear Dependence in Direct Photon Production

We calculate the nuclear dependence of direct photon production in hadron-nucleus collisions. In terms of a multiple scattering picture, we factorize the cross section for direct photon production into calculable short-distance partonic parts times multiparton correlation functions in nuclei. We present the hadron-nucleus cross section as $A^α$ times the hadron-nucleon cross section. Using information on the multiparton correlation functions extracted from photon-nucleus experiments, we compute the value of $α$ as a function of transverse momentum of the direct photon. We also compare our results with recent data from Fermilab experiment E706.

Perturbative Gluon Shadowing in Heavy Nuclei

We study how much gluon shadowing can be perturbatively generated through the modified QCD evolution in heavy nuclei. The evolution of small-$x$ gluons is investigated within the semiclassical approximation. The method of characteristics is used to evaluate the shadowed distributions in low-$Q$ and small-$x$ region. In solving the modified evolution equation, we model in simultaneously fusions from independent constituents and from the same constituent, both in a proton and in a large loosely bound nucleus of $A\sim 200$. In addition to the actual distributions at small $x$, we study the ratios of the distributions at an initial scale $Q_0 = 2$ GeV, and show that a strong nuclear shadowing can follow from the modified QCD evolution.
