Emergence of Gaussianity in the thermodynamic limit of interacting fermions

Systems of interacting fermions can give rise to ground states whose correlations become effectively free-fermion-like in the thermodynamic limit, as shown by Baxter for a class of integrable models that include the one-dimensional XYZ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain. Here, we quantitatively analyse this behaviour by establishing the relation between system size and correlation length required for the fermionic Gaussianity to emerge. Importantly, we demonstrate that this behaviour can be observed through the applicability of Wick's theorem and thus it is experimentally accessible. To establish the relevance of our results to possible experimental realisations of XYZ-related models, we demonstrate that the emergent Gaussianity is insensitive to weak variations in the range of interactions, coupling inhomogeneities and local random potentials.

Winding number order in the Haldane model with interactions

We study the Haldane model with nearest-neighbor interactions. This model is physically motivated by the associated ultracold atoms implementation. We show that the topological phase of the interacting model can be characterized by a physically observable winding number. The robustness of this number extends well beyond the topological insulator phase towards attractive and repulsive interactions that are comparable to the kinetic energy scale of the model. We identify and characterize the relevant phases of the model.

Geometrical phases for the G(4,2) Grassmannian manifold

We generalize the usual abelian Berry phase generated for example in a system with two non-degenerate states to the case of a system with two doubly degenerate energy eigenspaces. The parametric manifold describing the space of states of the first case is formally given by the G(2,1) Grassmannian manifold, while for the generalized system it is given by the G(4,2) one. For the latter manifold which exhibits a much richer structure than its abelian counterpart we calculate the connection components, the field strength and the associated geometrical phases that evolve non-trivially both of the degenerate eigenspaces. A simple atomic model is proposed for their physical implementation.

Interference of spontaneously emitted photons

We discuss an experimental setup where two laser-driven atoms spontaneously emit photons and every photon causes a ``click'' at a point on a screen. By deriving the probability density for an emission into a certain direction from basic quantum mechanical principles we predict a spatial interference pattern. Similarities and differences with the classical double-slit experiment are discussed.
