Lu's conjecture for minimal surfaces

After Chern's conjecture on the discreteness of the constant scalar curvatures of compact minimal submanifolds $M^n$ in unit spheres $\mathbb{S}^{n+q}$, Z. Q. Lu proposed a conjecture regarding the second gap, based on his ingenious refinement of the known first gap theorem. This refinement unifies Simons' first gap theorem for hypersurfaces with the corresponding theorems for high-codimensional submanifolds established by Yau, Shen, Li and Li, among others. In this paper, for arbitrary codimension, we prove Lu's conjecture for minimal 2-spheres, and for any minimal surfaces under some slight inequality conditions about the normal scalar curvature.

Normal Scalar Curvature Inequality on a Class of Austere Submanifolds

In this paper, we establish new normal scalar curvature inequalities on a class of austere submanifolds by proving sharper DDVV-type inequalities on associated austere subspaces. We also provide some examples of austere submanifolds in this class and point out one of them achieves the equality in our normal scalar curvature inequality everywhere. As a byproduct, we obtain a Simons-type gap theorem for closed austere submanifolds in unit spheres which belong to that class.

Rigidity Results for Compact Submanifolds with Pinched Ricci Curvature in Euclidean and Spherical Space Forms

For compact submanifolds in Euclidean and Spherical space forms with Ricci curvature bounded below by a function $α(n,k,H,c)$ of mean curvature, we prove that the submanifold is either isometric to the Einstein Clifford torus, or a topological sphere for the maximal bound $α(n,[\frac{n}{2}],H,c)$, or has up to $k$-th homology groups vanishing. This gives an almost complete (except for the differentiable sphere theorem) characterization of compact submanifolds with pinched Ricci curvature, generalizing celebrated rigidity results obtained by Ejiri, Xu-Tian, Xu-Gu, Xu-Leng-Gu, Vlachos, Dajczer-Vlachos.

Cohomology vanishing theorems for free boundary submanifolds

In this paper, via a new Hardy type inequality, we establish some cohomology vanishing theorems for free boundary compact submanifolds $M^n$ with $n\geq2$ immersed in the Euclidean unit ball $\mathbb{B}^{n+k}$ under one of the pinching conditions $|Φ|^2\leq C$, $|A|^2\leq \widetilde{C}$, or $|Φ|\leq R(p,|H|)$, where $A$ $(Φ)$ is the (traceless) second fundamental form, $H$ is the mean curvature, $C,\widetilde{C}$ are positive constants and $R(p,|H|)$ is a positive function. In particular, we remove the condition on the flatness of the normal bundle, solving the first question, and partially answer the second question on optimal pinching constants proposed by Cavalcante, Mendes and Vitório.

On a Conjecture of Bahri-Xu

In order to study the Yamabe changing-sign problem, Bahri and Xu proposed a conjecture which is a universal inequality for $p$ points in $\mathbb R^m$. They have verified the conjecture for $p\leq3$. In this paper, we first simplify this conjecture by giving two sufficient and necessary conditions inductively. Then we prove the conjecture for the basic case $m=1$ with arbitrary $p$. In addition, for the cases when $p=4,5$ and $m\geq2$, we manage to reduce them to the basic case $m=1$ and thus prove them as well.

On some conjectures by Lu and Wenzel

In order to give a unified generalization of the BW inequality and the DDVV inequality, Lu and Wenzel proposed three Conjectures 1, 2, 3 and an open Question 1 in 2016. In this paper we discuss further these conjectures and put forward several new conjectures which will be shown equivalent to Conjecture 2. In particular, we prove Conjecture 2 and hence all conjectures in some special cases. For Conjecture 3, we obtain a bigger upper bound $2+\sqrt{10}/2$, and we also give a weaker answer for the more general Question 1. In addition, we obtain some new simple proofs of the complex BW inequality and the condition for equality.

Differentiable classification of 4-manifolds with singular Riemannian foliations

In this paper, we first prove that any closed simply connected 4-manifold that admits a decomposition into two disk bundles of rank greater than 1 is diffeomorphic to one of the standard elliptic 4-manifolds: $\mathbb{S}^4$, $\mathbb{CP}^2$, $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^2$, or $\mathbb{CP}^2\#\pm \mathbb{CP}^2$. As an application we prove that any closed simply connected 4-manifold admitting a nontrivial singular Riemannian foliation is diffeomorphic to a connected sum of copies of standard $\mathbb{S}^4$, $\pm\mathbb{CP}^2$ and $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^2$. A classification of singular Riemannian foliations of codimension 1 on all closed simply connected 4-manifolds is obtained as a byproduct. In particular, there are exactly 3 non-homogeneous singular Riemannian foliations of codimension 1, complementing the list of cohomogeneity one 4-manifolds.

Isoparametric foliations, diffeomorphism groups and exotic smooth structures

In this paper, we are concerned with interactions between isoparametric theory and differential topology. Two foliations are called equivalent if there exists a diffeomorphism between the foliated manifolds mapping leaves to leaves. Using differential topology, we obtain several results towards the classification problem of isoparametric foliations up to equivalence. In particular, we show that each homotopy $n$-sphere has the "same" isoparametric foliations as the standard sphere $S^n$ has except for $n=4$, reducing the classification problem on homotopy spheres to that on the standard sphere. Moreover, we prove the uniqueness up to equivalence of isoparametric foliations with two points as the focal submanifolds on each sphere $S^n$ except for $n=5$. Besides, we show that the uniqueness holds on $S^5$ if and only if $π_0(Diff(S^4))\simeq\mathbb{Z}_2$, i.e., pseudo-isotopy implies isotopy for diffeomorphisms on $S^4$. At last, some ideas behind the proofs enable us to discover new exotic smooth structures on certain manifolds.

A note on Ribaucour transformations in Lie sphere geometry

Following Burstall and Hertrich-Jeromin we study the Ribaucour transformation of Legendre submanifolds in Lie sphere geometry. We give an explicit parametrization of the resulted Legendre submanifold $\hat{F}$ of a Ribaucour transformation, via a single real function $τ$ which represents the regular Ribaucour sphere congruence $s$ enveloped by the original Legendre submanifold $F$.

DDVV-type inequality for skew-symmetric matrices and Simons-type inequality for Riemannian submersions

In this paper, we will first derive a DDVV-type optimal inequality for real skew-symmetric matrices, then we apply it to establish a Simons-type integral inequality for Riemannian submersions with totally geodesic fibres and Yang-Mills horizontal distributions. In this way, we show phenomenons of duality between Submanifold geometry and Riemannnian submersion, particularly between second fundamental form of a submanifold and integrability tensor of a Riemannian submersion.

Geometry of isoparametric hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds

In a previous work, we studied isoparametric functions on Riemannian manifolds, especially on exotic spheres. One result there says that, in the family of isoparametric hypersurfaces of a closed Riemannian manifold, there exist at least one minimal isoparametric hypersurface. In this note, we show such minimal isoparametric hypersurface is also unique in the family if the ambient manifold has positive Ricci curvature. Moreover, we give a proof of the Theorem D claimed by Q.M.Wang (without proof) which asserts that the focal submanifolds of an isoparametric function on a complete Riemannian manifold are minimal. Further, we study isoparametric hypersurfaces with constant principal curvatures in general Riemannian manifolds. It turns out that in this case the focal submanifolds have the same properties as those in standard sphere, i.e., the shape operator with respect to any normal direction has common constant principal curvatures. Some necessary conditions involving Ricci curvature and scalar curvature are also derived.

Isoparametric functions and exotic spheres

The first part of the paper is to improve the fundamental theory of isoparametric functions on general Riemannian manifolds. Next we focus our attention on exotic spheres, especially on "exotic" 4-spheres (if exist) and the Gromoll-Meyer sphere. In particular, as one of main results we prove: there exists no properly transnormal function on any exotic 4-sphere if it exists. Furthermore, by projecting an $S^3$-invariant isoparametric function on $Sp(2)$, we construct a properly transnormal but not an isoparametric function on the Gromoll-Meyer sphere with two points as the focal varieties.

Variational formulas of higher order mean curvatures

In this paper, we establish the first variational formula and its Euler-Lagrange equation for the total $2p$-th mean curvature functional $\mathcal {M}_{2p}$ of a submanifold $M^n$ in a general Riemannian manifold $N^{n+m}$ for $p=0,1,...,[\frac{n}{2}]$. As an example, we prove that closed complex submanifolds in complex projective spaces are critical points of the functional $\mathcal {M}_{2p}$, called relatively $2p$-minimal submanifolds, for all $p$. At last, we discuss the relations between relatively $2p$-minimal submanifolds and austere submanifolds in real space forms, as well as a special variational problem.

On submanifolds whose tubular hypersurfaces have constant mean curvatures

Motivated by the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces, we study submanifolds whose tubular hypersurfaces have some constant "higher order mean curvatures". Here a $k$-th order mean curvature $Q_k$ ($k\geq1$) of a hypersurface $M^n$ is defined as the $k$-th power sum of the principal curvatures, or equivalently, of the shape operator. Many necessary restrictions involving principal curvatures, higher order mean curvatures and Jacobi operators on such submanifolds are obtained, which, among other things, generalize some classical results in the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces given by E. Cartan, K. Nomizu, H. F. M{ü}nzner, Q. M. Wang, \emph{etc.}. As an application, we finally get a geometrical filtration for the focal varieties of isoparametric functions on a complete Riemannian manifold.

Anisotropic isoparametric hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces

In this note, we give a classification of complete anisotropic isoparametric hypersurfaces, i.e., hypersurfaces with constant anisotropic principal curvatures, in Euclidean spaces, which is in analogue with the classical case for isoparametric hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces. On the other hand, by an example of local anisotropic isoparametric surface constructed by B. Palmer, we find that anisotropic isoparametric hypersurfaces have both local and global aspects as in the theory of proper Dupin hypersurfaces.

Gradient map of isoparametric polynomial and its application to Ginzburg-Landau system

In this note, we study properties of the gradient map of the isoparametric polynomial. For a given isoparametric hypersurface in sphere, we calculate explicitly the gradient map of its isoparametric polynomial which turns out many interesting phenomenons and applications. We find that it should map not only the focal submanifolds to focal submanifolds, isoparametric hypersurfaces to isoparametric hypersurfaces, but also map isoparametric hypersurfaces to focal submanifolds. In particular, it turns out to be a homogeneous polynomial automorphism on certain isoparametric hypersurface. As an immediate consequence, we get the Brouwer degree of the gradient map which was firstly obtained by Peng and Tang with moving frame method. Following Farina's construction, another immediate consequence is a counter example of the Brézis question about the symmetry for the Ginzburg-Landau system in dimension 6, which gives a partial answer toward the Open problem 2 raised by Farina.
