Unexpected type-II multiferroic phase in GdMnO3 under high magnetic fields

Perovskite manganites with small A-site ions, as the first and canonical branch of type-II multiferroics, are ideal systems to exhibit magnetism-induced ferroelectricity. Despite their established magnetoelectric phase diagrams under low magnetic fields, here an unidentified phase with a large magnetism-induced polarization (up to 1500 μC/m2) is revealed in GdMnO3 under high magnetic fields up to 60 T. Based on multiprobe experiments, a complete phase diagram is constructed with successive polar-nonpolar-polar-nonpolar transitions. Such a nonmonotonic evolution is well mimicked by model simulation, while the spin-lattice coupling is the key ingredient for the reentrant ferroelectric phase.

Fermi surface transformation at the pseudogap critical point of a cuprate superconductor

The nature of the pseudogap phase remains a major barrier to our understanding of cuprate high-temperature superconductivity. Whether or not this metallic phase is defined by any of the reported broken symmetries, the topology of its Fermi surface remains a fundamental open question. Here we use angle-dependent magnetoresistance (ADMR) to measure the Fermi surface of the cuprate Nd-LSCO. Above the critical doping $p^*$ -- outside of the pseudogap phase -- we fit the ADMR data and extract a Fermi surface geometry that is in quantitative agreement with angle-resolved photoemission. Below $p^*$ -- within the pseudogap phase -- the ADMR is qualitatively different, revealing a clear transformation of the Fermi surface. Changes in the quasiparticle lifetime across $p^*$ are ruled out as the cause of this transformation. Instead we find that our data are most consistent with a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by a $Q=(π, π)$ wavevector.

Lattice and magnetic dynamics in YVO$_{3}$ Mott insulator studied by neutron scattering and first-principles calculations

The Mott insulator YVO$_{3}$ with $T_{N}$ = 118 K is revisited to explore the role of spin, lattice and orbital correlations across the multiple structural and magnetic transitions observed as a function of temperature. Upon cooling, the crystal structure changes from orthorhombic to monoclinic at 200 K, and back to orthorhombic at 77 K, followed by magnetic transitions. From the paramagnetic high temperature phase, C-type ordering is first observed at 118 K, followed by a G-type spin re-orientation transition at 77 K. The dynamics of the transitions were investigated via inelastic neutron scattering and first principles calculations. An overall good agreement between the neutron data and calculated spectra was observed. From the magnon density of states, the magnetic exchange constants were deduced to be $J_{ab}$ = $J_{c}$ = -5.8 meV in the G-type spin phase, and $J_{ab}$ = -3.8 meV, $J_{c}$ = 7.6 meV at 80 K and $J_{ab}$ = -3.0 meV, $J_{c}$ = 6.0 meV at 100 K in the C-type spin phase. Paramagnetic scattering was observed in the spin ordered phases, well below the C-type transition temperature, that continuously increased above the transition. Fluctuations in the temperature dependence of the phonon density of states were observed between 50 and 80 K as well, coinciding with the G-type to C-type transition. These fluctuations are attributed to optical oxygen modes above 40 meV, from first principles calculations. In contrast, little change in the phonon spectra is observed across $T_{N}$.

Emergence of Competing Stripe Phase near the Mott Transition in Ti-doped Bilayer Calcium Ruthenates

We report the nanoscale imaging of Ti-doped bilayer calcium ruthenates during the Mott metal-insulator transition by microwave impedance microscopy. Different from a typical first-order phase transition where coexistence of the two terminal phases takes place, a new metallic stripe phase oriented along the in-plane crystalline axes emerges inside both the G-type antiferromagnetic insulating state and paramagnetic metallic state. The effect of this electronic state can be observed in macroscopic measurements, allowing us to construct a phase diagram that takes into account the energetically competing phases. Our work provides a model approach to correlate the macroscopic properties and mesoscopic phase separation in complex oxide materials.

Magnons and Phonons Optically Driven Out of Local Equilibrium in a Magnetic Insulator

Magnons are the energy quanta of fundamental spin excitations, namely spin waves, and they can make a considerable contribution to energy transport in some magnetic materials in a similar manner as lattice vibration waves or phonons. The coupling and possible non-equilibrium between magnons and other energy carriers have been used to explain several recently discovered thermally driven spin transport and energy conversion phenomena. Here, we report experiments in which local non-equilibrium between magnons and phonons in a single crystalline bulk magnetic insulator, Y3Fe5O12 (yttrium iron garnet, or YIG), has been created optically within a focused laser spot and probed directly with the use of micro-Brillouin light scattering (BLS). By analyzing the experimental results with a thermally induced magnon diffusion model, we obtain the magnon diffusion length of thermal magnons. By explicitly establishing non-equilibrium between magnons and phonons, our studies represent an important step toward a quantitative understanding of various spin-heat coupling phenomena.

Weak coupling of pseudoacoustic phonons and magnon dynamics in incommensurate spin ladder compound Sr14Cu24O41

Intriguing lattice dynamics has been predicted for aperiodic crystals that contain incommensurate substructures. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon and magnon dispersions in Sr14Cu24O41, which contains incommensurate one-dimensional (1D) chain and two-dimensional (2D) ladder substructures. Two distinct pseudoacoustic phonon modes, corresponding to the sliding motion of one sublattice against the other, are observed for atomic motions polarized along the incommensurate axis. In the long wavelength limit, it is found that the sliding mode shows a remarkably small energy gap of 1.7-1.9 meV, indicating very weak interactions between the two incommensurate sublattices. The measurements also reveal a gapped and steep linear magnon dispersion of the ladder sublattice. The high group velocity of this magnon branch and weak coupling with acoustic and pseudoacoustic phonons can explain the large magnon thermal conductivity in Sr14Cu24O41 crystals. In addition, the magnon specific heat is determined from the measured total specific heat and phonon density of states, and exhibits a Schottky anomaly due to gapped magnon modes of the spin chains. These findings offer new insights into the phonon and magnon dynamics and thermal transport properties of incommensurate magnetic crystals that contain low-dimensional substructures.
